Yeah, Cal. Great shot; and great shot. And, are you going to post it on the darkside?
Those shots are really impressive on snow cover, which we desert hunters see, occasionally. It's amazing to see just how far that blood can splatter!
I have a snapshot somewhere of a coyote hit at fairly close range with #4buck, and most of his gooey innerds are hanging on a bush behind him. (I don't think I'll share that one)
Good hunting. LB

There is no question that you had enough gun!
What caliber was you using?..Whats enough and not enough?
I once shot a ground hog lying on a big rock. The ground hog was facing toward me,about 60 yards away.I was using a custom 25.06 that i built.Anyhow, when i shot the ground hog, there was nothing but an empty fur lying on the rock..To this day i am still puzzeld,to how that happened?.All the insides of the ground hog were scatterd all about, not one peice bigger than a quarter, could i find.

I really don’t think that is “splatter” My guess is he was shot on the rock. Looks like he did a little flopping around up there before he expired and slid off the face of it. How close am I Cal? If he was shot where he lay and that is splatter all the way up there then I would put that rifle away for fur season. LOL
Good hunting.

Q wins a balloon! That coyote was standing at the bottom of that rock when I shot her. She tried to run up the rock, died and slid back down it. That was one of three I shot right there. Three old ones and took a den. I had been kind of busy shooting and happened to glass back to the first one I shot and seen the blood covered mess, and being the kind of guy that I am, I thought I needed a picture. I know it's wrong. I had actually e-mailed that picture to a few friends, and thought it too gory for the net, but then its been hot and I have been bored, so I figured I'd let you pampass bastards in on it.

Looks like the coyote ran up the rock on the left side of the den hole and then slid off the right side?
By the amount of blood shown,i would guess it was shot with a 243 Ok,i know you got one,Cal.

Yes a .243 But no on the den hole. The pups were about 300 yds down the draw in some sink holes. ![-](http://photos.imageevent.com/caltaylor/morehunting/websize/coyote%20001.jpg)
The sinks were right behind me in the draw. This is full denning outfit. Turkey vest, to carry smoke bombs etc., Shotgun in case of escapees, shovel to plug holes with dirt after inserting lit smoke bombs. ![-](http://photos.imageevent.com/caltaylor/morehunting/websize/coyote%20006.jpg) [ July 21, 2005, 10:14 AM: Message edited by: Cal Taylor ]

Lung hit for sure but it could have taken out a little of the liver as well. Angling shot maybe? The bloodiest ones I get are Lung/liver shots. Usually when I pull a shot a little far back and catch the back of the lungs and the liver. They really spring a leak when you do that.
I shot a coyote one time that pulled up to a stop about 2ft from a rock wall. The exit hole was only about the size of a quarter but it left a misty blood ring on the cliff face about 16 inches round. After seeing shots like that it always refreshes your respect for fire-arms.
BTW Cal. You didn’t take the time to cut the coyotes open did you? I would hate to see your competition getting ahead of you. LOL
Good hunting.

That shot was through the middle of the heart lungs broadside. I cut most all of them open Quinton. Thats how I get my pup counts. She had had 9 pups. That picture was the bitch. My employers want to know that kind of stuff. And I usually check and see what they had been eating. This bunch was full of antelope fawns, but were withing a mile or so of 5000 head of sheep, but there hadn't been any killing going on (yet). I took another den and 2 old ones the same day within 2 miles of these. I don't have any competition on these damage deals, so I have plenty of time to investigate all I want. I have hunted with alot of true professional ADC guys (not the amatuer wannabes) and they take the time to figure out what is really going on in the lives of these coyotes. And they can figure out in problem situations which bunch is causing the problems, they can track and figure where they are coming from, where they are watering, and where they live, and then go in and kill them. That, with the den contents (scraps) and stomach contents assures them that usually they had the right bunch. But there is alot of work that is just for potential problems also. But those type guys are who I have tried to learn from and put their knowledge into effect. [ July 21, 2005, 02:27 PM: Message edited by: Cal Taylor ]

Sorry Cal. I just thought I read one time that by the time you “experts” got done examining the coyote and what it had been eating the real pros would be ahead of the curve by killing one more coyote. Maybe that just works on “Calve” killers? Don’t figure a guy like you would get much work from them calve “farmers” by wasting all that time cutting up them smelly old coyotes. LMAO
OH BOY! It is getting HOT!!!
Good hunting.

Rich and Jay hell! Tell everyone just how long you had the twins before you traded them to Byron for that milkgoat.

From the picture you wouldn't have to examine the stomach contents of Calvin to determine that there has been a few beers consumed. Probably while trying to beat the heat.

Rob, I don't really know Robbie Campbell, but I know of him and know several others that do know him. I was actually hired by Natrona county the first time as his replacement. He had gotten crossways with some of the predator board members and got fired (this is the story I got anyway). Later on they ran out of money to keep two guys on full time and I have just worked summer time denning since then. But on another note Robbie had some good Dorn dogs, and a friend of mine at Kaycee had ended up with a couple of them, and I managed to get a couple of pups from them and I started them this summer and they are both real good for year old pups. I killed four coyotes this morning with one of my old dogs and one of those pups. I think Robbie is still around Casper. [ July 22, 2005, 01:32 PM: Message edited by: Cal Taylor ]

Nice work Cal, Is that "guage" in the picture. That is one hell of a dog!. Sounds like you're keeping busy. Did Cabelas pick up the video finally, i haven't seen it yet at our Cabelas. but i can't wait i might just have to order it from All Predator Calls I need to give you a call and talk to you about the guy i sold my furs to down your way that you said you knew........Its a bad deal.
That quote should be etched in stone somewhere that is one of the many valuable lessons that Cal taught me when i was fortunate enough to hunt with him.
