Finally got some things done this weekend!! [Cool]

I had paid for a CZ 527 American in 204 Ruger the first week of September. I finally got a chance to get it Friday morning and got it sighted in and broke in a bit that afternoon. Very nice little rifle. Topped it with a Simmons ATech, 2.8-10. I like this little rig alot.

Although, I hope my first shot at a coyote with it isnt a sign of things to come. [Big Grin]

Saturday morning, I got a chance to make a couple of quick stands, first of the year, before going to my wifes sisters wedding (2nd). I made the mistake of not taking my stool along to sit on and the grass and weeds are still so high, I couldnt set the way I wanted, instead having to take what I could get to give the best views.

First stand, nothing. However, when I got back to the truck, there was a coyote in the field. From the way it was going, it could very well have been on the way in, or had been there and I didnt see it due to the high weeds and was leaving. Anyhow, I misjudged the distance and promptly shot right over the damned things back. [Roll Eyes] [Smile] I lazered it after the shot and I was only off 50 yards..... [Big Grin]

Second stand, about 15 minutes into the JS Jackrabbit Blues, I heard something in the leaves behind me. I turned the call way down and a few minutes later a nice bobcat walked out about 10 yards away. Not a big cat, but not a kitten either. It was tempting, but season doesnt open on bobcat and fox until Nov 20. It offered plenty of good shots. Wish I had a camera, for the umpteenth time in my life.

Anyway, finally got my rifle and got to do some calling. It was all good. Score or no. Successful weekend to me.

[Smile]

Andy, just how far off was that field Coyote? Must have been a ways with holding over with a .204 trajectory. Am I messed up with my .17 Rem good to kill to 230 and 4.5" low at 300? [Confused] What am I missing? [Confused] Loren.

Loren, I wasnt holding over. I misjudged it and had a brain fart to boot....

Like I said, I just got the gun the day before and put very few rounds through it. Enough I figgered I could kill a called coyote easy enough. Not expecting any long range stuff.

Anyway, I thought the coyote was about 250. I wasnt thinking and held just under his backbone. Well, from what the tables say, I should be dead on at 250, the brain fart, and I misjudged the distance, lazered at just over 200. And, to boot, it was a bit downhill.

With it being almost 2in high at 200, by the tables, and a bit downhill, I came to the conclusion by where I held, I most likely shot right over his back. Maybe even parted some hair.

Just an all around screw up by me. Oh well, aint the first or last, Im sure.

Hope that helps you....

Andy

PS, Im most likely going to change the zero next time at the range. I dont know why I need a calling rifle sighted for 250. Another brain fart.

Had I put the crosshairs in the breadbasket and not analyzed anything, I would have a fur in the freezer.....

Whew. I went back and ran PointBlank again and came up with the same as before so I'm glad I misread your story. I'm at an inch and a half (high or low) to 255 so that's where I'm going to learn to shoot it. Blown myself out of the water so many times thinking hold high I'm mad at myself for it. No more. Thanks for the comeback.
