It could be an otter or a mink? It depends on the size hard to tell. I would say it is a mink by the shape providing they are in the area.

I did trap them years ago but go more for calling & shooting coyotes

Well, in my defense, the perspective is a little misleading? The animal looked to be a lot bigger than a mink, in both pics? Next time, do like the new guy and lay a quarter next to the foot! LB

Doesn't look like anything but a mink. Tails too short for an otter, and an otter's tail kinda tapers off the hindquarters. Giveaway fro me, aside from the size of it compared to that grass, was the throat patch, the structure of tha tail, and the "corners" atop the head where a mink's ears are. But, then again, I am a pampass knowitall.
I can tell you one thing about mink. Actually, I can tell you a couple things about mink, but the one this picture reminds me of involves a pic in my mind not unlike that one of Tim's. I was out calling varmints on a cold day with my trusty Savage Hornet when I was about 14. A mink went running down the opposite side of a pond. Hit her square, I did. Poof!!! No mink. What a waste. ![[Frown]](frown.gif) Havent' shot once with a centerfire ever since, so I must have learned my lesson.

Cdog, that would be a pampass knowatail.....
If you took the top pic and cropped it to get rid of the grass to eliminate any sense of scale you could easily believe that it was an otter with its' tail curled. That is one fat bodied mink, at least compared to how we grow 'em.
Second pic screams mink (or weasel).
Otter story....
Somewhere around 1983 I was driving in IL., traveling parallel to the Mississippi during a very heavy downpour. Some critter dashed out in front of me and died. Though there were no otters in the area at the time I had a reasonable idea of what I'd ran over. I turned around and verified that I had indeed ran over an otter. I called the IL. Conservation POLICE (cocky bastards) the next day and got complete run-around and eventual denial of any knowledge.
I then called the Mo. Conservation Dept. ( read as decent professionals). I called a number and was referred to another number or three. I finally was connected with a very disappointed (though still highly professional state employee serving the public) biologist who ran the otter restocking program for the state of Missouri. His disappointment stemmed from the fact that he had personally turned that otter loose only a matter of hours prior to its' death......on the other side of the river. I was thanked profusely for the contribution of data to their program, though I thought the guy was going to cut loose with a big old sob at any second. I felt sorry for him.
Just one of those things that sticks with a guy. Otters in the tributaries of the Mississippi in the state of Missouri are now one of the greatest nuisances known to man.

JoeF; I don't know squat about otters. What's the deal here?? The otters run out of carp to eat & are now going after bluegills??
Can otters be called or is the only way to harvest them by trapping them in beaver sets??

It was the small patch of cattails, just beyond the mink, that gave it scale in my eye.
Kokopelli,
Otters are predators. And I remember reading of someone calling one on a stand, quite a ways from the water.
Even if you could call one, it's not legal (here) to "hunt" them (or beaver) without a nuisance wildlife permit.
There are some trappers (in this state) that are having fairly good success, specifically targeting otters, with cage traps.
