Are you the photographer???? Why would they not know anything about a collered wolf? Seriously, I am always skeptical about this stuff.

I changed the link to one that gives me photo credit. These collars aren't GPS collars Cross J. They are short range and run on a certain frequency just for locating them at shorter range. (A few miles). Some of them are GPS collared, but probably not this one.

Something's wrong with them not having the data on the collared wolf. They typically collect data when they collar one. Time to fire some collar guys if they missed data collection.

Cal, I'm betting anything killed anywhere around you is going to be wolf related, your phone is going to be busy.

True, but I'm betting that this individual has been a long ways from a receiver for some time, and if it isn't GPS'd, then someone would have to get within the transmitter's range to pick up its signal and positively identify the individual. I'm sure there is plenty of data on that wolf, but until they identify it specifically, they won't know which wolf it is. I'm really surprised that they don't want to try and capture that signal for the data it would provide to them. When I was radio tracking golden eagles, finding them was often a challenge, but we certainly wanted to know their whereabouts as often as possible.
Was that a bit of a shock to have him pop up? Were you calling and working an area or did you just happen upon him (her)? BTW, beautiful picture. He kinda stands out standing out there.

Good point on the data acquisition. When they do get this wolf hopefully they'll make the data available. Nice looking wolf, too bad you couldn't shoot the thing.

That is a lot like my lone encounter up north, a few days before Christmas. He/it was coal black, facing the same way, with a foot of snow in the ground. The big difference was that my wolf was at least 600 yards away.
Both trips left me with something to chew on, about wolf encounters. Couda woulda shoulda.

Great photo, Cal! did you come across the wolf by happenstance? (hope that isn't too prying of me to ask) [ April 21, 2011, 12:28 PM: Message edited by: knockemdown ]
