Just as I was sitting down to watch a video last night around 8:00pm I got a call from a friend of mine. He said he'd stuck a big bear with his bow and needed help finding it, skinning it, and packing it out. Well we got'r done, but I didn't get to bed until 2:00 am this morning. Darn bear died on a super steep slope in the nastiest hawthorn bushes and wild roses on the planet. It was literally a Hell hole. I feel like a pin cushion this morning because of how many times I got stuck by 2 to 3 inch thorns. My hands/fingers are full of micro sized thorns from the rose bushes. I HATE thorn bushes!!! His pack was a 2500 cubic inch pack. Unfortunately the bear is 3500 cubic inches or so. Anyway we couldn't get the hide in the pack. We ended up dragging it out until I had to cross Belt Creek. I then just put it over my shoulders, crossed the creek, and walked the last 1/4 mile to the truck with it over my shoulders. The hide/head had to weigh somewhere between 80 to 100 lbs. Yup, I'm whupped, but it was a good time. Here's a few photos.
Me with my pard's bear.
This is the best photo of the bunch because the truck is only a about 50 feet away. I was beginning to wonder if I would ever reach it.
Here's my pard the happy hunter. This is a real decent bear and considering it was all spot and stalk (during rifle season for bear no less), I'm impressed. [ September 16, 2011, 10:22 AM: Message edited by: ursus21 ]

I'm not sure what my friend would have done. He had never killed a bear before. I talked him into getting it out last night instead of waiting until this morning. I can only imagine what a nightmare it would have been trying to skin that bear once it stiffened up. Might have been nearly impossible.

A friend in need is a friend indeed, and you are surely a good friend, Ursus. I'm sure your buddy appreciates you. Kudos to him on a dandy bow kill! Double kudos to you for helping him.

Great story, Troy!
Was reading a story this morning about two guys hunting on the Montana/Idaho border that popped a griz thinking it was a black. When they went in to try and sort it out, the wounded griz turned one of the two hunters into bear poop before succumbing.
Have you heard about that yet?

Boog, yes I read about that as well. What is it they say it Hunter's Safety classes "Know your target and beyond." Seems that simple rule would have avoided a lot of grief in this situation.

Hoping to get a tape measure on the skull by next week. I'm thinking my pard not only got his first bear, but it will be real close to a P+Y bear. While I absolutely enjoy hunting bears over bait, there is something just a little extra special about getting a bear one-on-one spot and stalk.
