The post on the Night Hunting Forum brought up the topic of good partners and how they're hard to come by.

A number of the members of this Forum have participated in calling contests, so what do you look for in an ideal partner?

I've called with a number of different guys and the best have all had a few things in common.

Maybe most importantly, they're a good shot. When they shoot, something dies. I have confidence in them. They cover their area on the stand and I cover mine, I don't have to look over where he is because he's got it covered. Also, the best partners seem to have the same competitive nature I do and we both push each other to get in more stands, hunter harder and smarter, and kill more coyotes.

Someone whos farts don't stink as bad as your own do. That is critical.

In my book a good partner is one that has lots of good places to go with all kinds of animals that come in fast and stupid and just stand there for me to shoot. Also helps if he has good calls and knows how to make the right sounds on them, good truck to get around in and a gas card with no bottom to it. And then it helps if we can get along with each other. I'll try real hard if he has all that!

Dang I think I just let it out of the bag what kind of partner Iam!!! (Delect,Delect,Delect)

I'll tell you this. In my opinion, it is just as difficult to find a lifelong mate as it is to find a partner with all the qualifications and desire, who won't let you down, and helps with the preparation, the work and the money. You need to be on the same wavelength, and you can't second guess what he does. He needs to be an excellent shot on game, an intuitive hunter, and a pleasure to be with. Those people are hard to find.

Good hunting. LB

Must have an extreme will to win, lots of money, must be honest and willing to work as a team. Must know: alot about hunting predators day and night, best times to hunt, best areas to hunt, lighting, shooting, etc. Knowing all the ins and outs of the game. Willing to drive as far as it takes to win, even if it's more than 1000 miles. Willing to stay up all day and night without sleep or food, two days and two nights if it's a weekend hunt. Being able to hunt as a machine together, no words, just call em, see em and shoot em. Put em in the truck and move on to the next one. I'm sure I missed something, but that would be a good hunting partner. lol

Ol' Tim had a good suggestion. Something about dogs? Dunno, maybe he was stirring it up? [Smile]

Someone who sits still, dont stink, can be quiet, can go on a hunt at the drop of a dime, Knows where the coyotes are, and doesn't go hunting with other people in your hunting spots.

crapshoot, that's a good one. I don't know how many times I told someone not to tell anyone about this place. You can bet money they are going back there and hunt it without you. If it's not your land you can't keep them off, they have every right in the world to hunt there, Good Hunting.

I have yet to see where a new guy will respect my hunting areas. Therefore, it cuts both ways. he can go anywhere I take him, no strings attached.

However, am I going to take him to a better than average area? Not likely.

Will he get the instant gratification that new people seem to need? Not unless all the stars are in alignment.

I take them where they stand a good chance of scoring. That's actually a pretty good deal.

Good hunting. LB

A perfect calling partner -----
Sits still as a statue, can use a howler as well as any mouth blown call , knows where to sit without me telling him ,helps with gas , and skinning . can decide amongst both of us where to make a stand , and doesnt miss a shot that is possible. Has eyes that can always spot a incoming predator, and can go all day without food . No whining !!!!!

heck yeah Ill take my wife callin, when she learns how to skin a coyote.

If my calling partner looked like Angelina Jolie I wouldn't care if she could shoot, blow a call or sit still. It's all relative.

There you go, Jay. Rich offers a clue, what you do with it is up to you. Walk the walk, talk the talk.

Good hunting, LB

(BTW, are those lips real?)

PS "shoot, blow a call or sit still".....Rich says you can't do none of that, either.

If my calling partner looked like Angelina Jolie I would pay particularly close attention to how she held and blew the call to achieve the best results.

So your saying that there's more to it than a howl is a howl is a howl?
