Who besides me is guilty of getting so immersed in tooting a call that you close your eyes in doing so? Most of the time I can keep them scanning the country but every once in a while I catch myself blind to my bliss.

I don't know about that, but I have caught myself mesmerized by something, and stared idly, for too long, instead of scanning like I should. Fatigue causes it.
At night, it doesn't matter if you close your eyes....if you are on the gun, while your partner is working the light.
Good hunting. LB

Many times I've been calling away looking around (or at least going through the motions) only to see a coyote, locked up, looking at me, very close and sometimes quartering away.
I always wonder what I was thinking the moment before I saw that coyote. I can never remember.
I've caught myself being watched calling too many times. I've shot a few of the run aways, but far too many got away.
I agree with fatigue, and it doesn't seem to take long.

Well, I have not consciously noticed my eyes closing while calling, that is if you are asking if I close my eyes “feeling the music” like you might see a concert pianist do. However, I am guilty of taking a nap after getting too comfortable when I sat down. I did it once when I was hunting by myself and was surprised when I got back to the truck and discovered I had been gone for two hours. LOL I’m kinda glad I didn’t have a FoxPro or something out there making noise the whole time. Something might have eaten me. LOL

"sleep" Went out one time with a fella named Bill Scott. We had just started in what became my favorite area(due to calling this day) and I made a terrible choice on setup on top of a knob. We settled in, Bill to my back left facing my 10:00. After the second melody I heard a herd of horses coming full run. Swung my head just in time to see Coyote 1 come blasting by 5 feet behind me, missed Bill by a fleas whisker and kept on. Of course since this was the first takers all weekend I got all blown out of proportion and jumped up for the hail mary. Second mistake. Just as I saw C1's tail crest the hill Coyote 2 makes like an horse too. I swing around in time for the barrel to head south as he's passing under it going north. 8 feet off Bill's toes. He's gone too. huh. I gather my wits enough to realize Bill's still sitting there, "scanning". Didn't even know what happened with his eyes shut. All in 6-8 minutes since we sat down. Somday I'll embarrass myself with the "eyes wide shut" story.
