The smoke bombs I use are poisonous. You need to be licensed to get them. They kill very quickly. I don't dig them back out, but I occasionally use stiff wire and a big treble hook (or barbed wire) to wire out the dead ones if I think I need to see or count them for some reason, or if I think one of my old ones was in the hole and I need to be sure or if I'm not absolutely positive I had the right hole. Usually if I have previously shot the female, I open her and count scars to see how many pups.
