Hey Me and my buddy are just starten coyote hunting. He has an electronic caller and I just got some handheld calls. Were plannen on going out saturday. Anyone got any pointers for us. Thanks.

Welcome to the New Huntmasters, howa1500. (I have one of those) Glad to have you on board.
As far as pointers, do a little reading here, as well as other boards, if you like, and get a feel for the critters you will be dealing with. Have confidence, it really helps to KNOW that you are going to call an animal, and that you are going to kill it.

Once you turn off the truck, don't make a sound. No slamming doors or talking to your buddy. Sit next to a bush or tree to help break up your outline. Set the call about 25 yards away, next to a bush with the volume just barely louder than a real rabbit can scream. Set up in a place where you can see at least 100 yards in the direction you expect a coyote to come from.
Start the tape and hold still until it runs out, or you have to raise the rifle to shoot. Be sure to watch fence rows and tree lines for incoming coyotes as well.
Coyotes like to hang near cattle, but the cattle will interrupt your stand. Setting up about a half a mile from the cattle can be very productive.

Welcome Howa1500... You are just a little to the south of me. Rabbit distress sounds are calling in the fox but very few coyotes are responding to them right now... they have other things on their mind. Focus more on the coyote vocalization sounds and be willing to set a little longer at each set up. Like I said, they have other things on their mind. In this deep snow we have right now, utilize the deer trails, why not, the coyotes are ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

When I started out I had little respect for how smart and sneaky a coyote could be. I would make my stand with the truck in full view. I would walk the ridgelines, like I would if I were on a deer drive. I was more concerned about seeing a bumped coyote, than concentrating on sneaking in on him and not bumping him in the first place.
There are some things not to do. For what it is worth.

Whatever you do, don't start buyin stuff because Predator Extreme magazine has a cool picture of a couple dead coyotes and the hunter used X to get them. Been there done that. I've got a room full of crap that never see's the light of day. Get out and have some fun, and make sure you let us know all about your first one.

Well actually I already shot one a couple of years back with the flintlock. I was standing on a watch for a deer drive and one came right up to me, the only one I've seen since. But Id like to actually call one in and shoot it.
