Well the big part of the story is already out, I got myself, as Ed Wimberley says, "another'n". [Smile]

Here's how.

My coyote is done (at the taxidermist) and we wanted to get in one last hunt, but the Mrs. over at the Ranch had the flu (and we didn't want it), so it looked like our trip was going to fall through.

Then, on a local (general hunting) board I frequent, an outfitter posted he was looking for someone to hunt coyotes.
I was a few hours behind the post, so I figured he'd had plenty of takers already... and he did, but nobody that was willing to make a firm commitment.
Luckily I had already set aside the time, had the dough, and the desire... so I was able to be there when he needed me.

After being lost a bit, and having the outfitter spot me from the up on the hill and drive down to lead me in, I was on the property.
Joe left, and I did a quick scout around the fence line, calling a stand on my way up, then sat quietly in the rocks above and watched the deer kill the coyotes had been game-cammed scattering, for an hour or so on my way back down.

The following morning Red and I headed back up to "the one good stand" I liked, a big bowl at the head of a long steep brushy draw, surrounded by CRP (mostly deep grass/buckwheat straw and nap weed (sic?)), at the edge of the pine forest that spills into the canyons below.

I set up at the very top against a large jack pine, taking the downwind spot and covering the CRP, at the tip of a finger of trees that stuck out into the field.
Red laid in the grass at the edge of the bowl, back to my left, watching over the bottom of the bowl and the slope leading up through the trees on the other side.

With Mr Cronk calling quietly from my e-caller, and some hand calling to supplement that, and to cut through the wind, the game was on.

Ten of twelve minutes in, I notice a coyote coming, way to my right, and straight across the wind, in the deep grass.
"Oh crap!" I think to myself, she's gonna wind me before I can get a shot... SPROING! She jumps on a mouse, but doesn't catch it, and freezes up.

I've "ranged" her in my scope, and she appears to be a long ways out, maybe 300 yards, with 60 or more yards of grass in the bullet's path... SPROING!!! She pounces again, missing the mouse, again, and then starts moving.
The whole time the e-caller is wailing, I'm calling, and squeaking, and cussing under my breath.

She checks up again, cocks herself, and I start to consider shooting her at the apex of her pounce, but at such a long distance I'm concerned about the timing.
All I can see clearly, is her head... SPROING! She's not a good mouser, still nothin'.

I ki-yi, then chirp, on a high pitched closed reed call, and she just looks at me and goes back to walking straight across the wind, just like she has been the whole time pretty much disinterested in the calling... she's got to be downwind of me by now???

Sproing! Still no mouse.

So now she starts to "cock herself again", and I figure I don't have much more time, so I hold the top of the 300 yard circle in my Nikon on her head, and let 'er rip!

I missed. [Frown]

But as luck would have it she runs straight at me, Red, startled by the shot, jumps to his knees, the coyote sees this and jerks to a broadside stop just clear of the deep grass, just as the second circle of my cycled rifle settles on her... BOOM!... Tha-WOCK!!

"YEAH!!!" I leapt to my feet, victory, snatched from the jaws of defeat! [Big Grin]

I remember Danny saying, one of his boys says "they are waving good-bye to the world" with the propeller tail, and this one had some long good-byes to make.

We'll have to revisit the "rubbed fur" topic with this one, she had the worst looking pelt.
All of her guard hair, save a scattering down her back, was gone.
What down was left, was matted and stinky.
I think I did her a favor.

She was very small, in fact so small that her size is what lead me to miss her on the first shot.

With just a short trot my way, she went from a shy 300 yards "measured with my scope" to 156 lasered yards at the pick-up (and Red said I knocked her back, two of them, with the shot). [Razz]

I passed on two more coyotes over the weekend, giving Red the shot or the opportunity to shoot, otherwise I might have missed a couple more myself. LOL

I'll post pictures later, if I can, as I stated in the other thread Red and I parted company in disagreement, and it looks like he's not ready to send my photos from his phone yet? [Roll Eyes]

I guess if I was my Krusty I'd be too embarrassed to tell the truth about what really happened on our trip.
For the record I don't mind walking, and walking alot. The problem I have is going through a good place and fouling it up for the return trip. Call good spots on the way out not the way back after they have been spooked. I guess that really pisses him off.
He doesn't tell how he had a complete meltdown, went into a rage everytime I tried to suggest something, how he ripped me off for over 100 bucks for the gas to get the trailer there, or how he said he was gonna blow his fuckin head off, so I had to tackle him to get his rifle back. How the more he yelled the more I kept my cool. I never even raised my voice. How he soccer kicked me in the thigh and I didn't do anything but ask him to please stop. Then to top it off he called the cops on me for taking away his gun that he was "gonna blow his head off and make me watch". Thanks alot bro. If anyone is going out in the field I'd be careful, he is a loose cannon.

I'm guessing those phone pics may not be available any time soon?? [Wink]

DDDDaaamn! That sounds like one hell of a trip. It also makes me think that not having a regular calling buddy isn't so bad.

"DDDDaaamn! That sounds like one hell of a trip."

Lonny,

You don't know the half of it.

And I apologize for my self, and my brother that you guys know what you do. [Frown]

There was no need for either one of us to throw our dirty laundry from our bedroom window. [Smile]

The truth is, I come from a hugely disfunctional family, and sometimes that disfunction spills into other areas of my life... but that's pretty obvious, now, isn't it?

Leonard,

Be a pal, and save me some dishonor, and dishonesty, eh?

I know my brother's password, and I could just delete his post, but I'd really appreciate if you'd just delete the whole topic instead.

This thread, just like the real story, no longer has any value. [Frown]
