I was out calling this weekend with colocoyotes/Dennis and while walking from one stand to the next, we came to a small waterway/creek that we were going to cross. The creek had about a 4' vertical bank on our side and a cattle crossing where I was going to look to see if we could jump the water, or not. As I approached and was looking down, I spotted a coyote that had been coming towards the cow path but had stopped and was looking up the 4' bank, maybe had heard us and was trying to figure out where we went? He was only about 8' away from me. But he had stopped walking, and I noticed him first and it took him about 3 or 4 seconds to notice me. He turned to flee, and even though I missed my first shot, he only got about 15 yards before I dumped him. BUT right away I knew something was wrong with him. I could see the blood on his neck, plus he wasn't nearly as quick and nimble as he should've been! Upon closer inspection, we found that this big 'ol boy had apparently just recently been in an all out knock down brawl with another coyote, or two, or three? None of the blood that you see is from the gun shot. His left ear was torn just about completely in half. His right ear nearly ripped off. A big 'ol hole on his right shoulder, and lots of dry blood on his neck from obvious more puncture wounds. Bloody front legs, and even his tail. The fur all around his neck was mated, probably from being malled on. He was an older coyote from what his long, chipped, and stainded canines show. BUT apparently, he wasn't as tough as he once was, 'cause from the looks of him, he got his ass handed to him. Of course Dennis asked the obvious, what did the other coyote look like, and how big was he? But in my opinion, there was more than one of them. What do you guys think, other coyotes kick the shit out of him? Yard dogs? other guesses?

Man! That's quite a deal, I have never seen anything like it. Very interesting. Thanks for posting.
As far as speculating on what he tangled with, I think if it was a dog or dogs, they would have killed him. I'd guess it was some mating situation and more than likely a male and female ganged up on him, rather than several males.
On the other hand, who knows?

Well, we did actually see a golden eagle that day on that ranch, BUT the fur on the back of the neck was matted like it had been chewed on, and that's the main reason that I don't think an eagle did the damage. Plus, when he ran from me, he wasn't near as quick and nimble as you'd expect a coyote to be, much like he was still stiff and sore all over.

Looks like a coyote that had a fight with a rival group of coyotes or a pack of dogs. I'm betting on a pack of dogs due to the throat marks. I don't see where a rival pack of coyotes would stop if they took the fight to the throat. Dogs on the other hand might give up at any time. You did that coyote a favor. He was a born loser! LOL!

In Southern California I killed a female coyote that had been in an equivalent fight though not quite as fresh. The wounds had glazed and scabbed over, no longer bleeding. It was late Feb. if I remember right.
I thought that she had been hit and rolled under a car on the highway or something like that, but when skinning her I found a long coyote canine tooth embedded against her spine and broken off. One of her canines was broken so I checked but it was not her own tooth, though the match up assured me that it was a coyote. Yep, humdinger of a fight.
