Cal Taylor-Last time we spoke, I told you about the wound my bullets were leaving in coyotes. I am shooting a 40 gr. vmax-moly out of a 22-250. It seems that when the bullet hits bones first, it rapidly expands causing a large hole. One that I could place my fist in. If the bullet does not contact bone first, I don't have the problem. Does this sound correct to you. Anyone else have any ideas?

I think you are right, I have seen this also. Either shoot them further away making sure to miss the shoulder or try a different bullet. I feel that some rifles are worse than others possibly because some score the jacket more than others. I went to a different bullet.

I have seen the 40 grainers blow up on a rib bone at close range. You do get the coyote but it leaves a mess i would rather not deal with.

All you have to do is shoot them in between the ribs. [Roll Eyes]

There are no magic bullets. Well maybe if they can be placed exactly, and the target will pause at the right angle?

Brad,

Try the 55 Grain Vmax. It worked a little better for me. Hitting the shoulder dead center with any bullet is going to cause a splash, but the 55's seemed more forgiving on the marginal shots. Where I just clipped the back of the leg bone.

The best way is just like Jack said. Hit them between the ribs. If you can't do that, at least miss hitting the leg!
