Some of you know that I shoot a .257 Ackley. It has a one in twelve twist. I am satisfied with IMR 4064 for the 100 grain bullets. This rifle has a 26" Shilen barrel, and I think it should shoot the 75 grain Hornady V Max bullets real well. Which powders do you guys think would be best for obtaining max velocity and accuracy with this bullet?

I am not sure of you case capacity, Rich? But, I will tell you what I use in my 25'06 Ackley.

Reloder R-22 with 100 grain bullets =3650fps

AA #2700 with the 75 gr. VMax. =4,000fps

Maybe they will work for you?

If not, I don't see how you could go wrong with H4831 or W760? That's what I used to use before I switched, some time ago.

Good hunting. LB

I picked up some new .257 Roberts brass, and getting ready to do my first fire forming. I plan to begin with 100 grain bullets and IMR 4064. I also picked up a can of Reloader #19, and will try to work up a load with 85 grain ballistic silver tips in the fire formed case. Wish me luck.

I loaded three rounds using 45 grains of IMR-4064 behind a 75 grain Hornady V max, went out and shot em. The brass looks real good, no pressure signs or anything. The three shot group looks like around one inch, which ain't too bad for a fire forming load. I went ahead and loaded 47 more rounds the same way. The fun is just beginning. [Smile]

Cal,
I am going to call it good right there. The load/rifle combo is likely already capable of tighter groups than this old man can shoot.
