Hey everyone. I’ve got a Remington 788 in 22-250 that I just love to shoot. And as accurate as it is, I’d like to make it more so. Someone told me on one of these threads that you can adjust the trigger-pull yourself, but I’m unclear on how to do that. Moreover, I’m not sure I want to mess with that for safety reasons.

So my questions are…..
1) Does anyone know a way to bring the trigger pull down on the 788 safely? Or, would someone have a link pertaining to that? And.....
2) Does anyone have a link for me to check on aftermarket triggers for the rifle? I can’t find anything online. I was told Timney offered triggers for the 788 now but I can’t seem to find any on their website.

Thanks for you help.
Kendall

We need to hope DAA sees this, I'm sure he has at least one 788, and I would be very surprised if he doesn't know something about the trigger situation? Joe F shoots one, too. He should know.

Good luck. LB

Leonard, I'm not Dave or Joe, but maybe I'll do until the real thing comes along [Wink]

Kendall, there is not much the average person can do with a 788 trigger without a good chance of making the thing dangerous.

The trigger on a 788 is a very simple thing, and a fellow can polish the engagement surfaces and lighten the spring rate, but change an angle, or polish through the case hardened surface, and trouble will follow.

The safety only locks the trigger, and proper relationships between the engagement surfaces are all that stands between a good hunt and a very bad time.

I have seen quite a few 788 trigger jobs performed by "kitchen table gunsmiths" that, well...I'll just say that I'd rather be someplace else when the bolt is closed.

As far as the Timney goes, I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for one.

There is a solution however that is even cheaper than the Timney "vapor ware".

Send your trigger unit off to Mike Bryant in Wheeler Texas. For $50 he will make it fully adjustable by drilling, tapping, and installing adjustment screws for overtravel, sear engagement, and pull weight.

I have such a set up on my .222 788, and it is a HUGE improvement. You should be able to get a good clean and SAFE 2 to 3 lb. trigger pull.

Thanks.

Hell, Shaun Frame IS the genuine article.

And there's nothing I can add to what he said - except to say that Mike Bryant does almost all my custom work, and his stuff is top drawer. He's building me a new rifle right now, in fact. But his waiting list is getting to be BRUTAL these days! Not sure if simple trigger jobs have to "wait in line", though. Call him and ask.

Too bad you don't live near Stephenville, Tx my gunsmith Allen George did both my 788's in about 10 minutes and for $10.00. But he is his a rare bird. He hardly as any guns waiting to be worked on, (However he does at least 2500 repairs a year) he can usually do most jobs while you wait or within a day. Amazing guy with more knowledge than I thought was possible. Most other gunsmiths I've seen, seem so lost or behind on work with so little time to even address your problem, meanwhile they got 26 guns in the back collecting dust waiting on a part or something. oh well that's my rant. good luck.
