Hi,
Anyone out there have any experience with the
"new" ranch rifle? Is it that much better then the old ranch rifle? According to the article in " Rifle Shooter mag." they have improved it to the point that they get M.O.A. out of it? Is it true? If it is, I'm getting in line to get one.

If it will maintain a MOA group, I will own one. I prefer the carry style of them to the AR's. I had one of the older ones accurized. never did get it below 1.5 inches. I think I will let someone else try them out and see how it goes. I do like them, just don't want to get another, based on my last esperience.

Baja, it may be that Jack is commenting on the tendency, in gun rag articles, to speak of products in glowing terms, at risk of offending advertizers? Rather than being rude, aybe he is trying to keep you from making a mistake?
What you use for hunting is your business, but for my money, the clank clank cycling of a Mini 14 is worse than it's inaccuracy; and they are certifiably inaccurate.

When I was a kid, I watched a cartoon called Gullivers Travels, there was a guy on there who's only line was "it'll never work" I think of him often after reading Jack's posts.
But I'll keep my AR's and walk around the bull pen.

I've been reading Jack's posts on several boards for a number of years, And I've suggested to Leonard a couple of times that he change Jack's Title to "Resident Curmudgeon"
That's just the way Jack is, he isn't going to try to shine up his opinion to make you feel better about yourself.
But like it or not, you might want to pay some attention to what he says. He's a pretty intelligent old man, and it's pretty rare for me to have ever seen him be wrong.
Don't let the way that he says something, distract you from what he is saying.

It goes without saying, that a man can use whatever he likes, but you will find very few people that use a Mini 14 in a predator hunting application and you should ask yourself; "why is that"?
As a truck gun; okay, that's different. Everybody comes to these message boards for a slightly different reason, but one is to seek consensus. It is normal to assume that a questioner is looking for quality advice, and has limited knowledge of the subject. For the average coyote hunter, a Mini 14 is a step in the wrong direction....for several reasons.
Now, we give Jack thirty lashes with a wet noodle every once in a while, (for his caustic wit) but the guy knows his shit. When I was looking for someone to take over my duties as moderator on the firearms forum of Predator Masters, I recommended Jack. That should tell you something of how I value his opinions....and he knows more than I do, by a long shot.
Don't be sensitive, Baja. Jack is like many others here, he truly wants to help people that ask for advice and (actually) has a gift of brevity, something I could use, occasionally, like now.

Bajabug:I know you are upset cause you did'nt hear what you wanted to here on the issue of the ranch rifle. I'll try to make you feel better. The ranch rifle is a nice little rifle and if you feel that you should get one, go ahead. I have owned a few and was not happy with them but hey this is 2006 and maybe by now they got it right.
If it turns out to be a good one then great, if not i don't want to here about it...... ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

I owned a mini-14 once, and killed a lot of coyotes with it. I was pretty happy with the little rifle until I made the mistake of shooting a few groups on paper. The guys are telling you the truth about the mini's being less than accurate. I am hoping that Ruger finally got the message and actually built a new Ranch rifle that shoots well. I,m pretty sure that you will need to have someone do a trigger job on it for you though. If you buy a new Ranch Rifle, please let us know how well it shoots.
