Nobody has any advice for this guy? [Roll Eyes]

Hodgie,

Welcome to Huntmasters.

I am not an expert, but I have called in a lion.

I didn't do anything any differently then I'd do in a coyote hunting stand, and I was lucky enough to not have to do it for long.

This is not the usual case. I got lucky. [Wink]

Most lion callers first try to establish there are lions in the immediate area, by finding fresh kills, or tracking them in a fresh snow.
Then they set up to call using deer distress sounds, sometimes cougar in heat sounds, and sometimes in conjunction with a decoy (usually a fawn decoy or a deer cape).
Some callers will stay on stand, calling almost continuously, for an hour or more.

From what I have read, and where I see the most lion kills, lions travel a lot on the ridge tops.
If you can find a good calling spot where several ridges come together, this is supposed to increase your chances.

But I dunno much... hopefully some of the guys who actually have some experience at it, will come along and add to my advice.

thanks krusty I have yet to see a lion that Ive called in. I say that because I am constantly calling in good lion country and my hunting buddies have all called in more than one and we hunt the same areas. well at least I like to think that Ive called one in. They were just hunting coyotes and called them in also. I guess I would like to know if I were to go out and target lions this winter what kind of lion sounds do you use and when? how do you use them. I have some friends that dont think you can call one in and would like to prove them wrong this year. I know its tough but I have the time and energy to do it just wanted to get off to a good start.

Welcome to the New Huntmasters, hodgie73. Glad to have you on board.

As far as sounds that you can duplicate with a mouth call, there aren't many that I know of? If you use standard doe distress, that is a good choice in electronics. Some report great success with lion mating sounds and kitten whistles, but I have no experience with that?

The biggest part of the equation, calling in the best lion habitat, you already know. For me, that always means; look for good deer areas.

And, you have another step up, in your belief that it is possible. It is possible. However, the odds will be against you, in the short term.

Good luck, LB

Almost overlooked, I should point out that lions are called successfully with a rabbit distress. Silly of me to not mention it, as I have done it myself. Still, long odds. Call on sign, if possible.

Good hunting. LB

I did write that on my calendar! [Razz]

No really, thanks Danny, that's mighty nice of you to say.
I have learned a LOT in these past few years, some of it about predator calling even (most of it about getting along with others though). [Wink]

Leonard,

I was using a "generic small furry in distress" sound (rabbit) when I got hit by lightning, I mean the lion came in.
And we hadn't seen anything that resembled lion sign.

All part of "Krusty's Razor".
This is something I always said about winning races, but it applies to calling critters well too.

The first time is pure luck.
The second time is merely a coincidence.
It's not until the third time you can say you had anything to do with making it happen (and then yer probably stretchin' the truth, see me at the end of the season). [Big Grin]

Hodgie,

I forgot to mention the most important part in lion calling, a good partner.
If I hadn't had my brother along with me, covering my back, that lion would have gotten to me without me ever seeing it.

Hodgie73,
Work the scratch and scrape lines. they are there if you look for them. Find a fresh kill and set up away from it and call. Each lion is an individual and will use land features as they travel. cut them off. You must do an incredable amout of scouting and homework to be successful, but it all is worth it in the end. OR you can come see me for instructions.

Stev,
do mainly use distress sounds or lion sounds. Im sure you use bolth I hear through the grapevine that you are the best lion caller around. Whats your success rate on your lion hunts how many stands on average before you see a lion?
thanks

Hodgie73,
I am not the best lion hunter. I do pretty well though. I love lion hunting. I love calling them in. There are other hound men who are much more successful than I. Although one hound man locally told me that i called more lions in a year than his hounds treed. Maybe he has bad dogs or something, but i dont think so. On average, it takes me 3-4 days to call in one lion for a client. Sometimes more, sometimes less. What few realize is it takes 100's of man hours of scouting to be able to call a lion in for a client. Sometimes they go home without seeing a thing. That's Lion hunting!

What would you say the best time of day for calling

The best time of day? Probably doesn't matter much, as long as a cat is in close proximity, and you are undetected.

The best time to call is at night. That's when they are hunting, and interacting socially.

At least, this is my belief. Steve, or anyone else should feel free to disagree.

Good hunting. LB

Leonard,

I am sure not going to disagree with you. But I'll add, you should check your game laws. Some states list lions as a game animal, and don't allow taking them at night.

Dang, I guess that raises an interesting dilema.
You're calling at night, and a lion comes in, you make it aware you are human... does it care?
Is it going to react like a bear and most likely leave?

All cats are easier to call at night. I call more lions from 10am to 2pm than at any other time of day though. When you figure that one out, you will be well on your way to understanding lion behavior.
