I have been trying to come up with a new ranch to hunt for our next Video effort. I landed one today in West Texas that is only slightly hunted by family members. 25,000 acres of broken ground, ravines, draws, bunk facility, Dark of the Moon and a friend who works on the place. They will let us have 3 or 4 days to call coyotes cats and coons day or night.

With the growth of hunting as a revenue stream for these ranches, it has become increasing harder to find ranches that will let us do our coyote hunting anywhere close to the deer seasons. One of my favorite South Texas ranches leased out to some guys that do a bunch of Archery so I was turned down on that 10,000 acres of cactus creek bottom country.

I hate the pressure created by the need to have to beg for access to do these videos. With that out of the way I can enjoy the time leading up to the hunt. I have three new sounds that I will be testing on this video. I am looking forward to getting to use one of our sponsor guns on these coyotes. I have added a TC .223 Encore to the vault which should fit my style of hunting well(only one shot needed)....cause I never can hit the second one anyway. [Wink]

Big Al Morris with HS will be the camera guy. I know it will kill him to not have a gun in his hands. My friend says they have more coyotes than they can handle so I am hopeful the stars will line up for a good hunt and we can get some on film.

Today was a good day. [Razz]

Wow, seems like these ranchers would welcome you with open arms?

I hope it turns out well, and if you need another shooter, let me know. [Smile]

Good hunting. LB

Alot of them just don't like to have a bunch of activity and shooting going on during deer season. The Game Wardens get real antsy about spotlights going everywhere during deer season also.

It's not that I can not find a place to go on, it's the fact that it interferes with other hunting seasons. If it's not deer, it's Quail Hunters roaming all over the place. I have places that will let me utilize the ranch in the off season, but that cuts out a whole bunch of the year that I need for writers trips, field testing and video work.

There is nothing more agravating than to have a coyote coming into your call and have the boom boom and whistles going off right over the hill. The coyotes get real nervous.

Leonard. Every thing in Texas has a price. When we shot our last Coyote video for Lohman it was $320 a day per man. That did include food, lodging and transportation. I expect any day now to open the Houston paper and see Armadillo, and Jackrabbit leases or day hunts.

All the game belongs to the people of Texas. The problem is 90% of the land is private. So we get to pay a trespass fee. You cant sale game, but it is sure funny how the trespass fee is figured on the animal you are hunting. We are about five years behind Africa and gaining fast.

Good luck Gerald. Looking forward to a report on those new sounds.

For the most part Varmit Hunter I am still able to do tradeoff's for access. I haven't had to pay cash yet but that day is coming. We pay in a variety of other ways but it is not excessive.

I cut another great Jackrabbit sound today I am anxious to get in the field with.

There are benefits to hunting here in Minnesota. We have far fewer critters but the main deer season where I hunt is only 6 days long in November. After that, access is easy. I typically contact between 50 and 75 landowners each year. Most I just call on the phone, tell them who I am and what I want. I get about 90% success that way. The ones who turn me down usually say they hunt themselves or have already given permission to someone.

Gerald,

Keep in mind that I hunt with a .17rem and shoot with surgical precision. If Q can't make it that day, just sign me up... He might slow you down as he stops to skin all those coyotes. I'll be happy to leave 'em lay as we move to the next stand. [Big Grin]

Gerald,

Unlike those other two, I'm skilled with both the 17 Remington, .243, 10 Ga. Shotgun and various handguns.

I won't slow you down to skin each coyote, or rush you off to make the next stand.

I always pause at each coyote long enough to utilized a coyote properly by photography before heading out to kill another.

And Nistetter will tell you, I have no problem holding a shot until the camera man is ready.

I asked first, you bunch of beggers!

I only have two rules for riding in my rig, no drinking, and no seventeens.

Good hunting. LB [Wink]

edit: I forget, maybe it was "no dipping", or might have been, no swearing? Smoking? I don't remember what the other rule was, right now, but I'm sure I don't allow seventeens.

I'm kind of POed right now. there we were sat through a bunch of commercials and right before the 4:00 show, the power went out? What a chinese fire drill, getting refunds in the lobby. We intended to see the 40 year virgin, Krusty's life story.
(you know, ¿no tengo coyote?)
but I guess we will have to try again tomorrow?

Understanding the coyote is not as important as knowing where they are.
I usually let the fur prime up before I leave 'em lay.

Leonard,

I'm much easier to get along with. I allow drinking, cussing, dipping, farting and rifles of any size.

My secondary rule is no kill is counted if it is not physically touched by the shooter or his rifle barrel.

My main rule is once the first beer is opened, all rifles will be unloaded and all hunting ceases until the next day. I love to hunt, and I like drinking a cold beer, but I refuse to be in the company of those who want to mix the two.

Jay,

I'm the guy married to Joyce.

Mr. Stewart. Would you ever consider taking a non-expert along (like me) [Smile] to make a video?

Mostly I see experts doing their "expert thing" on camera and nobody knows really what all it takes to get to their level except other "real" experts. I read lots of advice from internet experts. If you made a video of you talking, tutoring and teaching a student on camera, it might add a refreshing twist for a video.

Mostly guys don't like to admit that they are rookies about hunting coyotes and secretly add several years (and tall tales) to their touted experience, so a video where an expert like you taking someone under his wing would be a chance of a lifetime and may sell more videos than you think because it's not just the killing to most true hunters.

Just some of my thoughts about back to basics.

tag line corrected. Thanks.

Oh well, we'll just have to go make our own videos...

About places to hunt: I contact the local Constable’s office and visit with them about hunting predators. The reason is because they are bothered with phone calls all the time from people calling them up telling them the just saw wolves, lions or lost their pet. I assume they think if they turn a coyote into a wolf and a bobcat into a lion, they will get a faster response.

Sometimes the Constable gives the people my number to call and there has been times the Constable called me to give me the phone number the people to call.

I don’t get but 1 or 2 calls a month out of it and usually turns out to be nothing, but even the “nothing” is important because my number will eventually be passed on to somebody interested through casual conversations.

Does that make sense?

Mark,

Quinton Wagoner and I talked about that on one of our hunts. Like I told him, a lot of us guys that have been doing this go about our techniques not realizing the hundreds of little things that have become second nature to us, if only through repitition. When I take a neophyte along, invariably the mistakes they make are things I didn't even realized I avoided by habit. Walking is a biggy with me. The way I walk into a setup is almost stealthy compared to the big foot in cornflakes and broken lightbulbs like some new guys. It isn't that I'm a better walker, or that I consciously walk a specific way. I just realized some years ago, after being busted a few times, that I needed to find a way to get there more quietly and did it. Now it's just habit. And that's just one example. There has to be hundreds of others. Great idea.

--------------------
I am only one. But still, I am one. I cannot do everything, but still, I can do something; and, because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.
