Author Topic: Making Money Jack Roberts Knows what it's all about Member # 13 posted August 22, 2005 07:27 PM                    There was a thunderstorm through here this afternoon that started some fires. For the last 3.5 hours there has been a steady stream of airplanes and helicopters cycling in and out of Elko. Pretty normal for this time of year, and a good thing as it sure brings a lot of money to the West. Fire is about the only way the rural West gets some of the federal taxes they paid back. Fire season is good for business. An awful lot of people depend on fire for their livelihood. The mayor & a couple council people. Wanting to get rid of us, replaced with all volunteer. They formed a [hand-picked...non-bias, yah right!] committee, to see if it's viable.[Save taxpayer's some money, eh] Told one of the #**#-head councilman. That guy[another councilman] who spearheaded this operation. Should show some "leadership" et volunteer FIRST! Told him, I'd love for him to be on the nozzle, on a working house fire...I'd be right behind my [esteemed leader]... His responce "I have a negative ATTITUDE"...Hmmm . Chicken-spin, come to mind . We have had several fires buring around here for the past couple of weeks. Many of the small communities really can use the extra money that comes with a fire. Restaurants, grocery stores, hardware, equipment rental, motels, fuel service, airports, hiring locals to help, the list goes on and on. On many of these fires money is no object and they don't have time to shop around looking for the best deals. Even after a fire is over the salvage logging, fence rebuilding, re-seeding of trees all adds money to the local economy. The grocery store in a small town near here had a tough time keeping Copenhagen (along with everything else) in stock with all the firefighters in town. Many stores will stay open 24 hours a day to cater to the fire people. My Mom owens a dry cleaning business and her most profitable and busiest times are when fires are burning in the area. My Dad is retired but he decided to take summer work refueling helicopters and driving fuel truck for the fire season. The local prison has crews trained and they send them out to fight fires also. The prisoners don't make much money, but the prison can get some big dollars by supplying manpower. Also crashed a plane 8 miles North of town, but the pilot walked away. The plane was a single engine turboprop crop duster, probably close to one million dollars. I think they put them out before they got too big? Okay, fair enough, I made a sarcastic remark, need to be careful about that, huh? Accept my apologies. Some westerners have heard so much about the trials and tribulations of the eastern coyote hunter that they have started to poke a little fun at them. If the coyotes in Pennsylvania are so difficult to hunt, some of us would wonder why they don't take up something a little easier; like duck hunting or rabbits, some quarry that they can tackle without months and years of frustration. If the coyote was so impossible to hunt out west, I'd find something better to do. I would not create a fiction about a completely different animal that is smarter than the average college graduate. In other words, western hunters have read so much about the problems of eastern hunters that they have long ago started to joke about it. It's not just me that is having a little fun with the heartbreak stories from SOME of the easterners. In fact, most of us sort of roll our eyes at these insurmountable problems faced by easterners. So, it's like this. Laugh and joke around on boards that are oriented towards western conditions, thereby learning a few things about coyote hunting out west, and how to apply it successfully, or join an eastern coyote hunter support group. Which have not helped anybody. I'm very sorry that I hurt your feelings, but you need to get a little bit of a thick skin if you intend to hang around here. I try to be sensitive to feelings, I really do, but at some point; I just have to suggest that you get over it, or you might be better off somewhere else? I was just screwing around when I said my feelings were hurt. I don't have any. And you won't hear me whining about impossible to kill Pa coyotes, because I have called in and killed some of them. Although the Pa. coyote is smarter, faster, bigger, prettier and the males more well hung, (just like the people of Pa.), than the western coyote. They are not impossible to kill. Fair enough? And you didn't have to tell me, I always knew you were a mean, crotchety, old bastard.
