Went spot/stalking this am. Got in my area @ 0830. Wind, SowWester @ 5mph, snow was 5" deep & loud. 0900, spotted a big ole boy, just bedding down in a picked corn 5/8 mile out. Drove on past him.

Hunted another 1.5hrs = no coyotes.

Came back, yup he's sleeping good. Humped out .5 mile, just East of the sleeper by a 1/4 mile. Walked slowly & slid my feet, for a quieter stalk.

Set-up on the East/West fenceline[middle of the section]. I had a large wide valley to my West & North, with good views. Set-up my Cass Creek Nomad e-caller. South of me 100'. I'm on the fenceline, facing North-West.

Clicked the "Nomad" button, she's a no-go [Roll Eyes] . The hand-held, doesn't have an "off" switch [runs down batteries easily]. I took out my "back-up", a CRIT'R Standard [Smile] . Commenced to squallin.

I'm slowy panning West to North, looking for my boy. 5 minutes later, here he comes loping Eastbound [Cool] . 150yrds out, I'm getting ready to lip-squeek. He drops over the side of the valley. I reposition Charlene.

Next time I see him, he's loping broadside 300yrds out now [Mad] , oh well. I give out some quick lip-squeeks, he stops broadside. Bang!, a tad low. He kicks on the burners, going straight North bound. I start dumping my mag on his carcass. He never slowed.

Seen another walker 1/2 mile out. Just watched him for awhile. Wife called my cell phone. My .243 WSSM AR upper came in, oh yah [Cool] More "thump" for Charlene on the long ones.

Well it's about time that 243wssm upper came in!!! [Big Grin]

I'm nearly out of vacation time (sick kid, sick wife, sick jeep, sick truck... now I don't have PTO for me to be sick of work and go hunting....) otherwise I'd come up for a day to cover your downwind with my 22-250. (wife's well now, kid's well now, jeeps well now ($120), Truck is getting there (back from one mechanic yesterday, goes in for more work Saturday....)

Are you having alot of problems with your nomad? No off switch, that's nuts... Guess you could always take a binocular bag, fill it with cotton balls, and toss the nomad/remote in. The cotton would keep the buttons from being pushed and the batteries running down??? [Confused]

2dogs,

We got to see the end results of one of those .243 WSSM's in Colorado. Tom, our host, was using one. Twice. Big holes. Hope you're good with a needle and thread. [Smile]

Not a bad idea Scruff. Can't expect much for the price I paid, I guess. It does work pretty well otherwise. But ya just can't really beat a mouth-call. Especially for changing pitches.

It even fell in a snow drift[it was hanging off of a cornstalk], blew it off. Still works fine.

Frankly, I like stalking better [Big Grin] .

Had another couple of inches of snow last night and it's still snowing. [Big Grin] Nice gentle snow fall. Hope your getting some up your way. Very light and fluffy and quieter to walk on.

Are you moving your Nikon from your bushy upper to the new wssm upper? Is your range open? Atleast there's not much wind today, although the high is only supposed to be what, 14? I don't know if there is enough moon to hunt by yet but if there is you could sight it in today and call tonight with it. It'll be -5 tonight, that should get the coyotes up and moving.

If there's enough moon I might do one stand early after dark, but probably not. Someones got to keep the woodburner full on a night like tonight, might as well be me. [Wink]
