We're getting awfully antsy around here. Went out and killed one to get a landowner to ease up on asking us to kill 'em all, but we're reigning ourselves in right now. Come on, frost!!!

I feel your pain fellas; but I did slip out thursday morning for my first stand of the season, and called a smallish male, took him with my 19 calhoon. Think Im going to hold off for just a couple more weeks, just not enough nip in the air here yet, to feel like hunting season.

we have had several good freezes, and one good snow, and it's supposed to snow again tonight. I killed a few coyotes last week and all would have been skinable.

Yeah, I'm getting the bug pretty bad myself.I've been out a couple times here locally, but I am getting excited to get out where the real coyote calling is. I did manage to call up a couple a couple weeks back.(sorry about the blurry picture all I had was my Cell Phone and it takes crappy pictures. ![-](http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r95/UTcaller/Sept2007Jerichocoyote.jpg)

I took my pup out hoping to call in a few but the woods are just really thick and all. Besides it's fall turkey season, so I need to get a bird for the freezer.
Did a little scouting and saw a few bucks, so I may try to stick an arrow in a whitetail or two. [ October 21, 2007, 05:59 PM: Message edited by: DanS ]

Well we made it back from Nevada.Had a pretty good hunt.Better than some years and not as good as others. We ended up killing 15 coyotes in 4 days of hunting.Probably would have had more time to hunt but ran into alittle mechanical problem in the truck. But hey that's part of the fun right?lol
I did see a really nice heavy horned Buck deer out there that would have been nice to hang on my wall.LOL probably 30+ wide...
We managed to even call a couple Bobcats real close.I got a picture of one of them that I post when I get a chance.
All in all it's just nice to get away for a little while to get some calling in.

Hey Chad, how did the .204 with the 45 gr. sp's work, assuming you killed a few of those with it!

TRnCO,
Of the 8 coyotes I shot,I shot only 2 with the 45's.The first two..I didn't like the way they would react when I hit them(coyotes). They ran for a ways before they piled up.And they had alittle more damage than I like,so I went back to the 35 bergers and back to the bang/flops and little or no damage on the last six.Go figure.Maybe I just need to just keep using the 45's for a while and see if it was just a fluke. But then again those Bergers do a hell of a job on coyotes.

Welcome to Huntmasters Dogdinger. No, I don't mind at all...I'm using 28.0 grains of H4895 with Remington 7 1/2 primers they're running about 3850-3900 fps out of the muzzle.

Chad, Do you have any fur damage with the bergers?
And have you ever tried the V-max's? I just got a 204 and I'm still trying to find a good load...thanks

Personally, VMax and fur friendly seem a contradiction in terms? I'm not saying it's not possible, but I have yet to see a VMax bullet, in any caliber, not cause significant damage.
On the other hand, Bergers can be very destructive and they can be fur friendly, you just have to use the right one at the right velocity and twist rate. Find out what others are using and having good luck with, and try it for yourself. That will shorten the learning curve.
And, it has to have acceptable accuracy. That's the way it is and always has been.
I'm actually a little surprised at Chad's performance with the 45 grain bullet? What bullet exactly? Does sp mean spire point or an abreviation for spitzer? Sounds like a Hornady, if I had to guess?
It is beginning to sound like the 204 is dependant on bullets, just like the 17 Remington and similiar? Well, that's not particular to those cartridges, but hunters using those type of cartridges are looking for certain specific performance characteristics. Just like Chad says; bang/flops with little or no damage. When you have a plan that works, a little fine tuning is great, but.....
Yes, I know. Then, you also want down range performance.
I'm thinking there is a bullet out there, probably over the horizon, a HP with a little heavier constructed jacket, maybe a copper bullet that will do what's required, without surface splash and stay inside the animal at most encountered ranges.
We ain't found it yet, have we?

Leonard, I think Barnes' new Varmint Grenade is about what you just described. It only comes in .224 right now at (I think) 36 grains. The bullet is supposed to be as long as a 55gr Nosler even though it is so light. I haven't heard much else about it yet. Anybody else? Hopefully it will be offered in .204 soon.

The .224 Barnes VG's I tried were a disaster. Terrible accuracy. So bad, I never even tried them on flesh. They were early pre-production samples sent to me for testing. The accuracy issues may have been worked out on the production version. By their very design though, they should be about the worst bullet for surface splash currently available. They are intended to blow small varmints into a million pieces, not penetrate heavier muscle and bone.
Even assuming your rifle shoots them well, my opinionated guess is that they should be just a gawd awful coyote bullet.
That really is just a guess though. I have not used them on any live animals. So maybe I'm just completely wrong.
My own search for a .204 caliber bullet to suit my needs is totally different than what you guys shooting .204 Ruger's are looking for. I'm using cases with a lot more capacity and much higher velocities. The Berger 40's at 4300 fps just blow up on contact, no penetration and not very clean kills. I'm not even looking for "fur friendly". Big exit holes would be okay with me for my application. Under 40 grains weight and a decent B.C. to get the 400 yard trajectory I want, and tough enough to give good penetration (with at least decent expansion), is what I'm after. Pretty hopeful that I'll get there, soon. Currently waiting on some pre-production samples for testing, that I think are finally going to do everything I want them to. Going to be 38 gr., flat base, with long sleek 10S noses. One design a lead tip, the other a HP. One batch each of the lead tip and HP's on .224 jackets, the other on .243 jackets. And one batch each bonded core in each of the above, one batch each without the core bonded. I'm highly optimistic that one or more of these will work well in my "big twenties" (.20BR and .20-250).
I've only shot a few coyotes with the Hornady 45's, not enough to form any solid conclusions. At almost 4100 fps, they did anchor those few coyotes pretty well though.

P.S... Forgot to mention my reason for even posting, duh...
I could have sworn that I read somewhere that Barnes has indeed anounced Varmint Grenades in .204.

Yip Leonard, Hornady 45 gr. soft points.
There will also be a .20 cal. 26 gr. VG available soon, BUT I doubt it'll be much good for coyotes.
I've had good luck with the 40 gr. bergers, running about 3700 fps, so far. A couple ugly exits, but plenty of penetration so far, BUT my longest shot was only 140 yards so far. I've got a 35 gr. berger load worked up too, BUT I haven't shot a coyote with them yet. I wanted to start with the 40's. Anxious to hear your results with the new bullets DAA!

I've only shot around 10 coyotes total with the 45 soft points, and they seemed to work great on the first 8 but the last two were less than desired.(like I said could be a fluke)But I wasn't confident enough out there so I went back to the 35 berger hollowpoints. The 45's I have shot have all been factory Hornady's.I do have a box of 45 grain SP bullets that I would like to work up a load with though.
I am very impressed with the 35 bergers on coyotes out to 300 yrds or so.Pelt damage ranges from little entrance hole and no exit to a quarter sized exit hole.I have hit a couple high in the back that had fist sized exit hole. And one direct hit in the shoulder that was messy but it did penetrate and didn't surface splash.
I'm with Leonard on the Vmax and the VG's definetly not coyote bullets.
Leonard we were hunting Northwest of Elko.

Good hunt, Chad. I have had a few decent hunts in that general area. I found shelter, one time, in a ranch house, and waited out a blizzard. Couldn't locate the road, a herd of cattle milling around obliterating it, not to mention, cold as hell. Next morning, all hell broke loose.
Thanks for sharing. LB

Yeah, it really was a fun trip.Speaking of the weather. That High Desert is definitely extreme.10-14 degrees in the morning up to almost 70 degrees in the afternoon.Tough to dress for the situation. One minute you're shaking and shivering from the cold next minute you're shedding half you're clothes cause it's to hot.LOL
