My 11 year old just got his first called coyote. We were actually hunting pheasants. When my dad drove us into a farmer's yard to ask permission, we saw this coyote running not too far from the yard hunting cats I think. When the truck pulled in, he ran for the still standing corn and disapeared a couple of hundred yards away.

The farmer gave us permission to hunt birds and told me I was welcome to call that coyote. So we left to another field of his, hunted birds for an hour or so and when we went back past the farmer's house, I asked dad to drop us off real quick and continue driving down the road a mile or so and come back in 10 - 15 min. Jacob and I sat in front of some small evergreen bushes and called. Who knows what I really sounded like but I was trying to do a kitty meow thing. I told Jacob to keep the scope moving because I thought the coyote might only pop his head out of the corn for a better look but he came a trottin' right out and headed for the downwind. I stopped him once and nothing. I stopped him again and bang.

The shot was a bit low (a gut hanger outer shot) but I knew he was done for. He took another shot at the laying coyote but missed, and the coyote ran to the corn. I knew it would be easy to find because there was fresh snow. We found him about 30 yards into the corn but very much alive but not trying to get up. It spooked Jacob, parting the corn stalks and finding a live coyote so closed to his feet. I killed the critter. Then and as I reached down to grab the scruff of the neck, I told Jacob to lift his lips to see the teeth. When he did, I gave the coyote's head a good jerk and growl/barked sending poor Jacob about 3 feet vertical with a yelp of his own, right there in the corn! Dirty rotten dad!

Good story and good for Jacob, Loco. And yes, that was evil. [Wink]

Good job, Jacob. Pretty soon you will be helping Dad out of the truck, but not if it's a little cold. Can you get a driver's license when you're twelve?

Good hunting. LB

edit: and, you favor your mom, btw.
