Well I have always dreamed of going to Africa to call. I would like to look into it a little more and see if its possible for me to go sometime in my lifetime. I remember Leonard and Q have been, not sure if anybody else on here have made the journey but does anybody have suggestions and when and where to go?

I have a suggestion. Scrap the idea and work on gettin Cal to take you to the King Ranch instead. Thats my plan. ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

Going to anywhere in southern Africa, Johannesburg, or if you are an idiot, Zimbabwie, the trip is a killer. Literally. For me it involved two 10½ hour flights with six hours between flights. I felt like a Zombie, upon arrival, same on the return trip. Being young is an advantage, I suppose, but the message is that you should book a fairly long hunt. Mine was 13 days, I guess there are some good deals to Tanzania for 17 days and that would iron out the jet lag for you.
I think there are two flights weekly, from Atlanta, Delta, probably operated by South African crews. That's a 15 hour flight. Whatever, getting there is half the fun, right?
There is no need to hunt the big five or any other dangerous game and I didn't. Very expensive! but, there is no doubt that you can hunt more exotic game in two weeks than a lifetime in the U.S. pursuing native animals, and do it for half the price.
I spent most days on what you expect and most nights calling jackals and blanking on caracal, which was a big disappointment.
To me, a lot of southern Africa looks much like Arizona. And, considering that Arizona is difficult to put in a box, with their 13 climate zones, it was a interesting comparison. All the Acacia trees look just like the various cats claw and mesquite we see in AZ. Vicious, you can't plow your way through it, this stuff will rip the shirt off your back if you aren't careful.
Be prepared to kill every animal you shoot because lost cripples will cost you the same. I kind of like the arrangement, you pay for what you kill, rather than here, or Canada, where you pay for a hunt and a license and it doesn't matter if you don't kill anything.
I think it is an interesting experience, but am indifferent if I ever go again. Maybe, but if not, that's okay too.
Go to US Customs before leaving, bring your guns, of course, and get a declaration, itemizing your stuff, (only two allowed) because when you get off the plane, the Africans consider this to be your "firearm permit" and you will not be subject to duty upon your return, which is the actual purpose.

At this point in my life I really have no desire to kill any exotics maybe it might change when I get over there. Right now my main reason for going would be for varmints, Jackal, Caracal, etc...
Would you advise a trip like this?

Actually, no. They are so like coyotes that I started calling them coyotes by the second night. It would be not a very big deal to go there and hunt jackal, but the caracal might tempt me? That's an exotic I would really like to have my picture taken with, but I believe there is a CITES (sp) problem with bringing one back, not sure?
That would be a lot of money spent just to kill jackals, in my opinion, not worth it. Same old, same old. Ya know?
If you go, be sure to tell us about it, and for sure, bring your own gear.

Whats the caracal population like? Kind like bobcats here in the state? Kill one every once in awhile? Or are there areas that hold good numbers? Isn't there another cat they consider a varmint?

It seems like Quinton posted a great deal for an African varmint rip awhile back (maybe it was an email)...The guide was Hein??? I think. Shoot him an email and ask. It seems like his prices were exceptional for some of the smaller antelope critters - not the big kudos and such but really great prices for the smaller exotics as well as lots of jackal and caracal. I'll look for his website; I might have it!

Okay, I remember now. Quinton has hunted with Hein. One time on HM I mentioned that I would love to go to Africa one day and the next day I received an email from Hein with his pricing. I still have the email and I'll forward it to you. It might of been a special at the time or something like that, but it will give you an idea anyway.
