Since its snowing right and I'm a little bored because of the weather now I decided to start getting my "stuff" ready for a bit of fur hunting beginning maybe next week and got to thinking about what all you guys do to get ready for predator hunting?

Me, I've already resighted my rifle (mod 7 in 223) and patterned my short barrelled rem 12 gau pump a couple of days ago. So guns & ammo are ready.

I started to try and locate all of my calls as they are scattered throughout my house, garage, truck & in the pockets of several of my jackets and parkas. So far the assembled count is 42 plus about a dozen that I haven't located yet. I don't collect calls so I was a bit surprised at the count. A few of those found need maintenance as my grandsons were practicing with them. I usually grab about 5 calls out of the bunch plus my wolf howler and a coyote howler to go with me.

Got the 4 wheeler (ATV to you southerners)stripped of my big game gear and need only to do an oil change with some 5 weight. That is unless there is too much snow and then the snow go will be used. But it hasn't been ran since last winter. That will be taken care of tomorrow maybe?

My truck, well it is always ready but as I blew a trailer bearing two weeks ago and haven't got around to fixing it and with snow coming down that propect is not inviting. I pulled the shell off the truck so now I'm red necking it when hauling the 4 whlr or sno go.

Clothes? Well what ever the weather dictates. They are always ready and as I just finished moose season (it was 5 degrees) they are organized.

Can't think of much else except to wait through the weekend for the out of town moose, caribou & sheep hunters to get gone.

License is in the pocket and all but Lynx are open now.

What am I missing? Seems too easy?

So how do you guys prep???

Since I call all year long I'm always ready. It's just a matter of replenishing the various urines that I use, the calls that I leave on stands and the camo nets that get shredded on the chapparel.

Sounds like you pretty well have it covered...For you guys in Alaska I would guess the biggest thing would be weather preperation. I just got back from spending 11 days in Alaska. Went as far as Slana and spent some time there and on Hwy 8. As well as other parts of Alaska and down south to Seward. Beautiful country.

Vehicle gets prime consideration. Ammo, next.

Everything else is always ready to go.

Then, I clip my toenails.

Good hunting. LB

What I do before that first trip out is pretty much the same as what I do before every trip out. I'll go down to the shop the night before and make sure the calls and stuff are all neatly stowed in my vest, my cammies are ready, ammo is ready, etc., etc.. Maybe load the ATV into the back of the truck after topping off its fuel tank. All the stuff everyone else does. Then, after I get home from hunting the next day, I run to the shop and rip everything off, toss it on the bench, the floor, wherever gravity will hold it down. Then run upstairs because, with few exceptions, I always get home about an hour or two later than what I'd told the wife I would be and by now, she's kinda hot that supper's cold, the kids and her have already eaten, and once again, I "miscalculated" my trip. Usually, the last hunt of last season and the first hunt of this upcoming season are only separated by about a week or two if life hasn't been too busy. The actual period of time that separates the two is commonly referred to as "Wednesday". For the most part, my gear is ready to go at a moment's notice since I may get the wild idea to put in one stand after work while still at work, prompting me to clock out, run like hell, change clothes and jet out the door. You can never be too ready to call, nor should you ever find yourself not ready at all..

LKVL -

As far as Slana?? That is just down the road.Should have headed up futher. Damn now I have to look up highway 8 and see what it is called. This is lower 48 plot using numbers!! See none of us around here use road numbers. Heck we don't know them. Highways are all idnetified with names, like Nebesna Road, Taylor Highway, Denali Highway, etc.. Tourists ask us where such and such # highway is. We ask him where he is headed. Some times they think we are getting too personal and just walk away. Oh well.

You passed through some incrediable hunting area there.
