Do you go by its size and body weight? Maybe its age as told by tooth wear? How about its history? Did it trick you as much or as often as you tried to trick it? Maybe its still going and your trophy quest continues?

Deer are judged solely by their head gear. Is this the wrong way to look at them - judge them not by the structure of their rack, but by the content of their character, if you will? if so, how do you judge the worthiness of any coyote as a trophy versus just another hash mark on the rifle stock? Or, do you think a coyote can even be considerred worthy of the title "Trophy".

I'll start - Nemesis. I did the article on him a while back after spending most of two years chasing him. He was the first real problem coyote I managed to outmaneuver and come out on top. There have been others since, and the chore has become easier with each subsequent problem coyote, but Nemesis will always stand out as my first and most memorable. I began thinking about this last night as I put the finishing touches on his skull which I restored for a desktop Euro mount. The farmer asked me why in the hell I would want that stinkin' ol' coyote head when I went there to recover it after his "demise". I told him that this head, nasty and dried up with maggots throughout it, was my 16-point Booner whitetail rack and having it on the shelf above my work center where I write would always remind me of the time he and I went 'round and 'round.

I have been told it's a cultural thing, to an extent. African trophy hunters from Germany look for old animals with freak racks, past their prime. The Spanish, (supposedly) strongly object to a female zebra, even though it's very hard to pick out the sexes at a distance. Macho thing. The English want Roland Ward record book heads.

As far as I'm concerned, I wouldn't mount my longest shot, if it is an animal in poor shape. I think I would like to have as perfect a specimen as possible, prime pelt. I wouldn't care if he was an easy kill, just a large animal without torn up ears and a big blocky head. I think I'm going to get him in Canada?

Now, the real question is how do you mount a coyote? Fierce open mouth snarl, alert, cunning lowered head, blank stare? I think I prefer an intelligent alert look. I don't need to see the teeth. Shoulder mount.

Good hunting. LB

I guess I gotta say I consider all of them trophies. They have earned my respect anyway...

To me it's the old, heavy, worn to the nub canine toothed males, with a few battle scars thrown in for good measure, that make a trophy.
Im with you Leonard, not that Ive ever contemplated getting a coyote mounted, but if I did, it certainly wouldn't be in that god awful snarling mode. They do the same thing out here with javelina, and Ive not figured it out yet?
When I called and shot my lion, I had wanted a rug made, but there to, they stick in a snarling head, and thats not the way I remember my lion coming into the call:)

First choice would be a coyote X.
Second choice would be an old one.
Last would be rare pelt color.

I would also have to say the big old males are my definition of a coyote trophy. The next would be any coyote that took extra effort to kill or something about the experience that made it memorable.

I've thought about getting a coyote mounted but most likely never will. I have never understood the snarling look either. That seems to be the popular pose for most magazine covers and iron on patches. A nicely tanned pelt will do me fine. If forced to take one though, a full body mount on a skiff of fake snow, with a sharp alert look would suit me best.

Why not score them the way other predators are scored, by skull size?

Then they could break it down by regions, and an overall world record catagory.
For instance my brother Red just got his black bear in the B&C book for Washington State, which measured 18 14/16", because the state book only requires 18 1/2" (whereas the world book require 20").

I have a couple tanned. I chose them by a few different criteria.

Heavy furred.
Nice color.
Memorable hunt.
Just in the mood at the time to tan one.

But, they are all trophies. All challenging animals, to me anyway.

Sorry, had to throw that in. [Wink]

I like Krusty's idea. If we use the 19 (or is it 21?) sub-species, male and female, and have catagories for rifle, shotgun, pistol, bow, & roadkill, we should all be able to hold a 'World Record'.

I vote to put Gerald in charge of getting it started.

I don't know if Gerald will have time, seein's how I've got him nominated for President. He doesn't know that, yet, but I figure he will soon enough. [Big Grin]

I've got this skull from Nemesis, I've got one tanned (case skinned) that I got in Nebraska year before last hunting with Q, and the biggest one I got on my Colorado mountain coyote hunt this past November is at the tannery now and I plan to rug shell it. In the case of both the NE and CO hunts, I have pics made and framed of me holding each up in the place where I got it and they'll hang on the wall nearby to one another and to the pelts that resulted. I figure one of these days, I'll be either too old or crippled up to get out and hunt and I'll need visual aids for the hero stories I'll be telling at the nursing home for ol' hunters.

Kokopelli, good idea.
All trophy skulls should be judged and recorded by sub-species. There are presently 20 recognized subs since the recent inclusion of c. latrans var. and two others are being considered by taxonomists so provisions should be made for future inclusion, AND because intergradation occurs within 200 miles of area boundaries AND because there is as much variation WITHIN sub-species as there is BETWEEN sub-species, I propose that two committees be formed to review, judge and record the trophies. I nominate Krusty to chair the Advocate Committee, and smoke em to chair the Control Committee. [Smile] [Smile]

Guys,
Any coyote that I call in with my mouth call, drill a hole through his ribs and he falls dead is a trophy to me. My new digital camera helps preserve the memory of that event.

I agree with Leonard & Lonny on the open mouth look...a big male rugged with a closed mouth is my idea of a trophy.

Nobody but Rich can recognize a subspecies of coyote, and he won't even tell us which is which when asked directly, that's why I suggested it be broken down by regions.

I would use, for regional boundries, the climate zones from my gardening books. As climatology seems more closely related to overall average body size, than latitude.

At $20 for each entry into the books, I'd be more than glad to run the show (by MYSELF).

Speaking of worn teeth. I always look'em over, especially the muzzle & teeth. Of all the ones, I've killed. Only one was a "gumby".

I missed him balled-up @ 220yrds[I do have an excuse, [Big Grin] LOL!]. Shot echo'd over his head. He then loped quartering towards me, right into the 2nd rd [Big Grin] .

Guy's,
Smoke'em was just here for coffee the other day I think. He was with old Mert Bargainsquash or however he spells it. Mert and Smoke'em are both nice fellers. Mert is a coyote hunting freak, and I betcha that old Smoke'em is a good hunter also. Hang in there Smoke'em, we do sometimes speak serious coyote talk in here now and then. [Smile]

smoke em, don't leave. You, 2dogs and Cronk are the only ones here besides me that truly understand the evils of dog wagons. These Arizony boys just don't think they can have that much of an impact on the coyote psyche.
