2 days in the panhandle.

Saw 31, either called, bumped or just seen.

Shot at 14.

Killed 12.

You pampass assed knowitalls can fill in the blanks.

 -

In case you were curious, Q made me do all the calling and most of the time, I slouched and used the Bandit M-1 with a small 15W external speaker attached for "reach".

Loco, for you, I'll tell a little of the tale.

Of the twelve, four were singles, and the balance were four doubles. Overall, As I told Q, this was not unlike a K-State football game against his Huskers. The first quarter made us think we had a chance. We only had a little time Sunday afternoon to pull off a couple stands so we hit one tract of sandhills and started walking. Q dumped a mid-sized coyote with a noticeable white tipped tail. 1-0. About twenty minutes later, a coyote popped up about 70 yards to my left and I actually killed another with an HMR. Chest shot in the port side. Go figure. 1-1. I'd been duped into a false sense of confidence.

Next morning, we began the day scanning a few dead piles until we had good shooting light, then off to make some stands. Only after we started looping through some rolling hills bordering pivots did we set up atop a tall hill looking west with a nice little valley running right to our feet. Two coyotes approached from Q's side with one closing the gap while the other stayed at a fenceline in the distance to observe. Number one came to right below me as I called and I shot the poor bastard right in the mouth as it looked up the hillside toward me panting. The lower jaw was broken loose from its moorings but other than a lot of throat damage, no exits. I laughed and called it a reverse Texas heart shot. Moments after I shot, Q dumped the fencesitter at about 300 yards and we had our first fur for the day. Walking to the next stand, we intercepted a lone runner and Q got the drop on him at about eighty yards, give or take.

After a bit of a dry spell, we found ourselves in the breaks for the afternoon calling up some big cuts and canyons. At one such stand, we had a trio of coyotes come in with two out front and one lagging behind. Q was giving me the cross the throat sign to kill the caller and I was confused, because I could see the coyote, 400+ yards out on the other side of the valley. Little did I know that the original pair were at the base of the hill out of sight from me and charging the caller. I stopped, he woofed, he shot, SCORE!!! Number two cut hard to the right and appeared running like the devil up the canyon bottom left to right. I repositioned my bipod to the right, found him on the wires and shot him square in the ass at about 160 yards. He started spinning and Q and I both started shooting to anchor him better, with one of us connecting. That made our five kills for the day. All told, Huskers 4, Wildcats 3 as we went to the locker room for half time. And just like in the real game, we were only down by one and feeling like we could still make some corrections and make a comeback after the intermission. Don't count your coyotes before they're whacked.

Tuesday morning started just like the day before with us patrolling dead piles and feedlots in hopes of a gimme. We didn't find anything, so we crowded our way into a small pasture bordering the edge of town where Q had heard a pack light off the evening prior.

Shortly after beginning, Q spotted a pair north of us over a click away, and they, in turn, spotted the truck and bugged out. As we left, a mangy coyote ran out of some small trees next to the truck and we couldn't get a decent shot in the corn stubble. Q did hit him - square in the ass - but it wasn't a major hit. We went after him anyway and he gave us the slip. But, while we were looking, we spotted another coyote at way the hell out there across an open meadow of bright yellow grass, mousing his way along. Using a grove of cottonwoods and a berm of dirt,we managed to close the gap to about 600 yards where we were able to crawl out onto a small rise and get set up shooting prone. While Q ranged and ciphered the shot, I began calling softly to try and get the coyote's attention. It worked and after some coaxing, it committed and started coming in. When he hit the 360-yard marker, Q shot him in the ass and anchored him fairly well. At the shot, a second coyote appeared to Q's left and he spun to try a going away shot, whispering at me to start barking in hopes of getting it to check up for a moment at under 600. I was confused because I was all but certain that he'd seen the coyote 425 yards straight out in front of us, but apparently, he didn't - until I mentioned it. LOL He realligned on the better deal and I started calling. The coyote was lying on the hillside and it stood up, looking right at us. My rangefinder glitched and wouldn't gimme much better than " - - -", so Q took a WAG and made the shot. The first round went about two feet above the coyote's head and dusted the hillside well above and beyond him. The coyote didn't even flinch. I called out the overshot distance and he corrected before shooting again. Just as the gun barked, the coyote dropped its head to smell something and the hillside right behind his noggin exploded. THAT got his attention, and he turned to the right and began running. Q's next shot - all of these being right around 500 yards - hit him in the ass again, and we watched him slink off dragging his hindquarter. Taking the trail, we found good blood but no coyote, so we went back to town and got the dogs.

GPS's are wonderful tools. I'd waypointed the first coyote down as we chased the second, and then waypointed the last blood we found so we knew where to start the dogs. After getting back, Gizmo and Sweetie - Q's two JRT's - made quick work of the coyote and found him about 350 yards away laid up behind a dead cottonwood snag. After running him out, down, the baying him in an open pasture, we got him dead and headed back to the truck. Those dogs are a joy to watch at work.
Huskers - 6, Wildcats 3.

We pulled into a large area of sandhills and abandon the truck for a walkabout. At the first setup, we put the Bandit downwind about fifty yards to my left with Q about thirty yards to my right. About three minutes in, I heard Q start woofing, then he shot, followed by a thwack sound. Damn! He got another. Rat bastard Huskers 7, 'Cats - 3. I thought I could redeem myself a bit when another coyote came loping around the base of the hill in front of me and checked up at a couple hundred yards. I got it on the wires and was just taking up the Accu in my trigger when Q dumped him. Sonofabitch! God forsaken, swill drinkin', whoremongerin' Huskers - 8, 'Cats - 3. The game was getting out of control.

That coyote took a hard hit, but still managed to run uphill for nearly 70 yards despite the fact that he had a big hole where his sternum used to be. Taking a looky loo inside, he'd made that run a bit lighter since his heart, both lungs, diaphragm, stomach and all but about six feet of intestines were conspicuously absent, leaving behind the rest of its guts he'd been dragging behind him as he ran. Yowzers! Those coyoteees are tough!

We managed several more stands over hill and dell before making it back to within a day's walk of the truck when I managed to call one from right near the truck. Q killed it too, and was proud to proclaim that he'd done it "offhand". Like I cared at that point. I was down 9 to 3 and fixin' to show him my backhand. Screw his offhand. LOL

We only saw two more coyotes before calling it quits, and I missed one. Twice. Running. Really fast. Left to right, and a long ways out. Well, only about a hundred and fifty, but he was really running low to the ground. And, there was the wind. Not much, just a really bad gust just as I shot. Yeah, that was it. A bad gust.

BTW, did I say that I did all the calling?

Lance,
Sounds like a good trip.
I would like to see a pic of the JRT's.

And I got to ask - why carry a 17HMR on a coyote hunt?

I hope everyone has a great and safe Thanksgiving.

Good damned question, Kelly. Answer? no other option, other than a scattergun. It was NE's last day of deer season and if you don't have a deer tag, you cannot carry a centerfire. Limited to rimfires and shotguns. They afeared of all the poaching that would go on.

We did have a good hunt and I was pleased to see some good coyotes roming around. We did see a few that had mange pretty bad but the good ones were good. Some of the best quality coyotes I have seen in quite a few years.

These were the first I have killed in Nebraska this year. I had a little ring rust but we did pretty well. Looking forward to getting after them again in a week or so.

Good hunting.

Question; When you let your dogs 'interact' with the carcases, how much concern is there that they might pick up the mange micro-bobs??

Good looking beasts, even if they are 'yappy little bastards'. {grin}.

Q, that last pic would make a great Christmas card!!!!

K, you would think they would contract it, but it is rare to see a decoy dog that get's it. You would think it would be something we would be fighting all the time.????? Mine are around or on coyotes all summer and i have never seen it, they are not chewers though!

Q may have seen different.

You're right, Geordie. I was thoroughly impressed by their demeanor, both at home, and on the job. I have a rat terrier who is our third child and their personalities are so much alike. These are the guys I think about when I hear the phrase, "It isn't the size of the dog in the fight..."

I don’t want to get to far ahead of my self and say that Scott. I will say that I have seen considerably less mange this year than the previous two. If this trend continues we will be in pretty good shape but there is still plenty of mangy coyotes out there to keep it alive and well. I haven’t been out and about to get a real good feel for what we have and don’t have yet but I am optimistic.

Glad to see Hein register over here. He had been posting on PM a little bit. I warned him about all of you thugs but I think he would be a pretty good fit over here. LOL

Good hunting.

Q,

I ask because that looks to be some pretty good numbers of good quality coyotes for you to have too much mange.

Mange is still pretty wide spread in this area. It seems as one area starts recovering, another area bottoms out. Went to Martin recently to see what guys were seeing for mange and the coyote numbers are still down in lots of areas. For this 3 day contest, 9 - 12 is winning when 3 good weather days used to yield 20+ coyotes for the winners.

We still have a long ways to go before we see the kind of numbers we used to have here. 6 and 7 will win or place most 2 day contests and we used to be disappointed if we didn't shoot that many in 1 day. Things have really changed.

Nice pics especially those goofy little monsters.

Might be coming through your way again in a couple weeks on a scouting trip. Buy you a beer if you're up to it.

I don’t know what to think about the mange deal. I know you guys have had it a lot longer than we have and you have even had harder winters up there. My last real good season here in NE was the 2003/04 season. Coyotes were thick everywhere it seamed. We have always had a little Red Mange but I saw a little sarcoptic mange show up that season. I have saw more and more up until now. Last year I think Petska told me that he was down 40% on buying coyotes from his average. I am sure gas prices may have factored in on that number also but mange had an impact as well.

I don’t know enough about mange to understand why or how it would work its self out in only about 5 years? I am still seeing mange in all of the areas I hunt so I think this deal could go either way. It may take off again or it may continue to decrease? The conditions that make it happen either way are outside of my control so I guess I just won’t worry about it. LOL

If you come through let me know and we will get together.

Good hunting.
