Alright, fess up. We've all had them. Lotsa 'em. Anyone care to share what they like to do, strategy-wise, for making sure they get dead ASAP?

Do you prefer to shoot at them while they spin in one small spot, wait for them to either die anyway or at least slow down and maybe even stop to look around while they pant, or do you prefer to let them get their legs again and offer you a predictable going away shot as opposed to the all-hell-breaking-loose shot while spinning so they end up looking ,like (to quote Elbee) they got shot by a posse? (Can I use that phrase, LB?)

Normally I try to anticipate the spin and shoot into the center mass. But, this year, I tried something twice but won't guarantee that it will work most, let alone all the time. I.... CHARGED!

The first was a coyote that came right through the fence I was sitting alongside, from behind me. Once through the fence, he spotted me, looked back and downshifted. I shot him in the ass and rolled him at about 70 yards. He went down, jumped up and started spinning around. He already had a big hole in him and I didn't want more to sew, so I jumped up and ran right at him screaming like a mad man (Buy Mad Calls!) He actually stopped spinning, cowered down and glared at me like I was crazy. Ran right to him and popped a .22 cap in his head.

The second was a shotgun hit - two of them - that didn't keep him down. he was staggering off - I didn't have a rifle, and he was out of range for me. Again, I took off after him screaming and waving my free hand and he laid down and stared at me until I shot him with my pistol. The guy with me was laughing his ass off, but it worked.

I'm getting too old to run them down, so I better start hitting them better.

W/Mini-14......Center of mass & yank the trigger.

W/Shotgun......Put it on his nose & pull the trigger.

W/Contender Carbine (single shot)....Wait for a high percentage shot & squeeze the trigger.

.22 Derringer is on the hip and has proven useful more than once.

Missed sis, but multiple vortices being tracked by spotters on the ground. Gonna be a loooonnnggg evening. The TIV (Tornado Intercept Vehicle) from Discovery Channel was in the 'hood just the other day. You know your day's gonna suck when the TIV drives by. Project Vortex 2 from the Weather Channel is around here, too.

Thanks Cal. Wish we'd just gotten snow.

Good news? Storm is passing south of me.

Bad news? Softball-sized hail right through the heart of some of my best calling. Hope everyone's in the den.

Paul;
My Mini shoots about half minute of coyote off of the sticks at 100 all day long. Most of my calling is to the shotgun. Rifle shots are usually somewhere between 75 & 125 yards. At that distance the Mini is a coyote killing machine. Out past that, not so good. If I have to pass up a long shot, it's no big thing. With the current state of the fur market I may be using a wheel gun this fall.

All joking aside, if you want coyotes to not take a step 99% of the time go for the mid to high shoulder. Quit shooting them in the ribs. It takes a better bullet to smash through there, but most of the time it's instant lights out. I personally like stuffing the near side shoulder through the far side shoulder. Seems to stop the spinning.

Well, I know this wont be popular on this board. However, if I have one of my dogs with me, they love spinners. Especially Tagger. He perfers I make bad shots so he can kill their ass.

However, if I dont have a dog along, I just let em spin til they stop. If they are dead, then I dont do anything. If they are still standing, I put another one in them in the boiler room and they keel over, most of the time, unless I make another bad shot.

But hey, you guys kill way more than I do, so what the fuck am I doing offering advice.

TA, tell em bud. I bet you get more spinners than the whole board put together if you are honest. Shooting 600 yards regularly with a 17, your gonna get spinners if you even hit anything.

If I have a spinner on my hands, I'm trying to get another bullet in the critter as quick as possible. I have no qualms about hitting a spinner in the ass with a second shot.

Cal, brings up the point of using a bullet built for busting shoulders... I can't count the number of times the I've heard the PM crowd say, "XX bullets work great, just stay off the shoulder!" If I have to wait for broadside behind the shoulder shots, because of the bullet I'm using, it's time to look for a bullet built for the task.

Andy; I only had one spinner last season and a few dead runners. Like i said i just let them bleed out and then go pick them up..
I have'nt shot any coyotes at 600 yds with the 17 Pred. yet but maybe next season I will. Then again I have the 20x47 L for those shots.. [Big Grin]

Which one do you take the long shots with? You told me once it was just that damn easy to make those long shots. I remember one thread where everyone was holding their sides while you were telling of taking some kind of 600 yard runnin shot and it took a few if I remember. Anyway, leanin on a fencepost. You used to brag on them all the time. You gonna tell me you never had a spinner?

As for last season, either you arent telling the exact truth about how many spinners you had, or, your pullin a Rob Krause with your pictures and numbers.

Shootin the small calibers taking the long shots, you got spinners.

regarding Cal's advice:

In context, people! I was making an observation, using (what's it called?) oh; "sarcasm"! 40 grain bulets are useful for ground squirrels, not so much for busting coyotes on the shoulder.

With the cartridges I generally use, I can kill a coyote shot through the hips. They might raise their head a bit, but they don't move and for sure, bleed out right away.

I know what you're thinking. Yes, the situation occurs on running shots, once in a while.

Good hunting. LB

edit: (running shot, some damage)

Lonny, I agree 100 percent. Thats why I switched from the AMax to the Sierra 1365. Just shoot em. Still easy on fur.

I still havent found the perfect 204 bullet. I love the gun. Not satisfied with results, totally. Not that it wont kill, but for the reasons listed above.

Im sorry LB, I forgot the laws of physics cease to exist in MN and SD. And if TA says its legal, then it is legal.

So much to learn about MN and SD physics and laws of Tim Anderson. I wish they would have taught this shit in college!\

Damn LB, you blowed the fuck out of that one! You been huntin with DanS? Thats the way most of his coyotes look!

Yeah, sorry about the gore. [Razz] Hit "a bit" far back with a 55VMax but he was DRT. Everybody says that more gun doesn't make up for poor shooting skills. There's a friggin' yes and no answer to the question, if you ask me.

Good hunting. LB

PS, as I recall, DanS was at one campout and skinned a cat that was a bit messed up. I wondered why? Why it was messed up and why he bothered with it.
