For the month of September, what sounds do you like to use? I know the pups are dispersing, so would I be better off with only distress sounds, or should I mix some howls in there?

How about using pup distress during this time?

I will be hunting primarily at night, in hardwoods, if that makes a difference.

I don't claim to be "an expert" but, like most peeps, I have an opinion.

It doesn't hurt to use a few howls anywhere, any time. Some, that's all they use, but I like distress.

I wouldn't overdue the coyote pup distress, save it for the proper time. But I like the hell out of gray fox pup distress, I could use it all day...or night and it usually brings them in.

Let's see who else has an opinion?

Good hunting. LB

Well I'm no expert that's why I didn't respond,but what the hell.lol

But where I hunt out west, early on I don't do much howling, and if I do it's with a higher pitched howler(younger coyote)and I call for no more than 15 minutes at each stand.Lots of YoY that might be hesitant in coming in if they hear a lower pitched howl(older coyote).

So for the first couple months I mostly use distress sounds. As the season progresses I start using more howls and staying at my stand alittle longer 20-25 minutes maybe.

Good Hunting Chad

Yeah, well. At the campout, you better sleep with a gun, or we may resort to Okie waterboarding. I believe it's done with a funnel and beer?

Andy, I tried that before and it didn't work.

UTcaller I like the title.

Appreciate the responses. I wouldn't mind hearing some more if anyone is so inclined.

49er,

Distress, distress, distress.

Dispersed pups and vocalizations don't mix.

Family units still together, vocalizations work fine for the most part.

Area with high populations vocalizations work usually.

Cold calling use distress.

Rarely use any vocalizations after Oct. to Mar. timeframe unless I have to.

49er ever have trouble with the echo in those woods and coyotes becoming confused as to where the sound source is? Seen it a couple times, coyote kind of goes in a circle for awhile before he figures it out.

Andy you were suppose to twist this into a FP post some how. Your never going to achieve Pro Staff status if you don't shape up.

Andy;
Observe & learn. [Cool]

Since I don't start using my Weems WildCall or my Weems Dual-Tone until mid Oct. when the fur starts to prime up (they're just too effective to be sporting this time of year) I would recommend calling to urban coyotes with a Stewart 512 using a ZZ Top Eliminator cassette.

Seriously, unless there's a damage issue involved, do you want to hunt Yogi or Boo-Boo????

"cheesy Boddicker calls..."

I'd be careful where you step there, Andy. They still call more coyotes than many if not most calls out there. (Not everyone needs a remote control to call coyotes, LOL) Some of the best in the country have them hanging around their necks and it ain't just for looks. Just saying...

In September it's too hot to carry a danged fox pro caller, Unless I'm on my 4 wheeler, got a stand on it to peek over the high weeds and keep me out of the chiggers.
I just grab a couple of hand calls (Krusty Krier for sure) and try distress.
Problem is if I just have this feeling that something is there and I just can't see it, I will make a few pup squeals. More times than not they come a runnin.

I never howl that early but I sure ain't no expert.

I try to save the secret sound till after deer season but it has worked year round.

Andy,
Rest assured, those of us on the Weems Pro Staff will spend time evaluating the competition's products in order to continue to perfect our own fine line of Weems calls. It' a call eat call world out there. [Big Grin]

I like that picture of Koko.

Randy, come to mention I have seen this happen when calling during the day. I didn't realize what it was. I believe this has happened to me when night calling as well. How do you handle the echo problem?

Tom I will keep the pup squeals in mind.

You must ask yourself; is this a man I would trust to water my lawn when I'm on vacation?

Obviously not!

September; a mans thoughts turn to feathers and scatterguns....it's dove season man, damned the bat-earred, hairless ole coyotes!
I dearly love dove hunting, one of the most enjoyable endeavors the hunting field has to offer. Fast flying birds, light, wispy handling shotguns, no camo, no hiding, no silence...just laughing, shooting and slaying some birds. It just doesn't get any better on a cool sept morning; damned coyotes still have another month before you should be getting after them.

Here's the thing;
With only the few exceptions of the guy's here that are actually A.D.C. the majority of us are recreational callers. We can yadda yadda all we want about 'doing control work' and 'helping the fawn crop' but the fact remains we mainly do this stuff for fun.

Sooooooooo; If you're not having fun........you ain't doing it right!!!!! [Big Grin]

49er, Lip squeak or real soft on a hand call. Just enough to get to em but minimize the echo.

I get humbled from time to time by coyotes, just enough to realize I don't know everything.

Everybody can learn something, and sometimes it comes from the damdest sources!!!!!

Makes a guy smack his head and wonder why he didn't think of that!!
