My bro and I went out this afternoon and made 2 stands. On the first one, I was watching straight ahead and my bro was off to my right, covering the right flank and downwind leg. Less than 5 minutes into the call, I happen to look to my right and here's this coyote coming hard. I brought the T/C up but my scope caps were still snapped shut. Shit! He did a quick loop around my FX3 then hauled butt back east, right past my bro...again. He missed him twice, and I shot over him just before he hit the treeline. He was muttering something on the way home about selling a Colt Python he has so he can buy a dedicated coyote rifle. He shoots right-handed, so he has tons more options than I do. I told him a Remington Model 7 Predator in .17 Fireball would be perfect with a nice little 2-7 scope on it. He wants to go back out on Wednesday or Thursday. I was kicking around today whether a Marlin 338 would be nice or a Savage in .204 Ruger. I was leaning 338 this morning...leaning the other way now. Life is full of interesting fun things! ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

It happens, you think it through before you set up and then one comes bouncing in from the exact place you hoped they wouldn't come from! Was good to be out though, wasn't it? I needed to go badly this weekend to get away from work and clear my head with some fresh air, but it just wouldn't work out this weekend.

I agree with Tim. Surprise? But what is a Marlin 338? I hope that's a model number and not the cartridge it's chambered for? I can't get all enthusiastic about a lever action, if that's what you mean? The only lever gun that can handle modern cartridge pressures, that I know of is the Savage 99, which is an excellent choice for a lefty.

My guess is he's referring to a "338 Marlin Express"... similar to a .308Win but for lever actions. Popular for deer and hogs.

I'm sure he is speaking of the .308 and .338 Marlin Express cartridges. Both very worthy and add a new dimension to the age old Marlin design. Leonard the Savage M99, Winchester M1895 and M88, Sako Finwolf, and Browning BLR all handle modern cartridge designs and spitzer bullets just fine.

I guess I'm not up on lever stuff like I should be. Particularly the Winchester M88, don't know how I forgot that one?

Yeah, it was a good time. My bro was hesitant, since we had gusts to 21 mph, but I said screw it, let's go.
I have no lack of Marlin levers, 1 in 44 mag, 2 in .45-70, and a 444, so I guess I could pass on a 338 Marlin for now. I'd like one, but I don't 'need' one. But a Savage in .204, now that would be the bomb diggity!
Trying to nudge my bro toward a .17 Fireball or .204, but dunno if it will fly. He already loads .223, to he may likely go that direction.
We shall see.

I own a Marlin, Model 1886? I think it is, chambered in 44-40, made in 1913. I have never fired it, but it was an MGM prop gun, supposedly used by the Duke himself, but that would be extremely hard to verify.
No offense, but these things make good wall hangers. I got in serious trouble years ago on the Handloaders Forum for expressing similar views about 30/30's. Cripes, you would think I was smearing somebody's mother's reputation!

I like the lever guns always have. I dont have a lot of shooting time with them for hunting .
I would go with the 17 or 204 low recoil and accurate.

I don't mind the lever guns too much.
Fun to shoot for a change.
Only problem I have with them is that they tend to rap my knuckles.
I have an old Win94 Trapper and a Marlin 450.
The Marlin is suprisingly accurate but you sure don't want to lean in too far to the scope.

That is why I put a ghost ring peep on my .45-70. I cooked up a load putting a Remmie 405 gr. JFP out at about 1930 f.p.s. It's really too fast for that bullet, but would be good for a Kodiak or some such other bullet with a heavier jacket. It's definitely a T-Rex load, and is the only thing I have that thumps me as bad as my old Mossberg 835 3 1/2' 12 gauge used to. Other, mere mortal loads aren't as bad. I tend to favor the Hornady 350 JFP, although the Speer 300 gr. Uni-Cor is getting good reviews.

I have several levers right now, old pre-64 M94 .30 WCF Winchester with Redfield aperture sight, Marlin M1894 .44 Mag, M336C .30-30, M1895 .45-70, and an older Browning BLR 81 .308 Winchester. The Marlins all have aperture sights, the Browning is wearing a Leupold scope. Del, I shoot that Remington 405 gr. at 1,861 fps from my 1972 M1895 Marlin. I call that my "hammer" because that is the result of game when that big flatpoint smacks it on the shoulder - hammered!
