Would like to train house dog to be afraid of rattlesnakes if I take him hunting. Is there anything I can do? I would not like to tell my granddaughter that her dog is buried somewhere in the desert.

Only rattlesnakes, or snakes in general? A shock collar and a few (aggressive) bull or gopher snakes is what is generally used.

Depending on the type of dog, I dont know if its possible. JRTs, Airedales and other terriers seem to want to kill snakes. And are good at it. It only takes once though...
When I had bird dogs, they wouldnt mess with them and I dont remember our heelers messin with them. But, I dont know if you could ever break an aggressive dog off snake killin or not?

Our local shotgun range holds a "de-snaking clinic" once per year, usually in August before dove season starts. I think they charge $10 or $20 per dog? Their procedure is to place two rattlesnakes in the pasture; their mouths have been sewed shut. They put a shock collar and a long rope leash on your dog. One man guides your dog to the area of the snakes. If the dog shows interest in it, another man shocks the pi$$ out of your dog. Once did the trick on my lab. I don't know how common these "clinics" are though in other areas.

Joel, the same service is sold here in Az. and in the regulation booklet AZF&G suggests that sporting dog owners have this done. The rattlers that are used have been defanged.
In MO. my Collie ,who was a house dog,was bitten by copperheads three different times. Mattie, who spent most of her time down in the hollows with the moccasins and copperheads, was never bitten.
Mattie is an aggressive dog and we've run into rattlers a few times while she was with us. She gave the snakes their due respect. I'm not worried about her.

My bird dog has been bit and I had a collie when I was younger that was bit 3-4 times by copper heads, all right here around the house. The collie had been bit on the nose two times, it finally turned black and all the hair fell out on her nose. It looked nasy but the vet said it wouldnt hurt her, she lives for a long time after that, but boy it sure made her sick!
I have a JRT and he is hell on wheels with snakes, if there is one around he will find it and kill it! If you pull him off he will have a fit! Same with Mice, Rats, Coons, Frogs and HATES cats! If a cat commes around it has a death wish for sure. And he will take on any dog no matter the size.
The thing that really suprised me was we got a long hair weiner dog that had been miss treated when we got her. After I won her over, she is the same way, a killen machine! I dont know how many snakes these dogs have killed this year around the house. And they are just like a cat, they haft to lay it right on the porch for all to see and will bark till you come look...lol
They seem to be very good at killing them, so far niether have been bit, im sure some day one of them will get it though. But with kids, I am glad they are like that! Makes me feel better when they are in the yard playing with the kids!
