That hurt my throat just listening to it. [Eek!] Sounds pretty good, though!!

Question; Do you feel that the voice howl is more effective than using a howler or is it just a matter of convinence??

Convenience? It's Scott's entire repartee. But hush. It's sorta confidential.

Good hunting. LB

Nikonut,

Voice howls (not recording of same) will beat recordings of live coyote howls much of the time. I ain't that good yet, but still practicing. The above howl was done in the inhale mode. I got the inhale idea from Hunsley. My neighbors love me dearly.

Rich,

I don't know why that wouldn't work... it has the inflection and high pitch. You would have to do a voice print to compare to see the differences and similarities, my old ears can't pick them all out. I know the native ******* used voice howls and sounds of all kinds to attract game. To me it would seem closer to real being that it's not made with a mechanical device!

Still sounds like you crushed your nuggies in the car door!!! [Eek!] [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Razz]

Thanks Niko, thats a mental picture I could've done without.

Rich, are you saying you made that howl while inhaling? I just tried that and I'm fairly sure I'm gonna need medical attention.

JD,
Yes, you understood correctly. I had quite a time getting used to that method, but I am a stubborn old cuss. Here is another one that I recorded just now. Hot off the press.

What, no way, are you just screwin with me? I can make a decent voice howl but it just seems impossible to howl while inhaling..... although I did know this girl once.....

Voice calling fascinates me, and as said, it is always convenient. I have two friends who do their elk sounds by voice alone, and one of them does bull elk bugles by inhaling.

The other young man does many kinds of calls with his voice, coyote howls included, and he is good. My successful voice calling includes lynx (not sure what I'm saying in lynx language but they vocalize back to me on the way in), coyote, grey fox, black bear, mule deer bucks and does, moose of both sexes with different sounds, turkeys, barred owls and blue grouse.

My tries on coyote howls are pathetic however thus far. It takes practice, so pity Rich's neighbors. [Wink]

As Rich mentioned you need to hear Jerry Hunsley's voice howls. He inhales to make the howling sounds and his coyote vocalizations are fantastic. I'm out of practice with my voice howling, but did use it in combination with howls from my open reed calls when I was actively calling years back. I have always exhaled to make the howls. I can also make the howls by inhaling, but I feel more comfortable exhaling when I howl and bark, etc.

I'll be dammed! Reading this crap, I was positive that howling while inhaling would be impossible. Then I just tried it and surprised myself. Not half bad, got my cat's attention.

Good hunting. LB

My try at an inhale howl sounds more like one's final stage after life support has been pulled.

I think I hurt myself too.

I should have warned you guys that howling while inhaling can be less than easy on the throat at first. I am trying to train my vocal chords to find even a higher pitch. I also want to master the rising pitch howl, and the bark/howl (challenge). This is only one more challenging art for me.

I can do a fairly good voice howl. If I can remember the name of the site that hosts sounds for free I'll post it. Not to steal Mr. Cronk's limelight, just to show that even a goon like myself can do it [Smile]

Rich, you better be careful with this stuff. You already have that poor dog next door half crazy.

The dogs around here love to bark at new sounds I create. My neighbors HATE me. Here is a howl that I tinkered with in my Gold Wave program, and may prove interesting to the coyotes. I am going to load it in my CS24.

Rich,Echo VoiceHwlRC.wav is a nice sound, and I like the over all theme of the howl.Rich how many tracks or in that sound I mean it sounds like more than one to me.Does gold wave let you pan sounds? Rich it's not my goal to trash your sound like I say I like it.Over all it's a good one how ever the re verb is a little over the top for me.But for all I know you might want the re verb in there for your area. The program that I run right now does not multitrack but I learned to get a result some what like you have achieved. With just a single track and alot of trail and era. For me re verb is a quick way for me to trash a good sound.
Rich I always take a listen to the sounds that you share to see what I can gleam from them. Over all you make some good prey distress sounds, and coyote vocals.
Right now I,m trying out a program called Samplitude for 30 days, and I think I will go a head and buy it. There will be a huge learning curve for me,but I do have a bit of a feel for it already.I run Magix Cleaning Lab so knowing my way around Cleaning Lab helps.I have been wanting to trade up to a new program for a few years now but have been a bit to lazy to learn a new one.

Cayotaytalker,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and for the kind words regarding my sounds. I lost my Cool Edit PRO when I bought this new computer, and just learning how to use a couple of new programs. The original voice howl in question was recorded in stereo. I opened the sound in Gold Wave and chose their default echo. I like the sound, and am hoping that the coyotes like it also.

Man, coyote calling is sure getting technical.

Posted by Rich (Member # 112) on March 25, 2011, 08:47 AM:

tawnoper,

It is with some of us. I see many posts on other boards where guys are using howls improperly. To guys like me, howling is an art that stands alone. A whole different method of calling coyotes. I am always searching for something better. I admit to being a perfectionist, and a real nit picker regarding coyote calling. I know that I should be keeping my new sounds secret too, but helping other callers is also something I like to do.
Good hunting,
Rich

Mr. Cronk, I can send you another copy of Cool Edit if ya want.

Posted by Rich (Member # 112) on March 25, 2011, 06:08 PM:

Smithers,

Yes, we could try that but I don't know if the disk will work in this computer. The original disk you sent me wouldn't work.
Thanks,
Rich

Do you have a Mac? Windows 7 or Vista? My brother has Windows 7 and loaded it on his comp, same disk. I'll see if he has a work around for it or something. Then I can email ya the instructions. Cool Edit is probably way better than Gold Wave. [Smile]

Posted by Rich (Member # 112) on March 26, 2011, 05:56 AM:

Smithers,

Cool Edit is the best, and also very expensive. It could be that this computer is like some of the DVD players in that it can only read certain types of disks. If you find a disk for Cool Edit that works on my present computer, I will build you a very nice Flagship howler. Even if it DON'T work, I will always remember that you tried. I don't have very many good friends like you, but once I find one I don't forget em. Take Leonard for instance--A real Pin Head at times, but I betcha that if I show up at his house, he will invite me in with a smile. Don't tell him I said that because I don't want his head to swell or anything. EDIT to add that my computer is a Dell and runs windows XP Pro. I ain't smart enough to run a MAC. [Wink]

I justspoke with my brother and he loaded it onto Windows Vista with no problem. Maybe a different computer brand. I have a Dell with XP Pro on it at work. I'll try and load it Monday and let ya know.

It could be Rich's new computer is 64 bit and if the Cool Edit is 32 bit, it probably won't install. When I switched over to my new computer, which is a 64 bit set up, lots of my old software wouldn't work on it.

The real secret to getting a waver in your voice when you howl on the inhale. is to start low and go high. Like saying hello. Is an example. Inhale an say huuurllooo. Like.

JD,
Yes, you have my permission sir. That howl will work wherever there are coyotes to hear it, but is especially effective in Minnesota.

I do believe that I finally got the disk to work. I had to open the disk in different manner, but the program seems to be working now. [Wink]

I know that Rich has gone on about how much he likes cool Edit for a few years now. But Smithers is Cool Edit what you run as well?
I my self can only do one voice howl and I call it a locator howl. It;s just a long drawn out howl. I never use it or make it in the field,But it is on my e-caller.
Are there some tricks as to how to voice howl? I mean do you try and form a word or anything like that.
I can make what I like to think are some good howls with a turkey diaphragm. And I also get some good rabbit sounds as well with a diaphragm.
Some of the sounds I make with a turkey diaphragm I could never explain how I get the sound in a million years. But like one turkey sound I say the word chick, chick, chick. So are there any other guys out there that use a diaphragm for calling? So far as I can tell just about any brand works.Yet I guess some or better than others.I have had good luck with the Red Head brand from Bass Pro Shop and one from Dutch Boy I think it's called the Mini Mag It's the little green or chartreuse one,it has a nice pitch.
Rich, or you happy with the pitch of your howls? I mean do you feel that you have the pitch just about right? I my self like a higher pitch howl, but I do have to say I might not be the smartest kid on the block when it comes to howls.

Posted by Rich (Member # 112) on April 17, 2011, 04:36 PM:

My voice howls will call coyotes, but I would still like to train my vocal chords to reach higher pitches. Friendly sounding howls can be done with the pitches I use now though. It is the inflection of the howls that are most important. I love to use my own sounds on my Foxpro callers because of the challenge. I now have three sound auditing programs to help me.

Yep, I have a CS24 and I love it. Speaking of old tapes, I have a bunch of those around here. Now all I gotta do is dig out a tape player. There is one Johnny Stewart young cottontail tape that I want to convert to digital and get it on my CS24.

Rich,I don't know what size of a town you live in but a good tape deck can be found at good will stores and at yard sales.I have eleven bucks tied up in my two decks.
And I just got my hands on some monitors for free from the U-haul storage site. where I have some of our crap in storage. This U-haul site has a spot where you can give some of your old stuff away to some one else that might could use it.I walked in one day and found the monitors needless to say I was on them like a duck on a june bug.

Rich,I miss read what you wrote about a tape player. You only need to get it out, never mind what I wrote about finding tape decks.
I gave a real nice collection of johnny Stewart tapes. To my brother's grandson.I bought some of those four packs they used to sale.I must of gave that kid about 120 dollars worth of tapes.I had the fox set,one for all predators, coons, and some coyote howls.I need to phone home and borrow those tapes back to record them for my on personal use.
