My wife and I sent the following letter to our Congressman and Senators this morning. It's challenging to cover all the many diverse concerns with today's federal government, all the while trying to keep the letter short and to the point, but this is what we sent. I encourage each of you to do the same, in your own way.

All my people are Republicans and have voted with my conscience from day one, but I still think the seriousness of the times demands that they redouble their efforts to work with and attempt to bring liberals such as the blue dog democrats to our conservative way of thinking. Maybe it's because I'm older and more engaged, but I can't recall there ever being a time in our history where the Consitituion was more under attack than it is now.
_______________

Dear _______,

It distresses me greatly that we would ever have to pose to you the following question, but the times dictate that this simple question be answered.
What are you doing to safeguard and defend the Constitution of the United States?
As a tax paying citizen, we’ve stood by quietly and watched the Obama administration pass legislation to bail out failing banking institutions rather than letting them collapse under their own weight. We understand the ramifications of allowing them to fail, but how can Congress and the Senate, in good conscience, pass this legislation while, at the same time, allowing those who made the decisions that contributed to, if not caused the problem to exist in the first place continue to function within their positions without facing prosecution?
How can you and your fellow Senators and Representatives allow this President, and the government - not OUR government because what you people have allowed yourselves to become is no longer the government of the people - to take control of private industry, terminate the positions of CEO’s, and infuse hard-earned taxpayer dollars into failing companies rather than simply letting those companies react to market forces. Such authority is not granted in the Constitution, and rather than letting things run their course, thus exposing the corrupt whose decisions led us down this road, tax money has been given to those who made bad decisions to begin with - those who caused this problem - with the irrational expectation that they’ll make wiser decisions with OUR money than they did with their own.
Most recently, you and your contemporaries approved the Cash for Clunkers program. Some of us aren’t fooled for one minute. A half-million Americans - for whatever reason - now find themselves in debt even deeper during one of this nation’s deepest economic recessions - having given up a paid-for older car because the government is offering them up to $4500 on a new car, all in the name of stimulating the economy and auto sales.
Let’s be truthful. Wasn’t this program more about selling cars and increasing sales tax revenues from those sales, all the while luring unsuspecting Americans into an income tax obligation for that $4500 benefit offered by the federal government? After all, $4500 generates a lot of tax when viewed as income, and the federal government never gives us anything for free. How about the increased tax revenues from the property taxes generated by those new cars compared to the cars traded in?
We don’t mind paying our fair share, but the least you people could do is be honest and forthright enough to call new taxes by their true name rather than conceal them in incentive programs that dupe and mislead.
Let’s talk for a moment about healthcare.
I’m a working man. My employer provides me with a good healthcare package that suits us well. I earn that benefit every day, I’m satisfied with what it gives me, and I don’t care one bit to have you and the rest of the federal government meddling around in my personal business.
I especially don’t like the thought that you will be able to tell me if my condition warrants spending the money to help me based upon your regard for my value as an asset to the system, or that in the instance of a bill I might not be able to pay, you would arrogantly assume the authority to access my personal financial assets, take my money from me and pay those expenses without my consent.
Admittedly, there are specific facets of healthcare in this country today - especially for those with serious pre-existing medical conditions or who have no means by which to pay for their own insurance plan - that are problematic and which desperately need our attention as a society. Refusing medical benefits to someone with a serious pre-existing condition comes to mind. But, we do not see the need for the sweeping and intrusive changes proposed under the Democrats many variants of the Obama healthcare plan. Let us address the individual problems themselves rather than throwing out the entire American healthcare structure. It’s really no more difficult than that.
Finally, we must address what is a truly frightening trend in this administration: Czars.
To those of us here in voting American, allow us to explain to you what appointing Czars appears to be. To us, Obama’s generous increase in the numbers of Czars appears to be a fail-safe backup plan to protect his ability to create and pass new policies pursuant to his ideological agenda should the Democratic party fail to retain control of the House and Senate in the 2010 elections. It’s obvious that they are aware that their ideas and policies are meeting with disfavor and that the American people are stepping up and demanding that someone put on the brakes. And, it’s becoming obvious that this disfavor for Obama’s plans will deter him from implementing them anyway. So, from where we stand, it appears that the best way to continue unabated - even after an election upheaval - is to place people you can trust into policy making positions that are created beyond the purview of Senatorial approval, Congressional oversight, and ultimately, Constitutional compliance. In our humble opinions, this defines the concept of Czars.
As your constituents, and as Americans who love and are willing to defend this country and our Constitution at any cost, we demand that something be done now, not later, to circumvent this ideology. We demand that legislation be introduced immediately to outlaw the establishment of Czars whose authority extends beyond that of a simple advisor and that Czars no longer be allowed to establish policies or implement regulation and programs within our federal government that are not first thoroughly vetted and approved by either the House of Representatives or the Senate as outlined in our Constitution. To allow Czars any authority beyond this is a willful, deliberate and treasonous attempt to circumvent the intent of the Constitution of the United States and should be dealt with accordingly.
Having said all this, and having explained only a few of our many concerns to you, I once again ask you a simple question:

What are you doing to safeguard and defend the Constitution?

Respectfully submitted,

Well written, but long. I kind of doubt that the elected official's aide that opens his / her mail will have the attention span to completely read it thru.

Gotta do something though............ it's getting bad, and gonna get worse.
