Did Bill Austin ever write any articles or books about calling. And if he did how would a guy get ahold of them. And for that matter are there any good calling books out there that were written by some pioneers of the sport and how would a guy get ahold of them as well? Thanks,

Bill wrote many articles on calling for magazines like Fur Fish & Game,The Trapper,Varmint Hunter,Wildlife Control Technology..he also made two video's with Lavern Howey doin the camera work...he also made a five audio cassette tape callin course.

There are a number of 'How to' books on the market. To be honest, they're all pretty much the same.
However, if you want something by a pioneer, try to find 'Varmint Hunter's Digest' by Jim Dougherty. It's long out of print, but still an excellent read.
You might be able to find a copy on EBay.

I have the five tape collection by Bill. The course is seven hours long. It was done on a poor quality recorder. With Bill reading from a script. It is true torture to listen to. but full of information.
I have had it for twenty years. Think I got them from Fur-Fish, and game.
Of all the videos out there. If I had to recommend just one. It would be "Calling the elusive Coyote". By Vern Howey. This is not a "Bang flop". Nor is it it a "You gotta by this call from me".Not a e-caller in it. It is pure meat and potatoes of how to call up a Coyote.

I would have to disagree that they are "all the same". People are all different, have different ideas and styles. Austin was one of the first to take the information that some of the old time professionals had and had kept to themselves, and make it public. Especially howling and howling techniques. At the time that he came out with his stuff, there was nothing else out there even close. Of course now you can buy a howler at any Wal-Mart, but 20 years ago Austins stuff was about it. I think his impact on the way things are now is pretty under rated.

Cal, No disrespect meant to Bill Austin. He was a pioneer in the field of howling and had a unique style of writing.
Also Gerry Blair & Major Boddicker are a couple of my favorites.
My point was that after a while, it seems as though the same basic information is covered over & over.
Russell Tinsley's 'The Critters Come When Called'; Ray Weaver's 'Predator Caller's Manual'; and Jim Dougherty's classic 'Varmint Hunter's Digest' all laid down the groundwork 30 plus years ago. The books that I see on the market today all seem to cover the same thing and follow the same format.
I buy them anyway, 'cause I'm a coyote hunter and can't help it.

Agree with you on Verne's video Ronnie. Nothing fancy, just rock solid information and advice. I happened to be there when Verne and Mr. Montgomery opened up the first batch of them and was the first person to buy a copy.

Well thanks for all the replies. I appreciate it and will do my best to try and find some of Bill's old writing's and hopefully his video. The Jim Dougherty book also sounds interesting, I'll try ebay for it but if anyone knows where's there might be an extra copy please let me know.

Bearmanric; Did you ever get the FoxPro that you were going to?? If not, the SportsMans Warehouse in Silverdale carries the 416 and the matching adapter to load sounds off your own tapes. It's a great unit & you can still make use of favorite tapes. It's also simple to do....no computer wiz, me, but I can reprogram on the tailgate between stands if I want to. Toughest choice is deciding which Foxpro sounds to keep & which taped sounds to add.

yes i have a foxpro now.going to bear camp in two weeks. going to use it and my call's.will be using the blacktailed doe distress, blacktail fawn distress and bear cub.i guess there building spotsman warehouse by federal way cant wait.Rick

I want to mention something here that may be helpful..This has nothing to do with articals or books on,Bill Austin.
We all know ,Bill made calls and i wanted to be helpfull to anyone that owns his Howler and has had reed trouble.
I know guys who had trouble with the black reed that came on the call.for some reason it has a tendency to crack very easy and some does not like the stiff brown reed.
Well i can tell you a cure for the reed problem,if' you can get the reed material..I use 14 mil. mylar...I have tryed other reed material and this seems to work best.
If you own the,Austin howler,cut the mylar the same as the black or brown reed,but cut it long enough to go to the very edge of the mouth peice"completely cover the mouth peice"..Place the'O'rings,-one up front,against the body of the call and one 3/8 to 1/2 inch,back from that one..I hope this has been helpful,(it really works very good for me)Good luck ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

Say what you want about Bill.
I took instruction from him in either 75 or 76. You havent lived untill you went with him over hill and dale on foot following a few coyotes! He was ahead of his time as far as coyote vocalization goes. I still have one of his prototype calls that he gave me. Believe me, the ones made today are ten times esier to blow than this one was! He was one of a kind for sure.
