Gary,

90% of my stands are made with a JS 512 and a rabbit tape. Nothing fancy, but it works.

I normally have a couple of Sceercy handcalls around my neck, and an open reed call made by Fred Cronk in my shirt pocket. The best sounding howler I've ever owned is a cow horn howler made by Rich Cronk. But I rarely howl when calling. I mostly use it just for locating.

I bought the Sceercy calls just because I liked the rubber coating, thinking they'd be a lot quieter while walking into the stand. Didn't take me long to fall in love with the sound they produce. I use the coaxer to make a little fluttering bird sound that has convinced a lot of coyotes to take one last peek around a bush. [Big Grin]

Gary,

I start the year with my own Predatr Calls, closed reeds, as well as use K-Kalls and Sceery AP-6's. I also mix and match with my Higgins Howler. If it's windy, Ill berak out the Rhino for its volume. When the weather gets butt-bitin' cold, I switch over to the open reeds, i.e., CrittrCall and Sceery AP-7. Don't use anything that needs a battery because I'm too much of a traditionalist.

My best luck this week has been with the new "Karma" series calls from PREDATR. While simply having the thing around my neck, I've brought in three coyotes and a big tom bobcat and haven't even had to blow a single note. Just knowing the call was in the field was enough to bring critters a-runnin'. [Smile] I'm gonna try letting it dangle from the lanyard next and see if it will point the way to the next good hiding place, kinda like a dousing rod for water. [Smile] If it works, me and the boys at the massive new Predatr manufacturing complex will rename it the Predatr Karma Dousing series.

Most of my stands are made with the JS 612 and either a cottontail or jackrabbit tape. Recently I have been trying some deer distress tapes.

I always have a crit'r call peewee on my neck. I have the sceery calls in my pocket as well. I have a masterblaster and tweety call in the pocket as well.

As for a howler, I have the Cowhorn howler from Rich Cronk.

Looking to purchase a howler from Mr. Higgins and a Rhino from Mr. Jay.

While I never seem to use them all in a day, I don't belive you can have too much variety to choose from.

I'm like you, Norm.

I have a number of calls to choose from, and I actually use most of them. I normally have two or three in my shirt pocket, because I can't stand a lanyard. But, I probably use a diaphram call more than any other, particularly on day stands, one, because it's hands free, for shooting, and two; because you can get some pretty good sound out of one without any hand movement. Think cats.

I also am lucky enough to own a Higgins Howler, and a couple of Rhino calls; the "Brass Rhino" being one that I like very much.

Don't worry, Krusty, I will call and kill something with your call, very soon.

Good hunting. LB

I begin every stand with my howler, then a Sceery AP6, then a Sceery AP3, then my howler, then a Sceery Ap7 or Pup's call or BryanH's call. The pouch on my calling belt has close to ten calls in it and I've been known to use every one of them on a single stand.

it seems to me that if i have a coyote hang up and switch to another call it doesn't help as if the different sound spooks them the only exception being a squeeler lots of times that will finish them off

Leonard,

No worries on my part, I know if you go someplace where there are coyotes and you play a tune on that call, it'll work... eventually.

Please don't feel rushed or obligated. [Frown]

I just wish I'd known you didn't like a lanyard, I would have happily left off the groove [Wink] (it's actually not easy to get it parallel to the groove that holds the band).

My only concern for the calls I have made, is that they have found a good home. If they aren't loved by the person who has them, that person won't bother to use them...
I made them to be used! (Not to sit in glass cases, or the junk drawer)

I hope your hunting goes well for, you no matter what call you use.

All my calls that I use now days are open reed. Top pick is the Tally Ho followed by Krusty's call and the Verminator Tweety.

Mostly use open reed calls, for distress and also for howling, but the mini-blaster,Lukin rodent and several others get some time.

I wish there were more wooden barrel, open reed calls available, either commercial or custom. I use a Wood Wise HyperHot elk call with a hand cut reed alot of the time. It's basically a AP7 mouth with a wooden barrel.

Bob,

It's nice to make your list, you are definitely doing that call right... you must be hunting in a place where there are some critters!

Say it with me Bob "my Krusty Kriers call" lol

It's YOU'RE call now! [Big Grin] And I believe it's found a good home.

Don't worry, Leonard, you'll go out call and kill something with YOUR call when time the time is right. [Wink]

Greenside,

They probably don't make them, because predator hunters won't pay the prices for them that other hunters will (like goose and duck). And the trend in these other forms of calling is away from wood altoghether, for more "stable" materials like acrylics or resin impregnated woods.
So the manufacturers that make predator calls follow the cheapest of the waterfowlers trends, it seems.

I had Ryan at RAW Calls make me a call, and he came up with pretty much what your looking for;

 -

This is still a prototype, and I don't know if he plans on producing any more.
If he did I would hope that he would produce both wooden tube bodies, but an all acrylic body as well.
MY closed reed acrylic RAW Call has incredible sound, deer like it, and it is one of my favorites.

Gary,

You'd have to check the thicknesses of those duck/goose call reed/reedsets but they may be too thick for our use.

The very first open reed predator call I ever had was a modified duck voice, I learned most of what I know of reed tuning from that call.
The first modofication I made was to replace the doubled reed with a single, that was about 1/3 the thickness.
Later I worked a second "topreed" back into the sound I like.

That RAW call has a single lexan reed, .015" thick, that I made for the call after I recieved it.
I am going to use it as a howler, and the doubled reeds don't howl well at all (they can start or stop with a duckish quack).

Let some waterfowler buy up those reeds.

Norm,

We posted at the same time...

My brother has a Critr Call, which has been stuffed into an old P.S. Olt wooden tube. It changed the whole nature of the sound it makes, it gave it a much deeper, richer tone, without changing the pitch.

While that may be what it looks like Ryan did, trust me, he did a way better job than that.
The tube is about half the overall size of a duck call tube, and so thin you wouldn't believe it.

Krusty,

Trust me, I understand that there is no comparison... but given I have no lathe, and my fingers are missing due to whittling accidents (just kidding); Starting with a duck tube is a starting point for me...

Heck, If we can get something to work pretty decently... maybe we can get Jay to had them to his Rhino line of calls..

Gee... it might be a good thing for a new call maker to spin out some tubes to fit some of the popular calls.

Are ya listnin' Gary?

I ain't got no lathe nither, but I got's all my fingas. -

Krusty

Lots of options. A crit'r call Pee Wee threaded into a Lux. Song Dogs inserted into cow horns. Mini-Blasters dropped into Carlton bells to make mega-blasters. Sceery Ap7 mouths inserted into Red Desert howler bells. A guy can get real creative when it comes to adapting calls. Only problem is that you have the cost of two calls stuck into one call.

I fooled around with making some calls a few years back. I made my reeds out of milk jugs and the hard clear plastic that small gifts are found in. Should be plenty of that stuff available in the morning.

Gary,

The tube's inner diameter should be .850", this should fit the CritR Call standard.
The Olt tube I have has an I.D. of .885" but it took a couple wraps of tape to have it stay firmly inside the tube.
It should be as thin as you feel safe turning, and about 3" long. The bore sould be at least .75" all the way through, and if it were a graduated cone, or bell shape, all the better.

The most common reed material is not actually mylar, it is polyester film. It has clean pitch breaks, and works really well for "call biters" (guys who use their teeth to play a call).
I do have some mylar but I find it a little soft for the thickness and it can have lock-ups for guys who really like to "diaphram huff" a call... but it makes really smooth pitch breaks. But it suits the "soft mouth" style of play really well.
I also use Lexan sheet for reeds, but mostly for distress calls... it has a sharp and sudden pitch breaks but makes really crisp higher pitched sounds. It works best with changes in force of air, and is my favorite choice for doubled reedsets
When I first started making calls I used whatever clear polyvinyl sheet I could get my hands on... A lot of guys got reeds made from the packaging my spotlight came in.
But it splits eventually and many of them have come back for refit. I'd avoid bothering with it at all.

Thicknesses will vary depending on the call, and the caller. But I have used from .007" through .017. The goose reed I have is a .015" sound reed, and a .020 top reed.
Thicker reeds tend to have lower pitch, as does a rounded reed tip shape.
A wider reed will have a lower pitch then a narrower cut one.

I hope this answers some of your questions, if I can be of anymore help just yell.

I stay away from Lohman calls. I started out with them in high school and nearly lost intrest in calling coyotes. I recently took out a play squeeky dolphin from Sea World that my kid plays with in the bath tub. Works great at night.
