what is the difference between a xp 100 action and a short action remington.? I can get a hold of a complete xp 100 for about 2/3 the price of a remington short action and I am wonderinf if it would be worth it. thanks again

Well, an XP100 is almost exactly like a Model 600, except for the trigger modification. I never saw a Model 600 or 660 that was chambered for anything longer than a 308 or 350 Rem. Mag.
When you say short action Remington, I assume you mean some variation of the Model 700, a completely different action available in (I think?) three different lengths.
If you get that XP, I think you will need to buy a trigger?

If that XP100 is a single shot, grab it. It is as good an action as the single shot 40X. Before all the custom actions were around, many top level benchrest rifles were built on the solid bottom XP100. That is one reason they are hard to find now. The ones I have seen for sale lately are in the $5-600 range. I would not pay that much because for just a little more, you can go to a custom action.
The XP100 repeater is nothing special, about the same as a model 7.
