Committed to buying a new shotgun, set on a semiauto due to an increasing lack of tolerance to recoil. Don't want to spend more than I have to, not opposed to paying for a great gun, as opposed to paying less for something much less.
Black plastic doesn't move me, though I'd own one. I wouldn't pay a premium for a camo finish, think they look good, but I'm happy with wood and blue. If the price was the same I'd lean towards the camo.
3.5" isn't necesary, though I would consider a gun chambered that way if it would cycle 1oz. target loads.
The primary usage would be dove hunting and an occasional round of sporting clays, that round being important just for bragging rights...
The gun would see an infrequent use for waterfowl - I'm happy with 3" - informal trap, and an occasional coyote calling trip.
I'm mainly interested in a reliable general purpose action - leaning towards a Browning Gold Hunter 3".
What would you buy and why, or not buy and why not?

Tell you what, Joe. I had used my partner's 500 Mossberg as a emergency gun to deal with sudden surprises, and was never impressed.
When the 835 came out, I bought one of the first ones, serial number is among the first thousand, (or so) made.
Actually, I use it for everything you mention, it's blue and wood, cvost three bills then and I think you can still get it for that? In other words, I don't baby it, at all, if I needed to use it for a jack handle, I would.
I'd also probably go out and buy another, hard to beat, for value. But you don't want a pump; I think it comes in an auto, #? However, doesn't kick any more than any other twelve; I perfer it to my 11-87 that cost twice as much.
Good hunting. LB

Leonard, auto it has to be! I've shot pumps for years and have nothing but great things to say about that action.
The main issue is that I can not take the recoil of 100+++ rounds of the Win AA Super Handicapped that you might shoot in a "friendly" round of sporting clays. Realistically, beyond that, I can kick ass with an 870!!!!
I want to switch to an auto to gain practice on the every day stuff just to be prepared for the days when I might want to shoot well.
The 11-87 is an option, though I will place it on something like "double secret probation". I want something different than the Remington solution and have too many cold weather horror storys about that model to share....
Keeps the ideas coming!

I am certainly fishing for experiences like the "Benelli model XXX" freezes up at blank degrees....
There is one of those that has a "snake skin" look that looks mighty good!

Joe
Maybe check out a Browning Gold. I have one with a 3" chamber and it handles the 1 oz trap loads with no problem.
Speaking of Browning, they do make a 10GA with a 5 shot magazine. It might be easier than adapting a SP10. MSRP $1336!

Dennis,
THe Brownings certainly have my attention, I looked at a couple of used ones tonight that I've been eyeing for a while - just enough signs of use to make me want to get a new one instead. THere is a lot to be said for these guns, they handle great and appear functional.
Handled a few Benellis and Berettas today, a few more bucks, but damned they're nice. THe Berettas are especially calling my name, though one Benelli deal is tempting.
One of the places where I was handling them (Ben. Ber. & Brn) has a pistol that I have to have, the bargaining power of a two gun purchase looks tempting. The logic behind that includes the fact that I haven't bought myself a new gun in at least two years, I'm certainly overdo.
For a guy who has alienated more than one woman because of an aversion to shopping I'm sure enjoying the hell out of this!

JoeF After over 45 years of a lot of Duck, Goose and Quail hunting. Plus thousands of rounds of skeet with every shotgun you can think of. I bit the bullet six years ago and bought a Benelli SBE. I have never been so impressed with a shotgun in my life.
As far as recoil goes. Limbsaver has solved that problem. They say it reduces recoil by 50% . It has been my experience that the Limbsavers on my 835 Ultamag, and the Bennelli reduce recoil more than 50%.
Remember this a Benelli has only three moving parts.

Thanks Ronnie, that is exactly the king of reply I was looking for.
I'm smart enough to know that I should buy something that "fits" or "handles" well. An endorsement of something that works is what i was fishing for!
