Hello all. I have not been active in predator calling now for several years but, the urge has returned in a big way. I have a Rem Model 7 in 22-250 that I need to reload for. The problem is that I have tried several loads using 55 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips over Varget. It works well for me in my Rem VSSF 22-250 but not so well in the 20 inch barrel on the Model 7. I have on hand Varget and H414 powders. Has anyone used H414 with success in a short barrel? Would I be better off using a faster burning powder, different bullet or bullet weight. Any opinions or suggestions?

Well, first of all, welcome back. I didn't remember you, so I looked at your recent posts and they were all in 2004.
Anyway, the 55 Nosler is a good choice.
You know enough to know that a 20 inch barrel might cause incomplete burning with powders normally used in 22-250, which in turn will degrade performance....at least a bit, in theory?
Ball C2 might be just enough faster to burn completely, but that's just a guess?
Anybody out there have some practical data?
Good luck, LB

I had good performance with a 20" barreled 22-250 Imp I used to own. It liked the 55 grain Nosler on top of a stout load of H414, RL15 is another good one.

The burn rate of 414 is about the same as 4350, which is on the slow side for a 20 inch barrel. The M7 has a rather small diameter barrel and usually has a harmonics problem. If you try several different loads without success take a look at the stock to metal fit as well. [ November 01, 2008, 10:16 AM: Message edited by: Dan Carey ]

IMR4064 should be a good powder in that short barrel.

Thanks for the replies. I looked through several reloading manuals and did not find any powders listed that were significantly faster. I guess I will try the fasted powder listed and see what happens.
Thanks again!

Not sure what you mean, probably "fastest" means those listed as suitable for a 22-250, right?
You might look up some loading data for a Thompson Contender or Encore barrel because those loads were developed in a shorter barrel.
Good huting. LB

Correct. I meant faster powders that are listed for the 22-250 than what I was using. I will look up data for a Contender load. Thanks for the tip.
Also, has anyone used a Sims barrel deresonator? I picked one up cheep but haven't tried it yet. Anyone have any luck with one or is it a gimmick?

I'm reloading for a 22-250AI with a 26 in. barrel and for a Rem Mod 7 in 243. Apples to oranges of course but they both have the same case capacity and use the same charge weight with 55 gr. Nosler BTs. I use 414 or VV550N with the long barreled AI but they just don't work well in the Mod 7. IMR 4064 under a heavier 70 BT works best in this rifle. For what it's worth.

Vihtavuori N550 would be a good one to try, along with using the 50 grain Ballistic tips. [ November 04, 2008, 08:16 AM: Message edited by: sparkyibewlocal440 ]
