How come the AR 15 manufacturers stopped chrome plating barrels? A friend of mine has a Colt that he took out on his boat. The bore rusted badly. I didn't see any rust on the rest of the gun though.
I am just curious. thanks. [ April 10, 2011, 04:10 AM: Message edited by: 4949shooter ]

Sounds like he has an older "Match Target" series gun, no flash hider and bayo lug. Also HBAR contour?
Colt went through a period when they were owned by the state of Conneticut due to being insolvent and union issues. They decided to produce a "civilian" gun without the evil features before the ban and cut corners everywhere, chrome lining was one of those corners. I even had one with a plastic buffer.
Thankfully, Colt got back on it's feet and got the state out of there. Development of and Govt. contracts for the M4 got thngs back on track. Colt Defense and Colt Canada (Diemaco) produce MIL spec guns including chrome lining, with Colt Canada using hammer forged barrels. Colt MFG. will at some point make Match Target guns again but so far they haven't made a single one. Neither has Colt Tactical that I know of, another new offshoot directed at LE. Now that the Army owns the M4 patent, they have opened it up for bids to other companies. If and that is a big IF, Colt loses the contract, I think we'll see these new branches kick off. But right now Colt Defense sets the bar.

Exactly..
So the manufacturers are sticking with the chrome lining on mil spec guns only? How about all these "coyote" and "varmint" Ar's?
My BM DCM has a non-lined barrel, but I would expect that on a competition gun.

Chrome lining done right is an expense most mfgs. don't see the need for on most of their lines. Bushmaster has been one of the ones that chrome lined most of their barrels except their Varminter and competition stuff.
CL bores tend to be not as accurate as a non CL'd and most Americans place accuracy much higher than we should. I have 2 Colt light weight barrels that I use and abuse, they will do just over an inch groups but everyone thinks they need 1/4 minute guns to kill anything.
Varmint and target guns don't need to be CL'd and benefit from it for their uses. Guns like the Match Target fiasco were some of the most accurate ones out there for production guns but throw one in a boat for a few years and you see what you get.
I avoid cheaper guns and parts, shortcuts will bite you eventually.

I'm beginning to be impressed with Mr Tom's knowledge of machineguns. Maybe if they didn't come in all colors, as long as they are black, I could start to warm up? Like, hot pink. Camo, hot pink. The non shooting public is not cool with machineguns, a consideration that is a fact of life. That sort of attitude can encompass anything semi-auto, and it isn't a far distance to round it off to "autos". Many of us do that, and understand the distinction, even if we misuse the description. The ignorant nonshooting public doesn't quite get it, and believes these things have only one purpose, to kill, especially if the anti's can squeeze in another misconception like "high capacity magazines". Even AZ game and fish thinks something is wrong with having more than five cartridges in a magazine.
They always win, we always give in. They have nothing to lose, we lose incrementally, every time they dream up a false issue.
What were we talking about? I forget?

Leonard Im begining to think youre sexist. Of course we need pink guns, the best in feminine protection a pink .45 for light days and a pink AR for heavy days.

Too funny.
I have a soon to be 6yo grandaughter with a pink Daisy BB gun. I will build her a pink AR before long unless she keeps leaning towards puprle as her favorite color.
I don't care what color it is as long as it get's em interested in shooting. They will pick our nursing homes and make the rules soon enough. The more on our side, the better home we get...

I've been lookin around for a pink cricket .22 for my grandaughter. When shes old enough I think she'll settle for an Ar of any color.

Paul, I've been looking at those too and from what I gather, they ain't much of a gun. My cuzz did buy one for his girl years ago and I remember the extractor wasn't worth a hoot, we used our pocket knives so she could shoot.
I put together a light weight AR with a 22lr kit in it and she talked me out of it. Her daddy about went broke buying shells for it.
A few guns that I was told to look at are the CZ Scout, Savage Cub and the TC Hot Shot. Much better performance so I've been told.

You're welcome, glad I could be of assistance.
As for the mag restriction, it wouldn't make much difference but would hurt my feelings. I lived through the ban and am glad I don't have any restrictions except what I want to carry now.
Total highjack so give me extra points LB but here's a pic of me, the wife and some friends this weekend at a rattlesnake festival. My wife first said she'd stay in the truck but she enjoyed it. She didn't much care for the snake looking her in the eye here though. He was very much alive.

I hope she just pulled that snake out of a very cold ice chest. I am not afraid of snakes but I do give them a little room and respect.

No LB, I'm the younger more handsome feller wearing the black hat.
Why? A couple of good looking gals were running the booth.
The snake couldn't bite, our friends (in the pic) had been arguing over going for years. She finally consented to going if we'd go with them and he could scratch it off his bucket list and she'd never have to hear about it again. By the looks of the pic, I think she enjoyed it more than he did. My wife did too but I don't think I'll get her to another one.

Tom looks like a good time was had by all. What did they do to the snake to render it harmless?
