Hey guys! Leonard had advised me a few months ago to get a 22-250 as my first centerfire-- the Rem 700 ADL at the local W-mart. (Can't buy guns from them now.) The only other rifle I had owned was a Remy 597 .22LR.

Before going to the w-mart, however, I needed some fishing stuff and went to the fishing/gun shop (Turner's). They had a huge selection of rifles. So naturally I looked at the varmint rifles and noticed they mostly had heavy barrels. The new savage 10fp with the accutrigger was on sale but it was a .308 and was really heavy. One of the guys I work with, an ex-marine, had said he used his .308 chuck hunting at long distances for practice. He bragged that he shot 130 gr V-max's with great results @ 300-500 yds.

So I bought the .308 (under peer pressure of course) and started the beautiful art of reloading.

Everytime I shoot this thing at the range, I dread having to carry it. It's sooo heavy. It wears a Burris 3.5-10x50mm and Harris Bipod also. It regularly shoots 0.5 MOA.

Today, my friend saw a Burris (3-9x40) for sale at Turner's and I accompanied him. The Winchester 70 "coyote" 22-250 was on sale. My eyebrow twitched, heart rate increased, vision narrowed, palms sweaty...then the unbelievable happened, The CA drivers license magically appeared into my trembling hand and flew into the salesman's hand for the DROS.

Time and Space blurred.

Next thing I know, I'm paying for a new rifle (which I should have gotten in the first place, duh) and a new scope.

2 Rifles in 3 months and no wife to make excuses to.

And so, a big thanks to Leonard for recommending that caliber to me; I should have listened to you the first time. I hope to use it hunting this fall.

And now to the Optics Forum to ask which is the best glass for hunting, hehe...

Congrats Neil.Do you reload ? One of the biggest thrills for me about getting any new rifle that I actually keep [Big Grin] ,is working up a load for it that I like.

Yes sir i started reloading. Favorite load for the .308 is 168gr SMK in front of 44.5gr Varget. Rem brass/CCI primers. Most groups are .3-.5" (the rifle isn't bedded.)I was going to make up some loads for for the 130gr Spire Point but bought the 22-250.

So now, I have to re-research loads for the 22-250. What weight bullet do you guys recommend?

Good hunting

I've got the fith edition nosler manual here,if anybody needs any specs from it on any load.On the .308,I use 180 grain nosler partitions, backed with 47.1 grains of IMR4350,and federal match primers. It's a max load by some books, but it sure does smoke a deer.It stings a little recoil wise, but not enough to make you mad [Big Grin] !!

I'm still working up 22-250 and 223 loads, using 60 grain nosler partitions. Can you tell yet I'm a parttition fan [Big Grin] ??

Will the 60gr bullets stabilize in a 22-250 barrel with a 1:14 twist? I just ordered a bunch of 50gr Vmax's and i have som varget powder already.

Hi Neil,

If you are "in to" predator hunting, at all, you will never regret getting that 22-250.

If you like to bust squirrels, then the 50gr. bullets are very adequate, but I'd not use them on coyotes.

For that matter, I would rather see you using the 55 grain Ballistic Tips than the partition bullet.

Which range are you shooting at, Fish canyon or the West End Gun Club? And where are you, exactly? I'm between San Antonio and Mountain, very close to 16th.

Good hunting. LB

Hiya Leonard!

I'm between Campus and Grove on 14th. I shoot Lytle Creek's Firing Line. I knew a guy that lived on Coolcrest.

I ordered a bunch of stuff from Cabela's today: rings and a base, scope covers, 22-250 brass, and a box of 50gr Vmax's. Had I known, I would have gotten the 55 grainers. I pick up the Rifle on the 27th.

Where is fish canyon? and do you have to be a member to shoot at the West end gun club? My hunting experience is very minimal--one coyote hunt near Silverwood last January (didn't realize how out of shape I was-that's a whole different story, didn't kill anything either) and the birds in the backyard with my BB-gun (the off white, dirty looking pigeons that are always seen in pairs.) But I like to fish!

Maybe one day, we can go to a local range and shoot some paper. I need to sight in the scope when the rifle comes.

Happy Hunting

I would recommend you stay away from the 40 grain ballistic tip for coyotes. When they first came out I worked up a load that was cookin’. Most of them went into paper targets and water jugs. However, the one that got directed at a coyote didn’t perform. It was one of those 80 yard broadside shots, the coyote was standing still. I touched off and knew I had made a good shot on him. I heard the pop of the impact, the coyote crumpled and I started walking out to gather it up. I got half-way there and the coyote got up and ran off. He had all four legs under him and didn’t seem to be missing any gears. I found where he had gone down and there wasn’t a spec of blood to be found anywhere.

Fish Canyon is a sort of nick name for the San Gabriel Gun Club, in Duarte. West End allows the public on week ends, or as the guest of a member at other times. I haven't paid any attention to that new deal further up Lytle Creek, I understand it's a lot safer than it used to be?

Good hunting. LB

I heard they used to stash dead bodies up in Lytle Creek!

As far as I'm concerened, Lytle Creek seems pretty safe to me. They've got the range masters and do not tolerate irresponsible shooters. They also have a 300 yard range and a 100 yard range. Cost is $8/shooter and a refundable deposit if you shoot shotgun (just pick up your hulls). They're open from all week except Sundays, 8am-4pm. There can be a lot of wind at times too.

When I was there last, there were 4 guys doing stupid things: rapid firing an AK from the hip, shooting 1911's in each hand rapid fire, shooting at what appeared to be empty gallon paint thinner containers, and just being generally rude (to the guys running the place). They also appeared to have been drinking. The head range guy brought 6 of his buddies and escorted the 4 off the property.
