Hello everyone, great site! I'd like to try 35gr VMAX pills in my 223 in the hopes of limiting fur damage. Does anyone out there have any experience with them?

Been there, done that, and they flat out sucked!

They either splashed on the surface, or didn't kill the coyote.

Welcome to the New Huntmasters, ballistic_trep. Glad to have you join the crowd.

Someday, we must explore the most effective bullet weight for use in a 223, under various conditions and purposes.

For right now, I have a hunch that 52/53/55 grain bullets are the best killers, in that cartridge. Best killers with the least amount of damage is where we need a lot of imput from actual users under actual field conditions.

Good hunting. LB

I use a 40gr Blitzking over 26.5 gr of Benchmark powder and it is a yote killin machine. I started using this combination about 2 months ago and have yet to lose one. In fact all shot where bang flops with no exit holes. I am very impressed with this load and it will be my primary hunting load from now on !!

PS-I shot 13 yotes with this load and like I said instant kill no exit.

Welcome to the New Huntmasters, Mani. Glad to have you on Board.

Have not been in Manitoba, but in my youth, spent some time in the north woods of Minnesota. My guess is that you have a lot of underbrush and lodge pole pines, and you get them in rather close? I also suppose your shots on coyotes are of moderate range? Be that as it may, it's good to hear that you are satisfied with your load.

Out here, western conditions, where shots may be 50 yards, one time, and 250+ the next, I don't really think a 40 grain Blitzking will do the job. It sheds velocity to the point where it may not smack a coyote hard enough, way out there; except under ideal conditions.

Good hunting. LB

Nope I live in the praries and most of my calling in done out of willow sloughs in the flat open farmland areas. Most of my shots calling are takin between 100-200yrds. Occasionallly ya get the odd one that comes in under 50 yrds but that is only because I didn't see them soon enough. I prefer the 100 yrd shot myself. The furthest one I have takin with this load and although this won't be 100% accurate because I paced it out and did not use a rangefinder but it should be close was 314 yrds same result bang flop. In ggeneral I do not like to make shots like that but it was in a weak moment and had to give it a try !! [Big Grin]

Ditto what Tim has said. In the 223, they just do not perform as well as the heavier bullets do. I use them exclusively in the 22 hornet, and in that cartridge and velocity, they can't be beat in my opinion. The 35s in my hornet are pushing 2900 fps, and at that speed they seem to be perfect, pushed a couple hundred fps faster, and they just don't hold up.

Guess I know how Elmer Keith felt, all those years, the old fart preaching about heavy bullets, and being ignored.

We old fossils, our ranks are thinning. A man has to stand for something, be it subcalibers or cannons! At least the Military now sees some value in a heavier bullet. All I can say is: good luck with your 35/40 grain bullets.

I thought, (at least) AZ (and Tim) knew better, don't know what made him try it? Big surprise! 35 gr. ground squirrel bullets don't anchor coyotes! [Smile]

(no offense, gentlemen) (just having a little fun with ya)

Hey, speaking of the coyote gods; great idea for the Texas Predator Video. Sneakers!

Good hunting. LB [Smile]

Maybe my memory is failing me Leonard, but I seem to remember you using your big gun, with big bullets, blowing big holes on and thru coyotes, then having them run like hell for the next county:) As for my sneakers....those just weren't any sneakers, they were my "Mexican Wrestler" shoes, like the ones Tito Enfante used to wear!
Yeah, I have used the 35 grain V-max for quite some time in my hornet, with the best results Ive had from any hornet type bullet, so I had them around and just had to spit some out of my 223. It was not a good idea, my standard 223 load for coyotes is either the 50 or 55 grain Nosler ballistic tip, super bullet for 223s.

Down, boy! Down!

Yeah, okay, got me there, I had that runner, and you saw him and helped me out a little. No excuse, and I'm still scratching my head about that one. Nothing and nobody's perfect.

I think you have settled on a good replacement, though. By all accounts, the Nosler Ballistic Tips are decent coyote medicine.

So, which is the better killer, at 223 velocities? I know several guys using the 55 grain BT in 22-250s and other hot rock chamberings. Don't know too much about the 50 grainers, but I'm willing to listen.

Chilli Rojo, in his famous Mexican Wrestler sneakers....and those tassels are muy macho. [Razz]

Good hunting. LB

You can get away with any bullet out to 100 yards or so as long as the wind isn't blowing and you have a perfect broadside shot.

Beyond that BC rules. Even at 100 BC rules if the wind is blowing.

Thank you, Jack.

Even discounting the accuracy potential of a heavier bullet with a higher ballistic coefficient with a better shape & dealing with wind and various presentations;
they also kill better.

Meanwhile; in Margaritaville:

Hey Vic, just curious. Did Tito put up much of a fight? What takedown did you use? and where did you hide the body? The pre WWF mental image cracks me up.

A non-fair fight. Have you heard about the chimp attack? Five times the strength of a human, and more aggressive.

Nancy went to school with both of them, Jim and LaDonna Davis.

Chewed his face off. Ripped his eye socket, tore off his nose. Lost all his fingers, mutilated his foot, ripped off his testicles.

Her thumb was bitten off by this cuddly creature.

Gotta wonder.....LB
