Author Topic: Varmint Hunter's new rifle Tim Behle Administrator MacNeal Sector Member # 209 posted May 23, 2006 08:19 PM                       Varmint Hunter and I have found ourselves to be using the same gunsmith lately. And a couple of weeks ago, I was privy to getting to see his new rifle before him. Beautiful rifle, and if it shoots anything like the one Glen just finished for me, you are going to love it. I was working with some seating depths tonight, and now I need to decide between a three shot, 3/4" group with two holes touching and one "Flyer", and a three shot 3/4" group that looks like a clover leaf. Dick Davis ( Left ) even liked the new rifle, his only comment was that he thought you should have went with a McMillian stock And Ronnie, I'm shooting those 3/4" groups at 300 yards. He was putting on the last coat of finish. He said it would take three days to cure, then he will ship it. The dies and bullets came in today. I am like a kid at Christmas. Don't worry about you getting to see it first. I am always last, except for ass whippings. Then the mean guys always pick me first. Kick there butts in that next match Tim. And I'm sure that thing is the key that unlocks the gates of Hades. I've been pulling out everything that I couldn't get the neck concentricity down to .002" or less. Joyce thought it was fine until she asked what .002" looked like. Now she swears that I've gone nuts. Tonight I will move on to sorting bullets. I just got in 400 Berger, 190 grain, 30 cal match bullets. They need to be sorted by weight, then bearing length, then have the meplates trimmed and sorted by weight again. And after all of that, I probably won't win anything, ( I never have, but I'm too hard headed to quit ) but I sure have fun playing! It was that concentricity gauge that was my moral downfall. I'd have been better off trying to explain to my wife why I needed to buy a lifetime pass to every Whorehouse in Mexico. I'd think time better spent checking loaded ammunition bullet runout, and start using chamber type dies and arbor press. Are you turning the entire neck? Before, or after firing, or both? I might have missed it somewhere, but curious of the caliber, make, ect... Good lookin gun. Tim, its fun, but your gonna drive yourself nuts messin with that stuff. I didnt get nearly that deep into it and it got to where nothing was good enough. Seems you can find flaws in anything and thats always in your head when you go to the range or hunting. The reality is, its plenty good. I think Tim's is a 300 Ultra Mag. Tim, If you used the expression For .002 I think you did. I can tell you as a machinist for 33 years that term is used in all machine shops. Just like when the indicator or mikes read + or - .000 that is considered" Dead nuts". We machinist are a nasty bunch with our "Bastard files".and "C" hairs. I consider anything under .0005 to be dead nuts. I've got most of my brass down to .0015 or less now. Andy, Once a month I go up to Tucson and shoot a 1,000 yard benchrest match. I can't see any fun in going insane alone, so I keep trying to talk Ronnie into going nuts with me. I figured if I showed some pictures of his new rifle being shot next to me, he might find it harder to resist and show up. Last month I was shooting 12" 10 shot groups. With my new chamber and virgin brass. That was good enough to make me competitive, but the match was won with a 9.08" Aggregate. If I'm going to take home wood, I need to shoot three ten shot groups under 9" ( And not go nucking futs and broke in the process ) -------------------- Personally, I carry a gun because I'm too young to die and too old to take an ass kickin'. Thumbholes don't really work that well for me, but I sure like the looks of them and if they work for you, more power to ya! And I just love those big honking Shehanes. In fact, I gotta disagree with the Gent that suggested you should have got a McMillan instead. I guess the reason I like them so much is the first stock I ever did back in 69 was a Fajen TH. It was for a Rem 22-250. I shot so blasted much stuff with that rifle, and won a hell of a lot of bets with it. I have been a THE freak ever since. Shortly after building it I was out with my arch rivals. Spotted a Gray Squirrel sitting in the crotch of a tree. I said I not only could hit him, I would hit him in the head. Out came two ten dollar bills from my buddies. This was in the days when ten bucks was a lot of money, and there were no range finders. The 40 gr Sisk when in his right ear at 424 paced yards. -------------------- Make them pay for the wind. I have had a few and learned that (for me) they definitely have a place in the field, but sometimes they can be a bit awkward, like in winter, when wearing gloves. Sometimes they can be a bit slower to mount. But, for precision shooting from a solid rest, I find a thumbhole to be very comfortable, especially at night. Good hunting.
