Have several that have spoken up for barrels already. Anyone here interested? $45 off reg. price, any contour, caliber and metal. I'll confirm each barrel fits the criteria as we go. Loren.

Please email me so I have your barrel spec and name and not forget anyone.

Put me down for one. How soon do I need to decide if I want it in .17 or .284?

Thanks Tim. I'd guess 1 or 2 weeks realisticly. Planning on getting everyones wish list, contacting Dan and checking to see they all meet the parameters first. Let me know. Loren.

I will take a barrel if they can do it to the contour and twist I want.

Jack

Hi Jack, thanks for joining in. Would you please email me with specs on what you want and I'll start getting a list together for Dan to check over. You too Tim. I'll send them all in so I'm on the same page with everyone else. Thanks Guys.

Make mine a 7mm 9 twist 4 groove in Chrome-moly, with a #7 contour.

Is it too late to change my order?

lol Tim

Hha ha ha no Tim, you're fine. What'll you have? :>)

Posted by Tim Behle (Member # 209) on January 11, 2006, 03:18 AM:

The only way to be sure that I don't later have regrets, is to order two barrels.

So make my second barrel a #1 contour in .172 cal, nine twist. Chrome-moly also

Geez, must be good to be Tim nowadays! [Eek!] [Big Grin]
Gotcha. Oh, do I need a length there?

Like I said in the other thread, that Dave is a bad influence.

Standard length will be fine. I'll probably finish the 7mm at 27" and the .17 at 24"

But I still can't decide if I want the 7mm to be in Dakota, RUM, STW or something else. I need to look into which cartridge makes the best use of a 27" barrel, and 162 Amax combination.

I'm even a bad influence on myself!

If I hadn't just spent all the money I have or am going to have for quite some time on a Jeep, I'd probably be getting another barrel with you guys, just on GP.

I love my jeep, I just can't afford to get it running again. I'm spending all of my money on new barrels [Big Grin]

Tim, why not make it three?

I can't believe you don't need a new barrel in 22 or 24 or 25 caliber?

They make good jack handles, too.

Good hunting. LB

Leonard,

It's simple, Anything that a 22 or 24 can do, a 17 can do better. Less mess, visible impacts, better wind resistance, Less drop.

Some 25's might beat the 17's. But they can't even come close to touching a 7mm.

Why don't you just email Loren and order a 17 barrel for yourself. You'll get a good price, and we won't tell on you.

Think about this, three of the most knowledgeable gun guys on this board. Dave, Shawn and Vic, Are all 17 shooters.

There must be a good reason for that.

Hey Leonard, this one I'm going to try would put some dang fine ballistics in the air. Not much maybe on effeciency but that remains to be proven. [Big Grin]

So you're a trouble maker huh Tim? Only thing Dan had to say about the barrel list is comments on your two. [Big Grin]
He says he would "much prefer" a 6 groove in the 7mm. And, Dan doesn't do .17's in CM. SS only. What would you like me to do? Loren.

Posted by Tim Behle (Member # 209) on January 14, 2006, 10:16 AM:

I'll be danged. The first negative comment I've heard about 4 groove barrels, and it came from Dan.

Let me drop him a quick note and ask him why.

CM or SS really doesn't matter much to me. I had thought I might get these barrels blued. I've never built anything with a CM barrel before, I've always ordered SS. I just thought I'd try something different this time.

DAA, ( Or anyone else )

I'm planning on shooting the 162 Amax as fast as I can out of a 27" barrel. ( I haven't yet decided on what brass to base it on yet )

What would you pick for a hot loaded 7? 4 groove or 6?

Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on January 14, 2006, 11:02 AM:

Tim, there is a lot of talk about five groove 5r, 5c barrels. I'm not that sure of the letter designation, but essentially, the lands have angled, or rounded edges. You might want to chesk into it? I think I'm convinced enough to try one.

Good hunting. LB

edit: the downside is I don't know if Lilja does it, or can order the blanks rifled that way?

Jack and Tim, will you please email me your shipping address so I can work up the rates? I figure on looking for at least close to the cheapest, let me know if you want different.

I finally heard back from Dan. Make that 7mm a 6 groove. CM or SS doesn't matter, but I need it in 9 twist.

Has any one here ever used Kirby Allen from up in Montana? I'm looking at building one of his 7mm Allen Mags.

So spill your guts on the groovy theory....??

You can't go wrong by listening to the barrel maker..

Jack

Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on January 15, 2006, 10:26 PM:

Tim, Kerby did the work on my 223Ackley Improved. I'm satisfied. The Allen Mags are pretty radical, all max overbore cases, so barrel life will be limited, especially CM. To the point that I don't think it would be wise. Stainless is a much better choice if you are considering an Allen Mag.

Good hunting. LB

I'm probably looking at only 1,000 rounds for throat life, So if you haven't already ordered it, make mine both in SS. If you've already placed the call, don't worry, Dan will make me a new one when I burn out the throat in this one.

Dan and I talked about the grooves, and he came right out and said he didn't like the four groove barrels that he makes. He said they were too tight and I'd be better off with a six groove.

Kirby and I have been swapping emails about his 7AM. I'd been wanting to build an STW, but I'd like to get away from the belt. He thinks with a 162 Amax I should be able to get +3,500. I'd been hoping for something in the 3400-3450 range.

I figure it would make a nifty little coyote sniping rifle, and if I ever get drawn for Antelope or Elk, It'd do the trick there as well.

Barrel makers like Dan Lilja, have got to love big case designers like Kirby Allen. [Wink]

Loren and Jack,

What are you going to build?

Before I got the .17 Rem. I was wanting a simple way to make a .17 out of what I had. Ruger All Weather .243 is a favorite rifle in the closet so building something on the .473 bolt got my interest. BR is too short to feed completely reliable when necked to .17 according to a couple guys I talked to. Want to keep as reasonable capacity as possible so that meant going with the smallest body dia. so I can have some length to feed well. Only one choice left. Shortened Swift. Where the sketches are now it looks to be mid to low 30's capacity, still bigger than I want. With the 26"/1 contour I think it'll do OK. I may have a .17 barrel for sale soon too. [Roll Eyes]

By the way Tim, I've got a new unfired old model All Weather(told you I liked them) in .338 Win. waiting to be bored to a .330 Dakota. A 7 Dakota would be a wiz banger too. [Eek!]

Loren,

Now we just need a group buy on some McMillan or HS stocks. Still trying to hunt down an action/rifle to use for this .17 Pred. project. Was hoping to get a stainless Rem action, but havent found a good .223 donor rifle yet.

Take care!

A group buy on Nesika actions would be nice.

I really think they are as good as it gets.

Jack

Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on January 27, 2006, 08:08 AM:

Yeah, I might have to get in on that action, myself!

As far as stainless actions, in general, I'm still evaluating. I have one Ruger and one Remington, and so far I don't see what the big deal is?

Good hunting. LB

Jack,

Borden Rifles is coming out with two new Actions this Spring. The Alpine is built to drop into a 700 SA stock, and the Timberline is designed to drop into a 700 LA stock. Both are set to sell for $600

They should be about the same or a little cheaper than getting a Model 700 Accurised. Plus resale on a Custom Action is generaly better than a 700.

Oh if your building a predator, you NEED this action...

Tim,
For the cheaper actions I don't think you can beat the Wichita. Not the prettiest but very good.

However the Nesika is a bit better as for accuracy and very pretty, not that I care about pretty.

Jack

Ken

I had looked at that one as well, but it just didn't stick in my mind as much as the Borden did.

It's a shame we all can't get a group buy on various actions. Then Jack could get his Nesika, and I could get my Timberline.

Will McMillan do quantity discounts? I sure do like the looks of that A-5. Maybe someone could talk Varmint Hunter out of his dreams of a Shehane ST 1000 and he could go in with us?

Ok..now you've got me looking at some of those "custom" actions. Would love to do a Nesika or BAT, but that would blow my budget out of the water.

Of the less expensive actions, any thoughts on which is the best. The barrel is a Lilja #4 contour which will be finished off at 24".

Jack,

Does Wichita have a website?

Ken,

The Pred. action could be cool for the .17 Pred.

Thanks!

Ken,

Have you seen the new Short Actions that GA Precision is coming out with after the SHOT show?

http://www.snipershide.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=18;t=002919;p=1

Aren't you needing to build a new rifle? With these new actions starting at just under $700, they run about the same as getting a M700 blueprinted.
