I just got done watching the State Funeral for President Reagan and watching Nancy Reagan has got tears in my eyes. She is such a woman of strength and honor. Whether you liked him as president or not, you cannot deny what he did for this country and for the world.
Fourteen years ago, he came to Abilene as part of the centennial celebration of President Eisenhower's 100th birthday. I was with EMS and was stationed near the entrance of the Eisenhower Presidential Complex with my best friend, a Sheriff's Deputy. As we stood there talking and passing the time, a maroon Crown Victoria puilled up alongside of us and stopped to wait for the escort vehicles in front of it to move ahead. I looked down and to my right, and there - three feet from me through a passenger side rear window - sat former President Reagan. He flashed us a beaming smile with that telltale twinkle in is eye, waved his left hand and we could read his lips as he said, "Thank you." He nodded his head and the car pulled ahead. Later that day, we got to hear him speak for a half-hour and it stands out as a high point in fifteen years of emergency medicine.
I've heard a lot of things said about how President Reagan appealed to the common man, and I'm about as common as they come. The one thing that stands out for me in being that close to the man, if only for a few seconds, is that he took the time to acknowledge us standing there, doing our job, and offered his thanks. So cool.

When a Man of honor is laid to rest, And we don't shed a tear. We aren't much of a Man ourselves.

I kept noticing the spin control.
He didn't "Win" the Cold War; he, "helped end it". Many other little digs, if you paid atention.
But, not important. His legacy won't come into focus for a number of years, if the Dems have their way.
Good hunting. LB

Misty eyed hell, I had tears rolling to tell you the truth, especially when the fighter planes missing man manuever comes rolling in.Gets me every time.Bag pipes too. What a beautiful place he chose to rest at and perfect time of day for the funeral.I hope Nancy fares well after all this, people in relationships like they had tend to go down hill after one of them passes.
