Hey folks,

Rich Higgins wanted me to post this picture here so you could take a look at this coyote. It was taken in NH with a 17 HMR last winter.

Thats a whopper. If our coyotes start getting that big, I'm going to something in the 7mm range for a coyote gun!

nd coyote killer,
They are interbred with wolves. You can definately see the wolf traits in him. I believe he was an Alpha Male, he had been in many fights, both ears had old fight wounds(healed), part of the right ear is missing. I have other pics of him, if your interested.

David post any more pics you have of your NH coyotes . They don't look like western coyotes.

Rich, aren't you supposed to be workin? LOL.

Here is another of the same one from another angle, the pack he is resting on is about 12 inches wide. You can see the wounds in his ears.

No, they really don't look the same. I've seen a ton of coyotes, but the western coyote is distinctive.

Thanks for sharing, DOD.

Now, twenty lashes with a wet noodle for not using enough gun! [Smile]

Good hunting. LB

Leonard,

LOL. He didn't go far, about 50 yards or so. I did start caring the 243 more when hunting this area though, many more where he came from. Besides, whats wrong with the HMR, seemed to do the trick. Hit him square in the chest, would go for a head shot next time though.

I am at work David, I check the board two or three times a day like most of the guys here. I'm self employed ( yeah, yeah, my boss is an ******* ) and can get away with it.
I have a 17 AH , which is quite a bit more cartridge than the HMR- 15gr Berger at 4066 fps- and I would in no way have the confidence to use it on a 50 lb coyote. Proper bullet placement is a wonderful thing isn't it?

DOD, We are supposed to grow things BIG in Texas. We don't have anything that looks like that. Not even in the Houston Zoo. Beautiful animal.

Thanks for the kind posts folks. They are a little bigger than some are accustomed to uh? According to University of New Hampshire, there is Wolf DNA in the coyotes up here, some seem to possibly have a bit more than others [Smile] . There are the smaller variety too, but I am now partial to these, and mainly look for them now. I won't pass up a shot at any that presents itself though [Big Grin] .

Rich, as I mentioned to you, after seing this one up close and personal, I take the .243 now. I wouldn't be to fond of wounding one and having the chance that it might decide to come after me, like Bill Cosby said, first you say it, then you do it. I load 55 gr that supposedly comes out at 4000fps (don't have a chrono myself, so I take the load developers word for it), whatever the speed, sure does get there quick, and a nice flat trajectory too.
