Happy Birthday Vic!

It will never happen to me. I'm obedient and I promised my grandpa that I'll never get old. He and Mick Jagger seem to think it a drag getting older! [Wink]

OLD GUYS RULE!

We still love our "Moldies But Goodies"
By John Weeks, Staff Writer

Back in the 1960s and '70s, when rock 'n' rollers were cutting their deals with the devil, they obviously weren't thinking clearly. They forgot to ask for eternal good looks as part of the bargain.
As a result, they look like hell.

Next to these guys, the Portrait of Dorian Gray doesn't look too bad.

If Rolling Stone magazine keeps putting people like Bob Dylan and the Stones on its cover, stores will start stocking it next to the horror novels.

Of course, these guys still can rock. That part of the deal worked out pretty well for them.

In fact, they're outgunning their younger contemporaries, big time, at arena and stadium-size venues around the country.

That's right, most of the hot touring acts this year aren't hot at all. They are old geezers and wheezers who haven't had a hit record in decades.

They still pack in the crowds, though, because fans are nostalgic, and they want to hold on to their youth. And compared to the performers on stage, most fans are looking great!

Can acts like the Rolling Stones, the Eagles and Paul McCartney keep performing forever?

You bet.

Eventually, though, they might want to update their material so it is more age-appropriate. It's a little unseemly for old men to be ranting and raving about young lust and teen angst.

Even a band like U2, which still is making hit records, must make its peace with the advancing years. Bono and his buddies, who will play Staples Center in Los Angeles in November, are in their mid-40s now, and the time is coming soon when they will want to bring their playlist into line with the ravages of age.

Such hits, for example, as "The Unforgettable Fire" and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" could be tweaked a little to become "The Unforgettable Fiery Rash" and "I Still Haven't Remembered What I'm Looking For."

Neil Diamond, who performs at Staples this weekend, is 64 now. Perhaps it's time to update memorable songs like "Sweet Caroline," "Cracklin' Rosie" and "Solitary Man." New titles: "Sweet Iodine," "Wrinklin' Rosie" and "Sanitarium Man."

Tom Petty, 54, whose tour made a swing through Southern California earlier in the summer, is responsible for a rich catalog of teen anthems. Soon, though, he probably will want to change tunes like "Learning to Fly" and "Free Fallin' " to "Forgetting My Fly" and "I've Fallin' and I Can't Get Up."

John Fogerty, 60, and John Mellencamp, 53, brought their twin-bill tour to Hollywood Bowl last month. The crowd still loves

such Fogerty favorites as "Keep On Chooglin'" and "Who'll Stop the Rain?" as well as Mellencamp hits like "I Need a Lover" and "Little Pink Houses."

Nobody could swagger like Fogerty and Mellencamp, when they were younger, but the next time we see these guys they probably will be singing modified versions of their songs: "Keep On Droolin'," "Who'll Stop the Pain?" "I Need a Liver" and "Little Pink Convalescent Homes."

The Eagles are in the midst of a barnstorming tour of Southern California, with dates pending at Arrowhead Pond and Staples Center. They're still a huge draw, but they're in their 50s now, and it won't be long, probably, before such Eagles classics as "Heartache Tonight" and "Witchy Woman" become "Backache Tonight" and "Twitchy Woman."

Paul McCartney is 63. Starting next year, he can sing the old Beatles song "When I'm 64," and mean it. Meanwhile, the legendary performer brings his tour to the Southland in November with dates at Arrowhead Pond and Staples Center.

Will such hits as "Band On the Run" and "Listen to What the Man Said" be changed to "Band With the Runs" and "Listen to What the Nurse Said"? We'll have to wait and see.

Instead of "Maybe I'm Amazed" and "Hi Hi Hi," perhaps he will sing, "Maybe I'm Lobotomized" and "Ow Ow Ow."

The Rolling Stones, who have gathered much moss in recent years, visit Southern California for November gigs at Angel Stadium, Hollywood Bowl and Petco Park.

The Stones are a force of nature, but even forces of nature eventually subside.

It's OK, though. We'll still love the Stones, even when they are singing, instead of "Ruby Tuesday" and "Street Fighting Man," such amended versions as "Droopy Tuesday" and "Bed Wetting Man."

"Angie" still will be a stirring song, even when it becomes "Angioplasty."

And "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and "Get Off My Cloud" still will be fun to dance to, even when they are changed to "Thumpin' Hot Flash, and "Get Me My Shroud."

Vic,

You need to start getting busy on those coyotes. I took a call in Tombstone last night, and on the way home at about 11:30, I had a coyote run across the road in front of me.

He crossed into your front pasture about 10' West of your gate, heading right for your front door.

You really should do something about them before they become a road hazard.

See folks! He's been wackin' and stackin' for decades, and they are still thick as fleas on a hound's back.

Seems like McNeal, AZ is the center of the coyote hunting universe? Wish I had it so good!

Good hunting. LB

Must have been what nabbed one of my chickens? I left the coop door open, and saw a pile of feathers next morning. I did go out Geronimo trail way last weekend, called two, Carlos shot one, missed the other, you know the story out there, breezy, and lots of foot traffic as well as Border Patrol.
Ive yet to bloody my rifle this fall Tim, will you take me out and call a coyote for me? We'll have to set up a day, maybe get out for a few stands?

I haven't killed a coyote yet either. The last few weeks it's either been too windy to get out, or the one day I did get out, I got called in to work on my second stand.

With all of those trees you have, it was probably a hawk or an owl that got your chicken. The dogs just ran off a pair of hawks here a couple of mornings ago who wanted a chicken breakfast.

If you want a replacement chicken, just come over and pick one out. We just had a hen come wondering up out of the weeds Thursday with 8 more chicks. Our third brood this summer. It's amazing how well those birds can camo themselves. We walked right up to her several times looking for her and her nest, never saw her until she came out with the chicks.
