Cdog911,

You sure did skip out on a good time. But there was some talk about holding out until January or so of next year, to make it easier for guys like you and Cal to attend.

We got lucky and were able to get our same campsite again this year.

 -

Gerald brought everything but the kitchen sink to help us be more comfortable. He even brought a portable blind to use as a latrine. Byron fell in love with it the morning after he discovered that there is a difference between Atomic Buffalo Turds and Popcorn.

 -

It was great to see the old frinds.

 -

Even if one leg humper did show up. But at least it was only Nistetter that the Monkey fell in love with!

I was afraid that damn monkey would be one of the first photos to show up. Nevermind the fact that we were there to hunt coyotes. Noooooo! Let's show the damn monkey instead.

Jay,

I'm still waiting for Higgins to send me a video clip so I can post a link and everyone can see and hear what the monkey did to you!

***Sheep Alert***

Missing in the hot sun of the desert deep in Arizonia... Two Sheep going by the names of Hanna and Stella. Hanna is black with red lipstick and a satisfying grin on her snout... Stella is white with red lipstick and also the same satisfying grin on her face...

If anyone knows the whereabouts of these two gals they should report it to border control immediately as they might be heading to the Texas Border!!!

[Eek!]

Day one with me.
Late start. First stand Friday 8:30AM
Brent Rube and Sheri Baity with me.
Called in 5?? coyotes from 8:30 to 11AM
Brent Rube called and shot one on his very first stand. Got good video. -

Sheri called in a 2 and Brent shot one on her very first stand. Good video of working coyote in close but lost the money shot because it was behind a bush. Video picked up the hard watermelon thump though. Sheri continued calling for another 5 minutes and about that time, I decided to light a cigarette thinking nothing else was going to come in. One puff later I hear a coyote bark at my 8 o'clock, turn and there he was 30 feet from me. BUSTED! He ran off about 200 yards in the brush and continued barking at us for 15 minutes. Brent and Sheri tried getting him in closer as he traveled laterally back and forth, but couldn't get the efforts to pay off. Sure could-a used Higgins to sweet talk him in after that. -

I think one stand, Brent had one he couldn't get on and it walked.

A couple dry stands later but had some vocals at a distance we tried working. Couldn't get any to commit.

11AM the wind picked up and I called a halt to the calling and headed back to camp.

Friday evening I went out with Gerald and Byron. -
I stopped the truck to call a small rise looking into wide wash but decided to move to the next rise. When I pulled back onto the road a coyote ran off in front of use. We made three calling attempts before it got too dark on us. Saw nothing, but managed to hit a cow on the way back to camp. Bummer! If Byron would have been ready, he would have had some good video for his next movie "Comin to the Dodge".

Saturday morning 8AM hunting with Sheri and Brent Rube (pronounce Reeeeebe. The “e” is silent).
We saw 2 coyotes at 500 yards moving hard. Made three calling attempts in a small area but couldn't get any takers.
Picked up stakes and moved to new section.
9:30+/- hit a small triangular section. Called in a pair for Brent but he didn’t see them until they busted out of the creosote on him at 25 yards or so before he saw them. They ran off 100 yards back in the brush and wandered around between bushes. No shots taken.
Next stand called in a single and I missed because I couldn't see it in the scope. I thought Sheri must’a got make-up on the lens of my Leupold. I wiped the lens and couldn't get the coyote in the scope at 45 yards. Wiped the lenses again. Same thing. Then pushed my eyeglasses back up on my nose where they were supposed to be in the first place and whaddya know. Clear as a bell. My glasses were dirty. My apologies Sheri. Anyway I missed a desperation shot.
Next stand, had two coyotes come in from opposite directions. Sheri had stayed in the truck and watched one come in behind as I proceed to gut shoot the other. Brent and I got tired of chasing the one I shot but at least the rancher has one less coyote to deal with. I think there may have been a 6th coyote on a stand but don't recall the details at this time.
Time to meet up with the others.
1PM joined up with Todd Woodall and Jeff Thomason.
First stand had a hard charger that barrel-raced around the FP. Jeff made a running shot and dumped for the money shot on video.
 -
Did some video work and then off to stand #2.
 -
I watched a coyote come in and was sure that the Texicans were watching it because they were pointed in the very direction. Well, they didn’t know it was coming until it busted the brush at XX yards. The race was on and Todd made an awesome shot 75 yards??? Dumping dog #2. 5 seconds of video showing the coyote run off and Todd making the shot.

Next stand was dry. No takers.

Stand # 4 called in a pair. No shot opportunities.

Stand #5 A single popped up at 35 yards to my 3 o’clock. I lip squeaked at it but T&J couldn’t get a visual. No shot taken.

Missed getting one stand in because I took a much needed Atomic Buffalo Turd break while the boyz sat on the tailgate eating summer sausage. Had to loan them my knife too. Don't Texicans carry knives?

Last stand was more of a desperation to get one more stand in before time to go. No takers. Then back to meet up with the others. I’ll let them tell their stories.

Seems to me something like 14 (shootable) coyotes called in during 10 hours or so while we were actually out and about calling.

I’m sure I mixed something up or got it backwards, so the others can chime right in and won’t get any arguments from me.

Here’s my story….and I’m sticking to it.

Friday morning I stayed close to the camp area and walked for about two hours testing some new sounds. I made what seemed like a dozen stands (probably about 6 to 8) with no responses. Rested the rest of the day and enjoyed the R&R.

Saturday, I headed out with Leonard and Tom Moore to hunt over a WT. Coyotes were not in the mood for Porcupine at the first stand. I was shooting video while they mouth called at the second stand and we had a coyote come in. I was not in a position to see it. Tom tried for a head shot at 50 yards and gave him a new part in his hairdo. Gun was sighted in for 200 and the excitement of the moment let him live for another day. Leonard would have to wait for his turn.

The third stand would have been boring if Leonard had not harassed a Rattlesnake that was really just minding it’s own business.

We moved to another pasture and came up dry on three stands. By that time I had put down the video and was testing a new jackrabbit sound. We came across a dog that watched us drive by, so we setup around a nearby stock tank. The coyote wanted nothing of the mouthcalls used at that stand.

That afternoon we called in a coyote that Tom took while it tried to work downwind. The test tape passed muster there. The next stand had a coyote taken by….Tom. The test tape strikes again. Leonard would have to wait for his turn. The next two stands were dry.

The last stand of the afternoon saw a coyote get called by my and Tom’s mouthcalls, ending up behind Tom. I woofed it to a stop and Tom started looking for it. He located it and was directly responsible for Leonard ending the day still waiting for his first opportunity to shoot. Leonard was looking pretty lonely on the right side of me most of the day. The day wasn’t a total bore for Leonard though, we let him bag each of the coyotes for the ride back to the meeting place.
[Wink]

The score: 4 coyotes called...3 killed....by Tom.

Jay, excellent recount of the hunt, except for one slight mistake. Are you kidding me that coyote was 75yds X 2. The only Arizona coyote I get a shot at and he made me work for it. Jeffs was only 50 yards, but I think his was a much harder shot, he had his ears layed back and was heading for the hills. We used Brents Predator Sniper Sicks (that he gave everyone who attended) for the first time and Jeff is sure he wouldnt have been able to swing on that coyote like he did with a bipod. Started using them at just the right time. I will post pics of the action when I get home from work in the morning.

We didnt get to hunt with everyone we one we wanted to, but hey that just leaves you wanting to come back that much more. Rich and Tyler were great to hunt with, but the wind kept the success rate down. We should had stamped Rich with a foxpro label. We used him just like an e-call and got a great video the first stand of the last day. The coyote came from up wind out of a draw and was on a string to Rich, the bad part for him was it put him standing at 40 yards directly in front of us. You got to love it when a plan comes together. Expecially after a hard days hunting the day before. All in all we had a great time and are looking forward to next year.

Take care,

Todd
