Cal, is your video going to be in stores anytime soon? Of not, where can I get it?

I got a pup out of Mervs line and have another cur pup as well, I need to get them out on some dogs soon but don't want them to get wooped and spooked?

Is it best to hunt new dogs with older dogs, or will the older dogs not tolerate them?

Just curious.

C, I don't have any dogs from Mervs. But I think he's had some good enough dogs. I have mostly Dorn dogs and 1 mountain cur that I got in Missouri. I start my dogs in the winter on trapped coyotes mostly. I will run an older dog with a pups sometimes, but sometimes it makes the pup less aggressive because the older dog will claim every coyote as his and not let a pup work or chew on a dead one, so it's kind of a judgement call on how they get along. Like Lonny said you can get a video at APC, and I hope you enjoy it!

I've no doubt it'll be good. I've heard nothing but good stuff about it.

Do you think starting 2 dogs together is a good thing or not so much? One pup is 2 months older than the other, but they do pretty well together. How old are yours before they actually go at a trapped coyote? Just wondering? I shot one and let it lay, then let the 2 dogs go figure it out. They sniffed, hesitant at first, then started to pull and tear at it?

Any other suggestions I can mooch off you?

What part of Wyoming you in? Anywhere near Laramie?

Any recommendations for starting out 2 new pups Cal? Will they have the instinct or not have it like bird dogs?

Bigc,

I hope you are not under the impression that decoy dogs are a fur harvesting tool because they will run most of your coyotes out of the country during fur season.

Decoy dogs are a DENNING TOOL for adult coyotes with their peak territorial aggression during May through July.

If you have a timid dog that works well on some fall pups, an agressive pair of adult coyotes will tear him up.

Yes, you can get some adult coyotes to work decoy dogs in the winter but is that worth having them run the majority of the pups off?

I rolled back the lips on most of the winning teams coyotes at St. Francis and guess what, virtually all of them were pups. You're decoy dogs would have cost you most of those coyotes.

If you are doing ADC work, that's where decoy dogs have their place. You need to start them out with an older dog on trapped coyotes to build their self confidence. From there you gauge their aggression and let them run a few pups off in the winter before you let them tangle with an aggressive adult pair on the den.

I honestly don't know why anyone who is fur harvesting would want to use decoy dogs. I can't tell you how many guys I know that made the mistake of trying to harvest winter coyotes with decoy dogs. They either run most of the coyotes out of the country or they got their little dog killed by a pair of aggressive adults.

Are you fur harvesting or are you doing summertime ADC work?

You will notice that most of the decoy dog footage is shot in the summer months. There's a reason.

Scott,

You obviously don't have a clue as to what you are talking about.

It's pretty clear that you have never hunted with a properly trained Airdork.

The coyotes Always follow them back to the rifle.

Scott,

Thanks for getting back to me.

Mine are fo ADC work. I have hunted over them in the spring over in Wyoming and they were great! I knew they would run coyotes off in the winter, they evern did in the spring. A submissive coyote is a submissive coyote. But I had a large male coyote an bout fun me over chasing one of those dogs we had out there. He ran between me and the guy with the dogs...awesome!!!

I hunt for some ranchers here and in the spring and summer these dogs are going to help with out a doubt.

That info on the trapping and letting them run some off in the winter is great, thanks!

TB: "You obviously don't have a clue as to what you are talking about."

Hahaha! Aren't you a Tomcat?

Unfortunately, when you are in Arizona and heavy cover, you're not aware of just how many coyotes DIDN'T FOLLOW THE DOGS BACK.

Bring your mut up to SD and see what happens. Either he'll get his ass kicked or he'll run the pups out of the country. I'll bet $100 on it right now. Feel lucky?

Don't tell me or the rest of the guys I work with that kill coyotes year round on dogs what we do and don't know about decoy dogs.

TB: "It's pretty clear that you have never hunted with a properly trained Airdork."

It's pretty clear that you have never hunted with a properly trained Airdork in SD or any other state with less cover than you are used to.

TB: "The coyotes Always follow them back to the rifle."

No way! You don't know how many coyotes turned tail because you couldn't see them. Coyotes don't "ALWAYS" do anything and you should know that.

Nice try Fido!

But, Scott, I thought they always stop to look back. They always do. Now I'm confused. [Confused]

Scott you need to brush up on sarcasm. Tim was making a joke. I don’t think he has any use for dogs on a stand. LOL

Good hunting.

Ok, Ok, what's an "airdork"? I thought maybe it was a basketball shoe for dorks.

Missed the sarcasm Tim. Sorry!

Scott, you have been out in the weeds for too long!

It might not be possible to get you up to speed on John Henry and his airdales; known far and wide as, THE NATION.

Your response was a classic "don't have a clue" but it's not your fault! Thanks for the chuckle.

Good hunting. LB

Scott. You first have to understand Tim. His idea of a family vacation is to feed is wonderful wife Joyce to a Sea Lion. Now get ready for this part. She's ready to go back and do it again next year.

They are great folks. Tim has just had a tad to much high voltage run though his brain.

Don't worry Scott, I've never hunted with a properly trained Airdork either. Maybe Vic has?

But I have hunted with quite a few of them who were in training, and I wish I had a dollar for every time their owner yelled at me "Don't shoot the dog!"

I hope you didn't think you were the only trapper on this site who knows how to use a little bait to catch their target animal. [Wink]

And Ronnie, I had Joyce talking about what she was going to do different the "Next time" on the day after I brought her home from the hospital. She is a hell of a good woman, she just sometimes has a little too much curiosity.
