Matt and I made a few stands this morning and we had a uniquely American experience. While walking in to one stand along the Smoky Hill River, I heard the roar of jet engines that just shook the ground for what seemed an eternity. Largely ignoring it, at one point I realized that it wasn't a commercial sounding aircraft, so up we looked. It took me a couple moments but I quickly found a B-2 Stealth Bomber flying high over head, eastbound for Whiting AFB in Missouri. Moments later, from the east, an adult bald eagle flew over us about thirty feet off the ground. The two just seemed to go together.

Arent those cool? I guess Im right on the route to the middle east from Whiteman. Its not an hour from here to Whiteman as a crow flys. Anyhow, Ive noticed that I will see a few of those go over pretty close together and about 36hrs later you will hear of a big attack we made somewhere. ![[Smile]](smile.gif) I guess, from what I hear, they leave Whiteman, fly to the mid east, drop their load and fly back non stop. Refuel in the air. Pretty wild.

They are truly awesome to see. Forty miles west of me is one of the military's main bombing ranges for practice and it isn't uncommon to see Stealths and B-52's flying over head inbound for practice runs. But it's still a thrill every time.
Right next to the range is one of Kansas' largest reservoirs - Kanopolis. This summer, quite by accident, a B-52 was running inbound for a practice drop and something malfunctioned. They ended up dropping nine dummy bombs on the lake and were concerned that they may have broken the seal in the lake bed. How would you have liked to be out on that lake enjoying a leisurely day of fishing when all of a sudden, those "bombs" hit? So much for relaxing.

I saw one taking off from George Airforce Base, right over head as I was driving north on 395. The base had been closed for some time, so I don't know why they did that?
But, I have seen the B1's low level training over in northwestern Utah. That's pretty awesome, too.
Never saw a F117 in the air, although I surely spent a great deal of time circling around Nellis and the AEC, area 51, etc.
Totally off the subject, but the mention of the eagle made me remember that my hawk was back a couple days ago, landing on my cockatiel's cage and scaring the hell out of him.

Ft Leonard Wood, about an hour south of here, has a place called Canon Range. Planes come from all over to bomb and strafe (sp? shoot machine guns). Its pretty awesome. You can stand in the tower and listen to them coming and acquiring targets, shooting, dropping bombs and leaving. They are awesome. F-15, F-16 and A-10 seems to be the ones there the most. And the Apaches. Those damned things are bad to the bone as well.
Like I said, Im glad they are on our side. Shits shot up and blowed to hell before you ever see or hear a thing. It would be scary to be on the receiving end of an attack from any of those guys.

Ft Riley, near me, is expanding like nobody's business (30k new people moving in) and part of that expansion is the addition of an air calvary unit. Fore years, they've based Hueys and, most recently, Blackhaweks there. But in the past three months, they've been flying a lot of AH-64 Apaches in, and those newer style Chinook double rotor choppers.
The Ft is slated to be the country's largest combat infantry training ground and hunting the NE corner of the county these days reminds me of my college days up there. Lots of M-1 tanks over there and they're on maneuvers day and night. I'll be sitting there calling under clear bnlue skies and you'll feel the ground shutter, then a moment of two later, hear the rumble of artillery rounds going off.
