What's your one favorite type of hunting other than predators?

My favorite type of hunting is calling and I hunt most critters that way, including much of my big game hunting. I call more for non-predators than for predators. My favorite? Call it alpine "spot and call".
Since Sept. 1 I’ve hunted caribou, mule deer, whitetail, coastal blacktail, cougar and bobcat, all by calling. Incidentals that came to a call this Fall include a coyote, a black bear and an unknown I glimpsed that was almost certainly a lynx. I had an elk bugle back at me from close by when I was experimenting with a caribou call.
I spotted a grizzly in open alpine at 500 yards in a perfect set up to call but I passed because if he came in, I might have had to shoot him. Grizzly season was open but I didn’t have a tag. I've called them before. Also passed on calling a good bull moose. I hadn’t bought a tag but would have called him for fun if I hadn’t been hustling to intercept a caribou. Moose are fun to call, similar to grey fox IMO.
You can tell I’m getting older, lazier about caring for hides and packing meat, and with my kids grown so that my wife and I don’t need much meat.
Called four whitetail bucks in nine calling stands, plus some maybes, and killed an average 4x4. Called four blacktails in five calling stands, two does and two unknowns. Called three mule deer in three calling tries, killed a modest 4x4 plus eyeguards. Caribou toll in visually better than they come to the sounds I’ve tried. Enticed one young bull inside of 30 yards, another bull and two cows within about 70 yards. [ January 05, 2007, 06:29 PM: Message edited by: Okanagan ]

Whitetail deer.
(Would have said black bear hunting, but technically that's predator hunting).

Yep, Tripp, "anything that walks" is about right. Anything with four legs and fur, and for awhile my favoirte was spear gun hunting for calico bass and occasional white sea bass in kelp beds. I answered more to the type of hunting rather than what specific animal, a little off kilter to the topic title. When I'm eating peach pie, that's my favorite, but then comes huckleberry season.
Rattling whitetails is downright addictive so I'll pick that one. [ January 05, 2007, 10:06 PM: Message edited by: Okanagan ]

Calicos are very difficult with a spear gun. I used to get one occasionally with my four band Arbolette.
Good hunting. LB

Deer, Turkey, Pheasant, Quail (in the good years), gonna try Elk and maybe Antelope.
There's only so many ways to cook a coyote.

Well, you asked for the one thing other than predators. Mine would have to be bear. Second would be pigs. Both of these without dogs.I guess they are considered predators but so am I. ![-](http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q176/DustyHunter/scanSmall.jpg) [ January 06, 2007, 07:43 AM: Message edited by: Dusty Hunter ]

Trapping comes next for me. Any and all spieces.
Then antelope with a bow. There is something about stalking antelope with a recurve or longbow that is hard to beat, IMHO.
Trapped this bear in Maine in sept 2006. ![-](http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid215/pa87cea1987b3f9e0cbdfa18b205e181a/ecf4ec9f.jpg)

Leonard, hunting calico bass in kelp is like hunting whitetails in forest -- when both of you can fly. Diving for halibut put meat in the freezer but for pure fun it was calicos. Haven't done that in years and I'm a long way from the mild waters of So. California.

Trapping would be a close second to calling predators. I also like to rabbit hunt with my beagles. Kinda of a keep the predators hungry theory . I used to hog hunt with dogs. Just sold my last two the other day(dogs). Got tired of all the dog food, and sewing up dogs. Maintain Geordie

Two bad there ain't a couple of pugs or Chihuahuas under that pile.

I'm with Geordie,
I'd just as soon go trapping as anything else. And I sure do miss having Beagles around.
Looks like Doug knows were the fun is at!

Tripp, I've been gone a couple days - just got back and noticed your question. That was my smallest bear, an eleven year old female, taken near the Oregon/California border. If it wasn't for the fog, you could have seen the Pacific Ocean in the background.
