Im moving further out next week. I wont have access to cable tv or the high speed internet that goes with it.
The thought of going back to dialup makes me shudder. What do you guys use? Its not available over phone lines here, DSL anyhow. Satellite? What flavor?
Any help appreciated.

Andy,
I am currently on Wildblue, dial up was not even an option where I live. The Wildblue works good expect when its is raining which is rarely a problem for me. It is pretty fast and Im on the cheapest speed they have.

I don't know if it is possible, Andy? But, while hunting the Navajo last year, things have really changed. Seems like every mud hut hogan, miles from neighbors, had a satellite dish (Direct TV).
If I lived in the boondocks, that's what I would do. Dial up is for the birds.

Andy,
I heard that there can be problems with Hughes but haven't tried it personally.

I was on the satellite in the Baltic sea and the British Isles. It was generally OK but a bit slow even with a big antenna. There were some down times when near mountains.

From what I could find, Qwest isnt available here.
I found both good and bad reviews from Wild Blue and Hughes. I guess those are pretty much my choices. About the same price, but Hughes being faster?
I gotta make a solid decision soon. Thanks for the replys and if anyone else can contribute, please do. Im trying to get everything hooked up next Friday. Were moving on Tuesday.

Andy, All of our field guys use an internet card through our cell phone company. If you get cell phone coverage you get internet access. It is $60/month which is a little pricey, but it is portable to wherever you travel. It may be something to look into with your cell phone provider.

The internet cards are great for laptops, I expect you may use them.. not sure how they would work if you have a normal cpu / monitor set up at home...

That's true, Norm. However, the laptop is proving to be the computer of choice, just as powerful as a desktop, a little more money, but you can take it anywhere.

I tried the card in my laptop 3 years ago........it was SLOW....they got to be faster now....

absolutely correct in regard to the laptop vs desk top... I also know that many homes with teenagers, still have the desk tops as computers of choice.
if the computer is a laptop and you have strong cell phone access... a data card is a very valid option..

I got a Verizon card in July, brought it back the next day. Very slow. Only 2x faster than dial-up. And spendy. They told me it would be twice as fast in downtown Seattle. (Whoop-T-Doo.)
I went Qwest DSL. It's plenty fast, but gets a little skippy sometimes in prime internet time 8-11PM. Good overall, and a decent price, but I wish it didn't stick on occasion.

I have an appointment wiht Hughes for installation next week. Im seriously considering just getting a wireless card for my laptop. I have a router now, with 4 computers runnin off of it. The boys dont use it much. I have a laptop, my wife has a laptop and Im thinkin of buying another anyhow for tax purposes.
May be the best idea. If they are fast enough....
BTW, my laptop is a couple years old and doesnt have a hole for a card. Can they put those in?

I don't know how far out of any town you will be, but keep in mind to check out any wireless (not cell phone) providers. They have some great 5.4 ghz links that can go up to 25-30 miles with line of sight. They are coming down in price fast as the 802.11 market (0-6 miles) is pretty well saturated. I have a link, actually the one I'm on now that runs 23 miles point to point at 11 megabits/sec. A couple years ago, it was pretty spendy for the equipment (6k), but Qwest wanted 100k for a T1 line to our office (18 miles) plus about $500 per month after that (T1 is basically just a dedicated DSL line (1.5 megabits/sec). I only pay the guy I hook into about $40 per month for T1 access for this office. The cool thing is, my house is 3 miles away and I use 802.11 to get the signal off my access point. The only down side is that if the router goes out on top of the feed mill, I get to climb 160 vertical feet to replace it.
If available, a 5.4 ghz link shouldn't be much more than cable price, unless you need a big antenna, but that would only be an up front charge.
Of course this all goes out the window if your in an area with a lot of trees and no line of sight.

If you win the lottery, you could try a link from Orthogon. I ran across them while researching links for my offices. Motorola has bought them recently. Looks like for 20K plus antennas, you could get a link. Of course you'd have to have a good buddy to let you on the net from there.

Before you buy a card, check to make sure it doesn't have an internal card. And if you need a card, let me know. I've two of them brand new in the box sitting on a shelf.

Andy, the internal Wi-fi is different than the internet/data cards that are provided by the cell phone providers.
You would need to check with a computer store as to whether a card slot could be added to your existing computer.
Good luck with getting everything set up...
