Five days before deer hunting in this area, I decided to do some scouting of new territory for bobcat and coyote before the hunters stir things up. Late in the afternoon, I was slowly driving a lonely gravel road looking for sign. Forty yards off the road and under a juniper tree, I saw a cat move. After stopping the truck and backing up to get a better look, I saw it through the binoculars. It turned out to be a mountain lion! Talk about a thrill! I'll be back. Does anyone know of a good book or DVD pertaining to mountain lion hunting?

Fred, do you know how rare an event, that was? I have only seen one, myself, just driving around.

I knew you were a lucky guy!

Good hunting. LB

It's definately rare, and you should be tickled to have seen it. I still haven't seen one by accident. Called one into sight and heard a few others sounding off, both calling and stillhunting, but to see them by accident is really rare. They don't call them "timber ghosts" around here for nothing! They prefer to not be seen.

As to DVD and Book, write or produce one and I'll buy it! I haven't seen one yet with decent information on lions, either media.

Steve, Sounds like a plan to me! I'll let the cat out of the bag (so to speak) around Dec or Jan so he's got some excellent fur. And for those concerned, I don't hunt around Paul's place unless invited. I've been scouting for the last three days looking over new territory and decided to make a stand today. It produced another bobcat! Female, 18 lbs. 30". I was going to sell the hide but my wife says we need two on the wall. Now I have to get 16 more to pay for this hobby - addiction. I took notes and learned from Steve's seminar. Thanks. Fred

Seeing a lion ain't such a big deal. Hell, I hear reports from people - two, maybe three times a week - that saw a mountain lion around here. As a matter of fact, you can't swing a dead cat by the tail without hitting someone that has seen a real cougar in Kansas. And those that have been killed all had transmitters in them. Funny strange, huh?

Seriously, that would be so very cool - to see the real deal. Hell, I was excited to cut and recognize the real deal's track last time I was in CO.

A friend of mine told me he and his family walked this trail for a while when they noticed a mountain lion walking across the canyon paralell to them. He said it was really interesting that the cat was absolutely not aware of their presence.

I told him to visualize this, a cat hidden under a tree and watching them from across the canyon for 20 minutes or so before determining they were not prey or a threat, then walking paralell to them across the canyon, now apparently uninterested. [Eek!]

If the cat hadn't moved as I drove past, I never would have seen him. He was laying on a good sized boulder in the shade under a juniper. When we backed up, he slowly got up, turned and moved to the back of the boulder in a curiosity pose, watched us for a few moments, then slowly raised up and slipped away into the brush.

Glad to see it working for you Fred. You can target cats.

Kelly, Because I was in mountain lion territory, I had my 22-250 shooting a 55gr V-Max. The cat came straight in on me over my decoy. My thought was - oh, shoot, too much gun and explosive bullet. My only hope was to drive that bullet completely into its body with a center punch shot. It's one of my favorite shots, it's kind of like shooting a bullet into a tube of gelatin. One hundred percent of the energy is spent on the critter. Luckily, this center punch did just that. One little hole in the fur in the front and no exit wound. When I get time, I'm going to work up a load with Sierra 22cal #1365s for mountain lion. I have been having good luck with the 55gr V-Max on coyotes.

Congratulations Fred! Do you give lessons? A few years back a mountian lion was messing with hiker's dogs on a mountain near Tucson. I heard it said a couple of greenies were hiking and became alarmed when they encountered the lion on a trail. One hiker quickly removed his boots and was putting on his Reeboks. "You dumb ass", his buddy said, "you cannot outrun a mountain lion". "I don't have to outrun the lion", the friend responded. "I just have to outrun you". ????.

Danny, it is probably impossible for somebody to walk a canyon parallel to a lion, or a bobcat, and he is unaware of the humans. They have a way of putting humans on ignore, but they always know.

Good hunting. LB
